@chubuking, @skimastaaah, I'm already seeing big discounts coming up in Lech, even for Christmas (should be even more for January).
I think a backlash is coming soon.
Where are you seeing these discounts I’ve been searching everywhere

Anyone got the inside scoop on when Rendl, Valluga and the Nasserein Rodelbahn will open? We're travelling on 16th Dec with a mixed group of keen powderheads (me), but also beginners and children.
Rendl normally opens on Friday before High Season starts so ronud 15th could be earlier .. At the moment there will be more employees on Rendl than Skiers if they opened
Valluga.. (I never use it) Who knows .. Last season it was rarely open in fact I think only opened for the Weisse Rausch at the end of the Season .
German Railway Strikes (latest) .. This can/will effect ALL travel in/out of Austria & Switzerland
Update from 4 December, 2.30 p.m.: After many train journeys were severely affected by the snow chaos at the weekend, passengers are already threatened with the next adversity: The train drivers' union GDL has announced a warning strike in the wage dispute with Deutsche Bahn, but it is still completely unclear when this will take place. In an interview with Radio Eins, GDL boss Claus Weselsky said after several questions about the upcoming warning strike: "This will take place promptly, but we will inform about it in good time via the media and announce the next strike."
He did not want to commit to an exact time. He also dodged the question of the extent to which the snow chaos played a role in delaying the announcement of the next strike. At least Weselsky continued to rule out a strike at Christmas.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Why pay €30 for a Schnitzel or €8 Beer in St Anton when you can get it a €15 Schintzel or a €3.50 beer in the smaller less well known ski area..
Problem is that St Anton accommodation prices for anything half decent is over £1500 per week. Compare that with similar standard hotels in Dolomites or Aosta resorts at £1000 and the Arlberg is significantly overpriced. I've got BA flights to Innsbruck the end of January that I am seriously thinking of changing to Milan or Turin that would "save" potentially £600-£800 on the overall holiday costs and still give me a great ski holiday.
If you have flights to Innsbruck, then it is a skoosh to get to Val Gardena, even on public transport. Train from Innsbruck to Ponte Gardena via the Brenner Pass and then the council bus up the hill. Kronplatz is easy too I believe but I've never stayed there.
New Schlosskopfbahn I+II in Lech/Oberlech will be a 10 persons-Gondola!

Me too, and I got a hire car at Innsbruck!
It's still in the balance ... Pay over the odds for another Arlberg ski tour, or change the flights and still get a great ski holiday for £500 less.

Hi all, I’ve narrowed my December low season trip between serfaus fiss ladis and Lech. I have a DIY quote for serfaus for £850pp and £1200pp for Lech. Is lech worth the extra £300?

Low season is until end of next week?
Dont think there is anything epic enough worth the extra atm. £300 is half another another trip end of season
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

@chubuking, which hotel in Lech is that?
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

For the ski pass the “low season” ends 22.12.23.

There’s a couple in lech via booking.com that are reducing their prices. How much longer can I hold out until they cave in and reduce further?
I’ve tried messaging and no one is budging further yet

I’ve been carefully watching prices and they are beginning to fall in st Anton, still plenty of availability too. Not sure how long I should hold out

@chubuking, from what you have said elsewhere you have not skied that much before. If so the Arlberg might not be ideal for you. Lech does have a reasonable amount of straight forward piste skiing, it is a lovely place but not sure it is worth paying the inevitable additional costs to stay there. Whilst St Anton does have some decent bunny slopes for near beginners it lacks many straight forward pistes for those who are no longer beginners but might not be described as "competent" and want to improve. Given current snow conditions you will probably have a better ski holiday in one of the other areas such as Kitzbühel, Zillertal, Saalbach Hinterglemm etc.

@chubuking, But then, Lech is very special, especially in the weeks before Christmas. And you now have the chance to visit in excellent conditions, and best prices.
As @munich_irish says, St.Anton is probably not for you.
@chubuking, Zürs also has quite a few cruisey pistes… as long as the visibility is good. While the lift lines on Seekopfbahn and Zürserseebahn can get daunting mid-morning, the pistes on that side of the road rarely do.
On the other side of road, Balmen, off Trittkopfbahn, first thing in the morning is a pleasure. Later, it becomes the skiing equivalent of an LA freeway in peak hour. Hexaboden rarely has a queue.
Agree with @munich_irish that if you are not a very strong intermediate or better, and comfortable skiing in close quarters with crowds, or an absolute rank beginner, you will find St Anton difficult.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

There are no lift-lines and chopped-up pistes before Christmas...
This latest strike was only called Wednesday . Started lastnight at 22:00hrs for passenger trains and last 24hrs until 22:00hrs tonight.
Be aware anyone travelling by train from Munich or Freidrickhafen and International services into Austria over the Holiday period that these strikes are called with very short notice period..
Because of the uncertainty people (1000's) who normally travel by train to Austria will switch to cars . The volume of traffic especially over the Xmas/NewYear Holidays & weekends will greatly increase..

Dearest @stanton, this last summer, the groundworks for the new Schlosskopfbahn midstation, including a skipath to the piste, have been completed. It’s at ‘Spitzenegg’, you probably need to look that up…

I’ve been looking at the ski welt and Westendorf in particular which has opened today and I’m shocked how cheap the accommodation is €400 for the week near the lift so it’s a toss up between somewhere like that and lech

Arlberg/Lech and Westerndorf very very different resorts, no comparison, pricewise, ski area and accommodation. If Skiwelt, then look at Soll.

@chubuking, Yes Westendorf "opened" today but not much is actually open (the link to Kitzbühel does not open until Christmas Eve). I plan on going to Scheffau on Sunday (plan for weekend trip to St Anton defeated by a train strike!) not all is open but enough for a day out. People have made a number of sensible suggestions to you but you seem to want to find something cheaper, in life you usually get what you pay for. Personally I think you would be best off in Saalbach Hinterglemm or Ski Amade. If you really want to go to the Arlberg, push the boat out & stay in Lech.

Lech is a galaxy apart from Westendorf. The dilemma stems from not getting this fundamental point. In fact all the Arlberg resorts are really special, but a skier will need half a life time of skiing to get to understand. Over the past 20 years I may have skied in the Arlberg 25/30 times, and reckon I could that again over the next 20 years. It is infectious!
Having seen the accommodation prices sky-rocket over the past 2/3 years, and having skied many other ski destinations, for me the dilemma is that I know I can have a great ski holiday (or 2/3) elsewhere in the Alps despite the lure of the Arlberg.

I got the Arlberg/Vorarlberg ‘thing’ the first time, it’s special in every facet. Add the incredible snow and colder temperatures record.
There was always a price premium. Regarding inflation, isn’t that Alps wide in resorts with decent altitude? Our favoured hotel in Ski Amade post pandemic have increased week’s tariffs by 20% per annum!

Until the middle of next week, very changeable weather.
After that, there will be a lasting improvement in the weather with a high-pressure area.
But for the time being, a very strong cold front will cross us in the night to Sunday.
The temperatures drop again, the snow line drops again around 1000m.
A warm front encroaches on us in the sunday night to Monday and finally pushes the wintry cold air masses eastwards.
On Monday and Tuesday very mild and humid Atlantic air masses will determine our weather patterns.
With mostly heavy clouds, there is often prolonged and heavy precipitation. Rain downtown
The snow line is close to 2000m. Only on Wednesday the temperatures will slowly start to drop again and by Thursday the snow line will be below 1000m again.

@chubuking, they are not. Just promising.
But in general weather is not much different across West-Austria. If it rains in Lech, it will definitely rain in e.g. Westendorf. If that's the case (rain/snow in Austria), your only likely option for good weather would be to switch to the Southern Alps (Italy, Dolomites). But the Dolomites have had very little snow up till now.
