Les Gets official website now says opening Dec 23 instead of Dec 16 as previously stated.
There seems to be the potential for a days snowfall towards end of this week and then empty blue skies going into next week.

Just phoned the tourist office and it's true - no opening this weekend due to the rain - back bottom!

A pity, given the fantastic cover they had upon until yesterday. The webcams https://www.lesgets.com/en/webcams/ shows rain at Front de neige and sleet on Chavannes right now.

So what does that mean for those of us arriving on Friday? No lifts? |
Sorry to hear this about your trip. Hopefully you can claim some impact from 100% lift closure on travel insurance or they make transport arrangements to get holiday makers to Avoriaz.

Avoriaz TO have confirmed that they will be opening this weekend.
That will make a change - after 4 trips to Les Gets where we've never left the LG area we get something new

You'll also get access to Chatel Pre La Joux and Linga areas, especially if you start your day from Montriond / Linderets area. It should be quiet and good snow.

How "busy" is this time of year for the area (Avoriaz in particular)?
Assuming that most other surrounding resorts/villages will be badly effected by the recent rain and some delaying their opening, will it be "mobbed" this weekend?

It should be fairly quiet and will ramp up on 23rd for Christmas holidays. Might be busy on weekends as locals come up.

Not in the least bit surprised by the delayed opening dates. It's perhaps difficult for those not actually here to grasp the sheer volume of water that's fallen in the last four days. It's rained pretty much non-stop, heavily most of the time, Only today turned to snow at village level (1460m) here but still rain just over the pass towards Chatel, and only around zero C at the moment.
The area round the new Morgins cablecar is a swamp, nearly a lake TBH; the main road down to the valley is still closed (for the third day) due to landslips. It's been pretty apocalyptic.

@Roscoe, this weekend will be busy in Avoriaz as it’s ski test weekend. I think we’ll head over to Chatel/PlJ area Sat and Sun.

Oof, looks pretty grim for the skiing in Les Gets and Morzine at least (the two places I've kept an eye on the webcams).
I was holding off on booking accommodation as fancied returning to Les Gets for Xmas (starting 23rd!). Haven't been there for a few years and it's a great vibe at that time of year.
But the family all want decent snow of course. So, it's a tough one. Doesn't look like enough new snow is going to fall over the next couple of days. Fear we may be headed elsewhere. Where exactly, given the general devastation at lower altitudes, is another matter!
Advice gladly taken

@Boohoo, Chatel has snow of you wanted to remain in the region. The Pre La Joux area is a safe bet and easy to reach from the village by shuttle bus.

Is Val Thorens in your price range?
Looks pretty much immune from the mud, slush and winter heat.

This thread should start every year with advice to just go to Val Desire, Val Thorens, Verbier or Valhalla. Meanwhile I’m sticking skins on my board to help grip to the mud. There’s a nice layer of white mud in town so should be loaded higher up.

@BobinCH, I've had enough snow, am just heading up the hill now for research.
And I didn't even get PdS / Verbier pass this year because I knew we were in for a great season at sea level......or maybe I missed the sale cut-off date, can't remember. Anyway I never get full value out of those high resorts.....typically 4-5 days in Avoriaz, 1-2 in Valhalbier and the rest battling mud in the trenches where I am like a pig. Rolling around in the stuff.

Ok maybe not much rolling today as the whole place has been carpeted.
At least a foot at a 1600m

Thanks for the tip. I don't know how pricy Val Thorens is, but suspect it might be out of our range if it's a question that needs to be asked. We're cheap (as poss) and cheerful (occasionally) skiers. We've also got a family member who doesn't do well sleeping at altitude, so the lower the better for them, i think they were fine at around 1400m a couple of years back though.
We've booked flights to Geneva on 23rd, so the closer the better.
Having said that, it's snowing like mad in Les Gets at the moment - question is how much, I guess. Enough for pistes like Yeti and a tiny bit of off-piste or just enough to do the properly groomed runs. Where did I put that Magic 8 Ball...

@Ozboy Thanks. I've never been over to Chatel, although a friend of a friend has a place there. Looks like 1h 50m on the transfer from Geneva.
What's Chatel like in itself? Don't need masses of apres ski but a half decent local supermarket and a couple of bars & pizza places would be nice.

It has everything you mentioned above - “chocolate box” village but I think more French and village feel than Morzine (I don’t know LG). There are 3 main connected areas for skiing and much quicker to access the heart of PDS and Swiss side than from LG. The PDS piste map does not truly represent the scale of the area as it is squashed in a corner of the map. Transfer is around 1:30 if you have your own car from GVA airport by taking the Swiss route north of the lake. Best tip is to make sure you book restaurants ahead of time which I can recommend if you send me a DM.

Given the current conditions I'd probably skip Les Gets and look at staying in either Morzine, Avoriaz, or Chatel.
I've only ever 'passed through' Chatel when doing a circuit so would bow to Ozboy's comments, but Morzine gives you a similar village feel to Les Gets, just with direct buses to Prodains/Ardent or the Super-Morzine gondola if all the skiing is higher up (need to get the public bus from Les Gets to Morzine, then change if staying in Les Gets and same conditions) while Avoriaz puts you up the mountain with a not bad atmosphere (for a purpose built, mountain top resort). Morzine's where I'll be from the 20th.

We tried Châtel (from Ardents) last weekend, just to avoid the mad crowds staying in Avo.
What an amazing area, at least the opened part that sunny day (basically PLJ).
Obviously we'll revert to LG once it officially opens. I already skinned there a month ago on Nov 11th, but since then snow was wiped out, came back, melt, and is now back... crossing fingers!

We are staying nicely slope side in Les Gets, would have been perfect if they opened the lifts:(
Now we are looking at driving to Avoriaz which is new to me. Any tips, where to park anything to watch out for?4 adults and an 11 year old.
Thinking to hire skis in Avoriaz with a shop where they could be left overnight to save carting them back and forth every day. That said we will have 2 cars so could.

@dazzle109, Probably best to drive or bus to Montriond and take the Ardent bubble which will take you to the Linderets plateau at which point you head right for Avoriaz, left for Chatel or straight ahead for Linderets bowl and Swiss side. Someone will have to confirm if there is a ski rental shop in Ardent hamlet where you could also leave your skis overnight. The key issue will be traffic and parking as it will be peak holiday period - best to leave early.

There's a ski rental shop, not sure about leaving gear overnight. Traffic.as better than Prodains (Swiss plates not having winter gear...) but nothing too annoying

You can definitely leave your skis / boots at Sport 2000 overnight. I suggest you give them a call to confirm this. Location is very convenient as it's juts a few steps from the edge of the blue run (at the small roundabout where the navette turns).

100% agree re parking ... try and get there for 8:30 if not earlier. You can then grab a good spot near the bubble.
