One team spent a small fortune on taxis, which got them a 17 minute advantage that was completely eroded because the next stage involved getting a ferry that goes one a week, and put everybody in the same boat

I think they do a really good job casting that show as they find people that are likeable and willing to put themselves out there a bit/lot but that guy just seems like a bit of a tosser. Maybe his "journey" will be about recognising that and developing some resilience. The way they've spunked cash he's going to need to be giving BJs to truckers to get to Newfoundland.

People in a ski club who arrive together and then apparently all must ski together, in a bunch of 25 or more, on the same trail in a bunch. I can't stand being in a group of more than 4. Why this need to ski with a crowd?

People who identify as ‘off-piste skiers’ and will therefore only ski off piste, even if that means traversing for ages making 1 turn then traverse all the way back, repeated til they reach the lift, then regale their group about their off piste escapades as if it was the most thrilling experience of their lives.

Hard agree. Also those who object to skiing on pistes at all to reach off-piste lines, and would rather not ski those lines, however good, than set ski on a piste to reach them.

Do these people actually exist? I've skied with the odd person who'd rather ski absolute dogshit offpiste for the challenge rather than just ski ok groomers ( and done it myself when traffic makes pistes demo derbies) but avoid all and any pistes seems implausible.

Yeah, they do: I've seen people complain about having to do an hour or two's piste skiing a day to reach good snow on an 'off-piste' trip.

I get some people like challenging conditions. But it’s the ones who think off piste skiing is traversing all the way to a point, one turning then traversing all the way back, ok, technically you’re on skis and you’re off piste so it’s off piste skiing but it’s not reeeaaalllly off piste skiing because all your doing is traversing there and traversing back. I don’t get it.

Yes. Opinions were divided. Doesn't bother me either way, but as a parent to young children, this week we've enjoyed comparing notes when we've met up at lunchtime...

I get a giggle when I see people ski in fancy dress, certainly when a unicorn overtakes you on a black doing perfect carving turns, they get a way hey from me. The funniest I ever saw though was a group of lads learning to ski in kilts, they were minding themselves going down blue runs, and a fall was worse for them than others, nothing like a dose of cold snow around the twig and giggleberries to make you rethink the outfit.

lol! I can picture it, my daughters used to call the snow thats thrown up as you ski , snow sparkles, imagine the snow sparkles, I hope he wasn't trying to impress the ladies, sure he would need a spy glass to find the lad, after a day out off piste in a kilt.

Acid? well if you stick to blues, it could make it a fantastic experience. My oldest daughter, smokes a bit of weed, and at the top of the Kandahar in Garmish, she told me that it was a whole lot of nope, so she went down the side track and I met her at the bottom, we had a beer, and went back up, next time she said race ya mam!............ she had had a bit of weed, and it took away all of her fears, I still beat her, lol.. I quit smoking a few years ago, and am scared to try weed, just in case it brings me back to smoking, and I don't trust edibles, I'd probably eat a tray of brownies, then get the ick.

Exhibit a: someone complaining about having to ski for an hour or two on-piste each day to reach the assorted off-piste descents accessible from Arabba (& more particularly that he wasn’t allowed to ski just off the side of the pistes to get there).

I would guess he was complaining because the same destination could have been skied partly on an off-piste route, which would have been more entertaining? (Though if this was going round the Sella Ronda there are large parts of that which don't have an alternative, so the person chose the wrong holiday and should have based him(?)self at Arabba.) Possibly the guide didn't explain that the snow would be crap or thought some in the group would be too challenged. I was with a group once in the latter case at Alagna. We skied a lot of on-piste that day, though passing good, untracked off-piste I would have enjoyed. The guide thought some of us might not cope with the fairly heavy snow.

As far as I can see he's complaining that the off-piste route he wanted to ski (alongside the pistes) to get there was prohibited by the resort (to minimize the risk of triggering an avalanche that could affect the pistes). I get being disappointed that one can't ski tempting-looking lines because they're prohibited: I don't get concluding that Arabba is an inappropriate base for an off-piste trip as a result; personally I judge the quality of an off-piste trip by the quality of the descents, not by how little time I had to spend on pistes to get to them. I mean: each to their own, but this is something I really don't get.

@jmr59, yes, I agree with the general point. The judgement of the guide should always be respected. Though I think the skiing mentioned was travelling TO the Arabba skiing, rather than the Arabba skiing. The reasons you state wasn't specified.
Arraba is one of the best off-piste destinations anywhere for good skiers. That said, the Dolomites is the only place I have ever seen a sign saying "no off-piste skiing". It is a general sign there rather than one specific to a particular bit threatening a piste (I can't actually think of a slope like that there, and if there were the resort would dynamite it). The signs are always there, and have no correlation with actual conditions and I have been told just absolve the officials in general of any responsibility. Guides in my experience ignore them (but I only have experience of two guides there, though on many holidays).
