It looks to me from the WRF mesoscale model that the significant snowfall in the Alps up until Thursday lunchtime will be in... Italy.
Italian milky way and Monterosa.
I do think the Southern French Alps will get quite a decent fall in places, but not on the scale of the Italian snow.
Cooler temperatures in the Alps from the end of the week.

Noza,
Been watching your posts with great interest.
I'm due to go to Chamonix at the end of this month, but my geography is a bit pants.
Can you give me an idea where on your last map Cham is.
Cheers

Roga, bit off-topic but the same old comments come back about Scotland - "too hard to get to" & "runs too damn short" along with "totally unreliable conditions-wise". As a "fan" would you care to put up a defence against this ? (never been up there myself so agnostic obviously)....

JezC, good questions but I don't think we should start a discussion in this thread - would you mind copying the post over to the Scottish Snow 2010/11 thread and then we can do it there and not annoy anyone here

Rico999, Chamonix is right in the corner where France, Italy & Switzerland meet. The Swiss/Italian border is a bit faint on those maps, but you can pick it out if you look closely.

Just worked out that the Lat/Long point for these readings is nearer to Chambery than any other place. Looks like a good chance of snow higher up from these readings though. nozawaonsen, what's your take on the 3 valleys are for the next few days leading into next week?

Off to Tignes a week tomorrow - Tignes website forecasting heavy rain at Le Lac tomorrow. Don't believe this for a sec (or don't want to believe it).

Freezing level does look quite high for the next couple of days.
look at the radar http://www.meteox.com/h.aspx?r=&jaar=-3&soort=loop1uur there's a lot of precipitation heading towards the southern alps but it's also on the back of a strong wind from the south, which is a hell of a lot warmer than a northerly or easterly.

it was strange, sitting on a chairlift which had been temporarily halted because of a very strong gust (not far off gale force, I'd say) feeling slightly too warm for comfort.

phillip33, you would have to pay me a lot - a real big lot - of money to persuade me to be in Orlando in two weeks time rather than the French Alps. Hope you enjoy it, though.

Well that's where I'll be in two weeks' time and I'm sure they'll be just fine. Would FAR rather be in the French Alps than Florida. Call yourself a ??

Chart below gives some indication of the likely distribution of snowfall between now and Friday lunchtime. Though clearly altitude is also going to be a factor.
By the end of the week temperatures look like falling and staying cool into the middle of next week accompanied by higher pressure. Inevitably after that there is a good degree of uncertainty, but it looks rather temperatures rising towards the end of next week before possibly falling once more with more unsettled weather once again. But that is rather too far off to have any real confidence.
