I'm booked with Mark Warner, in Tignes and are due to fly from Gatwick at 6.30 tomorrow. We are booked in a local Hotel tonight, but we are sat here contemplating the 200 mile drive to Gatwick, just to be sat around.
All they are saying is turn up 3 hours before the time they annouce that they will open the air space.

Belgian airspace has said they will not be open until at least 8am tomorrow morning... so 7am your time, doesn't look likely.
I've been watching (intermittently) the webcam of the naughty volcano in action, it's certainly spewing out more than it was at 7am this morning... I'd be booking ferry tickets.

Eurotunnel booked - in the 20mins we decided on ferry times the three ones we wanted filled up! Sea France only one to Calais available online - P&O still down and not answering calls!
Well at least we'll get a bit of extra boarding as we should be there by lunchtime on Monday! Will go and stockpile Redbull in Tesco now

Dwarf Vader, YSE ski have arranged coach travel tomorrow for their clients going to Val D'Isere - you could try calling them to see if they'll sell you a spare seat (if there are any). Worth a shot? I'm sure they'll drop you at a reasonable stopping place. Call 07707 034994 |
I gave them a call and they are pretty much full and will only give a seat up if I book the holiday with them. Thanks Anyway

lizski, looks like the situation is going to continue for several days yet. If you're desparate then I'd look at getting a ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao, or possibly Plymouth to Santander and then get a plane from Spain. This remains clear of the smog - so far.

Well, my pregnant wife is stuck in Australia and if her flight doesn't depart on Monday afternoon, the next earliest seat QANTAS can guarantee is 28 April. Problem is that if she doesn't make that flight the last possible day she can fly is 01 May (will be 36 weeks by then). If she isn't airborne by then I need to work out some way to get to Australia by 25 May to be in time for the birth. Will then need to arrange Australian passport and visa for new bubs to get back to the UK (all in time to then move back to Oz in Jan 2011)
Possible option is for them to fly Melb--Hong Kong--Rome and then I'll drive to Rome and collect them from there....

Rode past East Mids Airport today and it felt very strange. Car parks empty, all the DHL planes lined up on the apron. Not a soul around anywhere.

queen bodecia, flashing gantry signs all down the m60 'manc airport closed' nearly woke me up from my singing with all the flashing, I tend to think those signs are going to tell me something important about the road in front of me *shrugs*
ozzie skier, crikey! best wishes n'all that.
Selfishly, I'm concerned for next week and I'm sorry for those whose plans are all over the place but mostly, I'm bored with it all, when's it going to rain?

Evening peeps. Carled reporting in. Thankfully from a very plush apartment in the montsoleil terrasses d'eos. Set off from Leicester at 6:25pm yesterday, arrived eurotunnel at 21:45 for 22:30 crossing, set off from Calais at midnight and made it to F1 Troyes for about 3:30am. Set off from there at 11:30am and after a couple of pitstops arrived in Flaine for 4:30pm. Ski hire sorted for girls, had a swim, beer chilling and screw you, volcano, you didn't stop me!
Laters.

I wonder if the authorities are going to have to permit transatlantic and other non-European origin flights to fly into Shannon - and then continue to England below 20,000'. Harks back to the piston-engined aircraft days. Seems a better answer than leaving people stranded.

achilles, the advisory for the ash is from surface to 35000' and now includes the atlantic well west of Ireland. Unless the current weather pattern breaks sometime soon and we get more South westerly winds then this will carry on for sometime.... Starting to resign myself to not making it back to Oz for birth of daughter #2....

ozzie skier, commiserations. A member of our family flew into Glasgow this morning; we appreciate how lucky we are - and hope that more 'windows' open up soon for others to come home. It will be interesting to see the results of the KLM test flight

Thanks for all the comments, it makes sitting here in Pompey a bit better.
Problem is finding a flight somewhere into Europe from Australia, along with being a flight with a QF flight number. Therefore Melbourne--HK--Rome is probably best option. The other problem is Singapore, Bangkok, etc. are basicly completly full and are refusing to accept anyone who is flying on to Europe. Don't know about Hong Kong. Cathay was still flying into Rome today, so that might be an option.

Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Saturday April 17, 2045
The volcanic ash cloud from Iceland is moving around and changing shape. Based on the latest information from the Met Office, NATS advises that the restrictions currently in place across UK controlled airspace will remain in place until at least 1300 (UK time) tomorrow, Sunday 18 April. |
So Monday is now the new maybe

Lots of people stuck in Morzine at the moment, apparently Geneva closed until around lunchtime tomorrow.
We're driving, so no issue, but one of the guys is going to come with and try and get on at Calais - have just spoken to a mate who works there and apparently 3 hours queues to get a foot passenger ticket and trouble with the number of coaches trying to get back from France.
It never rains but it pours, at least the skiing was brilliant!

Oh well, ever the optimist, I have started packing and will leave for Luton this afternoon / evening, obviously keeping an eye on the cancellations, if my flight for tomorrow am is cancelled and I can't get on a Tuesday flight, I will give up, but as I went through the agony of a cortisone injection in my foot so I could ski, the least I can do, is attempt to get there !!!. My friend won't go at all, she claims the airspace won't be open for at least a week, but as this would have been her 5th holiday this year, I don't suppose she is that bothered.
ozzie skier, it puts all of our woes into perspective, I hope you manage to sort something out very soon.
