williams691, No - you have to email me from the pic where it says "email me"! No good me having online booking being only a 1-woman show. I'll email you. It seems to be a current tendency to be quite warm in the middle of the day, but is being cold at night, so the cannons can run - this is fine. It's not warm enough for long enough to damage the quality of the snow which is excellent BTW. You should be 100% fine. forecasts don't look as though there's much on the horizon until Xmas weekend, but I don't think that will matter. This time last year, in spite of all the early snow, there were stones and rocks everywhere. As I said I took the "punter's" routes today and only touched one.

Just for indicative purposes, here at 640m we didn't lose the frost all day so I see no sign of this promised "heat wave". Thank goodness!

It's been pretty cold all day in the lower reaches of the Chartreuse too, even when the sun burnt of inevitable fog. Looking at all these lovely pics is making think of skiving of work for a day next week and coming up (back in London for the weekend - d'oh!).

Looking at Austria, there seems to be a temperature inversion at the moment with temperatures lower at valley level than on the peaks. Maybe the same situation where you guys are.
Lovely pics again easiski

rayscoops, If you want to meet up I'll be in the main square under the revolving ball at 09.30 tomorrow morning to take williams691, and his mob up. then I'll be skiing with Little Tiger meeting at the Cretes at around 12.00. Otherwise give me a bell and we'll organise a drink later. Annie and Late Starter and their families arrive tomorrow.
Not much to add to what rayscoops, wrote. It's supposed to be light snow tomorrow, so fingers crossed that it'll snow more than they think. Looked as if it was dumping on La Muzelle though.

Also VERY GOOD is that all the Varsity mob are now on their way home. We had a fair few in this building - why are students so filthy?
|
That would be because they are all out skiing on Mummy and Daddy's allowance. God help them when they have to fend for themselves

Charlatanefc, the trouble is they've never had to spend their own hard earned, have they? perhaps they always have a maid to pick up their rubbish? I resent having to do it, but what's the alternative? Have the building smelling like a dustbin? Perhaps I should send a bill to the powers that be at Oxbridge???
Unfortunately it's dawning clear so far this morning. Keep fingers crossed - it can still change.

Only an impression but when everyone at home talks about no snow in the alpes and a few horror pictures in the papers to back that up, I think of the pics of L2A and its looks decent for this time of the year, to me.
Maybe L2A will be the place with the best snow this season.... to early to call...but........

Varsity trippers Mummy here, not all on allowances, my one earned a lot of the money himself. With a consideration from us as we can't think of any of us missing a years skiing.
Last year the whole trip lost some of their damage deposit to cover others mess, I hope the money goes to the owners for the mess and is not hived off by the travel company.

again conditions not too bad. actually quite good and good for me as a bit of a novice boarder. signs of some fresh snow up top early this morning. the lower learning slopes at the first lift stage are fine too. glad I am here. Clouds setting in now so maybe a bit of snow later, Easiski thanks for invite but not been organised enough to check the forum, will try to contact you later

Aye, most places we've been have been fine, but experienced a lot of this in Chamonix last year. No co-incidence that it was the in place for young Brits last year, that the place turned into a craphole

janette, the ones in my building didn't really damage anything - they just didn't seem to think anything of leaving empty cans, bottles, bits of paper and litter and rubbish bags later all around the place. I know they got a dead cheap deal, but it's not my job to clean up after them - I'm ony a co-owner in the building! Unfortunately I'm the only co-owner who actually lives here.
got kind of miz today, but diappointingly no snow. We're now in a major fog so Im keeping my fingers crossed that it's hiding something. However it was annoying to keep seeing patches of blue sky this pm!
Nice view of La Muzelle on the left and the Aiguille de Venosc on the right

I returned home on Friday from Les 2 Alpes, and can surmise the following:
Snow cover thinner than this time last year, but loads better. A well-packed and consolidated base across the mountain - could have skied all week without damaging the bases if I'd been sensible, but I decided to ski home every day down the (closed) face from the Cretes at 2100 to 1650, and caught one or two rocks. Also, a little foolish off-piste excursion between the Mura and the Jandri presented me with horrible graunching noises and an enforced impression of a mexican having his feet shot at in a western, but surprisingly, no damage to the skis.
Last year I nearly pulled an edge off while pratting about in baseless powder on the Breche, so was relieved to escape similar travails this time round.
All in all, a smashing few days with stunning clear skies and little wind (except after an artichoke pizza in the Moulin, and even that was a gentle warm Foehn, blowing lazily up from the south), good company and a lot of laughs.
Oh yes, the Varsity. Now you'd think that being some of the brightest stars in the educational firmament, they'd be able to:
1) Speak properly - While waiting for the bus to Grenoble I heard one vacuous cretin say the work "like" a whole 27 times in ten minutes. And why do they feel the need to end all sentences with the inflection of a question?
2) Speak at all - We greeted one callow youth as he skulked out of the apartment lifts, and he couldn't actually muster a single word - not even "like".
3) Speak intelligent stuff - Unlike the not-unattractive bit of fluff I shared the Bellecombes lift with, who announced that "there wasn't enough snow to avalanche", despite evidence to the contrary all around us. She continued, "I've skied all over Austria and Switzerland, and L2A is weak and unchallenging by comparison, and I haven't fallen over in seven years". Being an incorrigible toad, I offered to take her down the Grand Couloir (who could refuse such an offer?), whereupon she fell twice in the top section, slid down the middle bit on her delightful derrier, and took 20mins to negotiate the rest, before reaching the bottom shaking like Stevens.
In their defence, there were loads of well-behaved, well-mannered students there (probably outnumbering the trustafarians in fact), but thats not nearly as funny.
Those of you going out there - don't worry, it's fab!
Cheers for the updates Charlotte

The most annoying phrase has to be "You Know". Try counting the number of times any tennis player says this in an interview during Wimbledon Fortnight. Federer seems to squeeze the phrase twice into every sentence. |
I should imagine that English could be his third or fourth language, and he here's it most from other tennis players. It's hardly surprising that he's picked up a few of their bad habits. That said, it must be difficult thinking of things to say to the same vacuous questions tournament after tournament ("Well Roger, how do feel after winning?").
