Batman_123, Markymark29, Sideshow Bob, etc - if you have a guided day (or a couple) in the Christmas week, can I join you?
I have all the avy equipment and I can ski just about anything that doesn't involve big mandatory airs. I'll be on the slopes starting with 22 Dec - mostly with my family but I can do an offpiste day or two. The alternative would be to join a P2P group but it would be good to ski with some snowheads.

horizon, we're with P2P 26th, 27th, 28th in a 3/4 group, but will be around between 24th and 29th inclusive. Don't know the area at all I'm afraid, first time I'll be there. More than welcome to ski with us.

Sideshow_Bob, any chance of PM-ing me your real name? I've asked P2P if they have places available but snowheads names may not be very useful in identifying the group you're going with
As for the non-guided days, most of them I'll be on piste with my family (although I may venture on mild offpiste with my son). But I'm sure we'll find a few times to ski together.
Regards,
Cedric

Markymark29, Valuga I and II have both been closed since at least Thursday when we arrived. Very windy up there, not sure what it will be like when it opens. Snowed a mini-dump yesterday morning, but very slushy in town (+1 degree). Conditions higher up were excellent, knee deep fresh tracks on Mattun and Shoengraben. Back home now, sadly.

horizon, Did you get sorted? With a guide 26th and 28th, think on 28th we are sorted as a group of 3, and our OH's may decide (depending on weather) to join us on 26th. How flexible are you, if you want to PM me your mobile I could text you when we're out there once we know our plans?

Sitter, Oh no, thats a bad one then, major slide zone, you've got to be real careful down there.
Boosterfaceman, sounds and looks brilliant, youve had a great week if you are there now.
kitenski, Will try my hardest, meeting Clarky999 and horizon on 28th for a Torben guided day out on the WD Redeemers (Mantras if he's got ideas of bootpacking it)...........think there should be some decent pow about without looking too hard though so we can get the big-lads on and play out! Hope your Val trip went well......Frohe Weinachten

Sitter, yes 48 year old Russian killed after being buried under 1.7m of snow in avalanche in Schoengraben. Colleagues did not originally notice him missing due to poor visibility and only sounded alarm when he did not join them in valley.
Also an avalanche in Lech, Steinmähder with a woman rescued from being buried under a similar depth but being reached much more quickly. Report I read said she was being treated in hospital.

Bit more on the Lech avalanche. The woman was a 36 year old Italian. Although she suffered a shock she was otherwise unhurt. She was part of a six person group and was found and recovered by the group and their guide. A Scottish skier was also caught in the avalanche, but was able to trigger their airbag and remained on the surface. From swabische.de.

Very sad. Schoengraben is not a safe place, especially with a lot of wind transportation going on. I only skied the top section (down to the t-bar base), but even there, there are safer and less-safe options, and plenty of people were dropping in to steep wind slab areas.
Take it easy out there folks!

sah, Agreed, v sad............went down there last season and I spent more time looking backwards thatn forwards, like skiing down into a funnel, why anyone would be down there currently who knows? ...........What's the run like from the right at top of the drag where you traverse along and drop into the gully at top of Schoengraben, then skirt round to the bottom of the drag, this is usually pretty safe.............is that a no-no too?
I assume Mattun is a no go currently?
What about Maienwasen, Larches, Kandahar gullys etc?

Mattun is open from Kappal. Schindler may open this afternoon if not tomorrow morning.

I avoided the access from the very top as that had windslab, but many others had skied it. I accessed from part way down the T-bar, that area looked safe to me. It's a pretty short run around the knoll back to the lift just above the huts but it was fresh tracks all the same

No, that's open from Kappal as stanton says. It was good on Monday. However, just because the ski route is open does not mean the entire gully is safe - we skied a line quite a way from the ski route and I was pretty annoyed to be followed by a group with no equipment.

Yeah, again as stanton said, skied out when I was there and to be honest they get skied out with an hour of Galzig opening whatever the weather. The cover didn't look that good under Zamermoos, but that's changing fast. Larchen and Backseit seemed to have very good cover though.
Also found good runs around Arlenmaehder, and the run down Albona North Face was very nice (although we skied back to the piste below the midstation as it got pretty heavy lower down last weekend).
Lots of rocks going down to Rauz though (the route where you keep right of the piste coming down from Ulmerhutte)... now I need new skis having cracked the side wall on my brand new Atomics:(

Here's a report (in German) on the fatal avalanche in St Anton on Tuesday.
http://lawinenwarndienst.blogspot.co.at/2012/12/details-zum-todlichen-lawinenunfall-im_20.html
A group of Russian skiers lost their way in deep snow and poor visibility coming down one of the chutes to the side of Torli. The first photo shows the Torli route just to the right with the route the Russians took just to the left. The second photo shows the couloir from above where it joins the main Torli route.
One of the party was caught in an avalanche, unfortunately in the poor conditions his colleagues did not notice him missing until they got to the valley. He had managed to trigger his ABS, but in the chute this wasn't able to save him.
In terms of the ease of getting lost and disorientated up there, a few years ago I found myself in a similar position (coming down one of the chutes to the left), when our guide (from a well known off piste outfit) got disorientated.
