Markymark29, Which barmaid? The midget or the one that's hot ie looks links the singer from the bangles? I've always preferred the griabli to the moos anyway. Beer much better and great when band playing. You've still gotta do the moos though at least once during the week

So according to those maps on the previous page, would I be right in assuming that in St Anton they are expecting possibly upwards of 100cm of snow very soon?

sah, the videos of people skiing/boarding with them either having the camera on a pole directed at them and the slope behind them rather than below them.. if that made anymore sense?

Ah, see what you mean. Yeah, they make me feel a bit dizzy actually, kind of like motion sickness.

Well... in so far as a forecast a week away is as useful as a chocolate teapot, 12z is forecasting the end of the world (on account of being weighed down by snow) on 21st. http://www.ski-finder.co.uk/grab_gfs.php?lat=47&lon=10
I'm beginning to worry that there will be too *much* snow. It won't be any good if the cable cars are below the snow level... perhaps we should start doing sun dances.

I dont know about Schladming that is way east of the Arlberg in Styria Provence. Its not the Tyrol
Snow-Forecast is not reliable or accurate on Local snow.

Pretty much all of Austria (and all of the Alps) is getting snow this weekend, but I'm afraid Styria isn't getting as much as the Tyrol (according to Bergfex).

stanton, Shaping up to be a great season with a good base, last weekend was good, if it carries on way its going my end January trip will be brill. By the way, wonder if you can offer any thought on this? - I saw at the weekend when looking across the valley from Gampen they have put loads of new av barriers up in Shimelegg area over the summer, does this mean skiing Shimmy off back on Riffel 2 is no longer possible, or is it still OK?

Markymark29,
A few seasons ago (2009/10) a couple of people died in seperate avalanches within the space of a couple of weeks in the very same area. I have not been up there yet but that area always has risks

All that nice snow, why did he ski down the tracks of the guy in front? I'm all for saving the snow for others, but there's no point in skiing in the exact same tracks, it just makes a mess.

There always were barriers to the skier's left at the top, have they extended these?
Did you mean Riffel 2, I thought Shimmelegg (eck?) starts from the top of Gampberg? Map here.

He didnt, that was almost perfect powder preservation.
He started off tight to the left of the guides line, then because of the large rock & the flat schuss he had to switch to the right side of the guides line then in the couloir he filled in a conntinuous line of 8's.

norris, it was a rather epic day. This is from Jan 2008 and I think that was the last time I skied proper powder, certainly the last time in St Anton... hopefully I'll rectify that soon.

stanton, good vid, and a good example what different angles, cuts and a few effects can have on what can be boring footage. Anyone with a camera that's the sort of end product you should be trying to achieve with your footage, doesn't have to be in powder with jumps and trees (though it certainly helps). The background music really fits as well, bright upbeat but not cheesy. (unlike the majority of food in La Tania).

Very public spirited of him... So, not like this then
(Vorderrendl, before anyone asks). |
You should be shot for that. To greedy using so much space, powder is always in short supply
Google "Powder etiquette" |
That's not me skiing, I took the photo. That was the local guide. His view is that it's a big mountain, we got there first, it's up to us how we ski, and he likes to ski fast with big turns. I think I was first one down that time, so I can't blamed for not being tidy My tracks are somewhere in the middle.
You should see what we did on Star Wars later that day... I didn't take any pictures there, I was too busy scaring myself by trying to keep up with the guide.
If it's any consolation you can make about a dozen "wedel" (?) turns between his big ones, so in a way it preserves more powder.

sah, Your right, Shimmelegg is accessed via Gampberg. I was there in summer and they were heli-ing new av barriers into position. And when I looked last week they look very extensive. I just wonder from those who may have done the run if it's still feasible?
stanton, Take your point re the dangers, it's a great route am always taking as much care as poss.

stanton, Take your point re the dangers, it's a great route am always taking as much care as poss, I walked it in the summer with the Director of the Arlberg Ski School. A good friend with our family's and got the full story, really chilling when up there and as told by one of those who was involved in the rescue. That's why the trees are all gone in that area, the new mounds were built in the high level valley - the av came down, 100 year event and breached the Rosanna river.

Perfect day here in Lech. The sun had made an appearance and good snow. The link to Warth will be built this year. There is a new gondola station at Weibermahd. Chairs toi the left, gondolas to the right. The Steinmahder isa closed and so is the Madloch.
