On what basis? Just interested as we are going to Les Arcs later in the season. My recollection of both resorts from previous trips some years ago was that I loved Les Arcs and wasn't so keen on La Plagne.

Thing about La Plagne is that if you ski off piste it has less good skiers so you have less of a rat race to get it and it lasts longer

I just found that it was far easier to get around Le Plagne and ski more runs without having to ski on flat blue piste like in Les Arcs. Les Arcs is ok but has far too many horrible flat runs.

snowymum, don't worry: you will have a great time in Les Arcs (and I say this as a La Plagne fan).
Often the conditions can be quite different from one side of the Vanoise to the other.
One may be better this week, the other better next week.
And the lay-out is very different: La Plagne is essentially a bowl, and Les Arcs is a valley.
I prefer the bowl. Many others prefer the valley.
Where Les Arcs does score for me is the number of Pic-nic places: few and far-between in La Plagne - much more common in Les Arcs

9am in Arc 2000 and started snowing about 30 mins ago.Quite heavy and as well, lots of cloud around so decent snowfall looks in order.

The irony is I would say the opposite. La Plagne is boarders hell, Les Arcs is much easier to get around, very easy to avoid any flat bits. Anyway, this just turns into a p8ssing contest, each to their own, so long as you enjoy yourself thats all that matters.

The forecast is suggesting freeze thaw conditions for the lower slopes next week. Whilst I understand the meaning of freeze-thaw, what does that actually do to the snow on the pistes? Will it be really icy in the mornings and slushy in the afternoons? Will it be skater ice or just hard, crunchy corduroy?

Stopped snowing about 11am in Arcs 2000 and not a flake since. Went out on boards again. Up Bois, down to Arpette, then back up and across to Renard lift. The headed down to Derby. Did the runs under Derby a few times, then back to 1800 and up Vagere, down to Arpette and up it and back into 2000. Lot of boarding today, covered a lot of ground and very well too.
Entered the world of 'real' boarders today and ate our lunch sat on the side of a slope under Derby. Baguette and Genope. Baggy pats hanging half way down our back bottoms next.
Weather lovely, not to cold. More snow forecast tonight it seems.

Really impossible to tell until nearer the time and the weather forecast settles. We are here this week and rain was forecast for the lower slopes and yet it snowed down there. Best advice is not to worry. Bog all you can do about it. Conditions are very good, better than we expected and more snow is due.

maddness, I suspect that if you had of stayed in les arc on wednesday i am sure you would have enjoyed the conditions as much as la plagne .. we went to la plagne today(thursday) and for me it just has a bit missing that les arc has but each to their own.... for me the snow coverage in la plagne did not seem as good as les arc side but as someone has said ealrier it can change from one day to the next on either side of the VE.
and the hotel forecast had 27cm for friday at the begining of the week - its now 4cm, wouldnt surprise me if its 0cm tomorrow breakfast time or even back to 27. so if the hotel cant give useful information a few days in advance then for those out here next week just enjoy whatever snow falls...

Hello everybody!
I just skied my first day at Led Arcs today and loved it. If anyone is ever down to take a couple runs please let me know. I'm here for the winter and would love to find a few ski buddies (especially if you speak English!)
Thanks,
Doug

Heavy snow here in 1800 and visibility is bad. Plan to stay low down and have a play in the powder.

Was pretty good today. Visibility better than expected. Although a little windy which caused col and cable car to close. Skied all the way down to Villaroger.

Nice out today. The 2000 bowl was lovely until they closed all the lifts, then we headed over to Vallandry for the afternoon. Nice and quiet. Very flat light coming back to 1600 late afternoon though, and it was starting to get mushy lower down. Snow on the way tonight, and all day tomorrow by the looks of the forecast.
Any tips on where to head on snowy days?

Mont Blanc run over at 1600 and Peisey side. The old Mont Blanc lift (slowwww) kept the run nearly completely in trees so in bad weather you have to brave the top of the new run but still worth it. Peisey/Vallandry side is the other best option. The 2000 bowl is not normally that easy in heavy snow. Often flat light and poor visibility.

Had a fabulous week of varied conditions, all great fun. Stayed high for most of the time and loved the sunny days that are often few and far between in January.
Yesterday morning before we left, the wind at the top lifts was quite bad, making the steeper runs rather challenging and icy. At the bottom of the Grand Col, we saw a small amount of snow come away and roll onto the Col de la chal and decided it was probably a good idea to head down until it was time to take our boots off and drive home to Belgium.
Always have the best time in Les Arcs. It's my favourite resort. Hoping to squeeze another week in later on, but only if the snow holds out.

thanks for all the updates everyone, leaving in two weeks and cannot wait.
Would appreciate tips from anyone on what runs to do and avoid (flat and icey ones) for two intermediate boarders just looking for some cruising reds and blues!
|
|
|
|
|
|
With blue runs, look at a piste map and apply the following - any run on the map which is depicted by a vertical line, go for it. If it runs from left to right or vice versa, avoid it. Nothing icy here at the moment but some of the blue secteur links (horizontal on the map!) can be quite boring.

Ta - that confirms my suspicions. We haven't spent much time in 1600 yet, despite staying in Courbaton, so that suits. And Peisey is also always a pleasure.
The new Smoking Boar restaurant seems to be going down well - planning on checking that out tomorrow as it's easier to get there than trekking across 1600 to the Arvi Bar.

Very bad visibility today almost everywhere we went, fog seemed to linger this morning. The overnight snow forecast did not materialise, but it did snow lightly this pm, no more than 1-2 cm here in 1600.
Pistes still in good shape though, and still lots of fun to be had, getting ever so slightly colder...
