@bigtoe, I’d stay in Avoriaz. Not much difference in day to day cost and you won’t get soaked getting to and fro. Having said that it looks like rain everywhere on Saturday, but at least you’ll be close to your apartment.

Hi, can anyone currently in Morzine give an good run down on current conditions, snow depths at Pleney level.
Also what are the local weather forecasts as any forecasts I can see vary substantially.
Thanks

@skidoo, snow at the top of Pleney should remain ok. I think the bottom slopes will be washed away apart from those with man made snow. Everywhere will become icy once the rain stops and temperatures return to normal.
Sorry to seem gloomy but that’s how it is.

Yes I think I’ll work as much as possible and let the crowds battle over the strips of ice for the next wee while. Such a shame as things were shaping up nicely. Yesterday morning was epic.

Hello from Chatel. Rain almost stopped, just a bit of drizzle now.
Will see tomorrow what's left of the snow in Super Chatel area

Snow was nice up in Avoriaz today, although the weather wasn’t.
Both the runs down to Linga and Prodains were in good shape. It was a bit like Easter skiing, with soft bumpy pistes.

Sitting on plane at Geneva now. Is Morzine looking ok for snow today? Or would we be better heading to Avoriaz?

Pistes are perfect in Avoriaz this morning and empty.
Although beginning to soften up now at 10:15. Sorry don’t know about Morzine, we won’t head over there until next week once it starts to get busy here

Yes Lindarets and PD are nice, it suddenly got busier around 11am and the blue run down next to the stash was looking a bit thin, but everywhere else was fine.
Just done the Grand Combes all the way down to Prodains and only passed a couple of people

No rain in Chatel. We are in Super Chatel warming up. Pistes are in fair condition, a bit like April afternoon. Grass sticking out here and there. Much better than I feared

Slightly off topic: I was planning to ski in Chatel Jan 19-26, but recent rain events made me to think twice. I know it is still too far away, but generally how reliable is snow in Chatel in the end of Jan? Is it often you get rain that time of a year? I guess I can stay in Avoriaz, but would prefer more tradicional village rather than purpose build resort

@alex_sauvage, it will be fine. In any case most of the skiing is spent between 1500 and 2000m.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@alex_sauvage, you're looking to go to a ski resort in basically the middle of the ski season... Either it's a terrible winter, in which case almost nowhere else will have snow either, they've built the resort in teh same place but managed to fool people for years, or you'll be fine.

Heading out to Morzine on 05/01 and keeping an eye on the long range forecast from Meteoblue. Appreciate it's still too far away to predict with great certainty but getting worried about how the trend seems to be so warm and dry between now and then!
Hopefully the temps drop and it pukes down soon.

Miserable day today in Chatel. Skied with our class for 2 hours and called or a day. Temperature is dropping, so some snow is possible today higher up.
Going to PLJ tomorrow and looking forward for sunny weather.
At this point all we want is for the rain to stop. Fresh snow would be a bonus, but there is plenty of skieble terrain as is

Has anyone been to the new Le Crêt restaurant halfway down the front of super Châtel?
I think there used to be a crêperie there but I didn't go because crêpes aren't my idea of a ski lunch.
Whilst I really like the ski area, i don't much like any of the restaurants at super Châtel, so it would be good to have a new option.

@under a new name, perhaps worried is a bit too strong a term but it would be nice to be able to slide into Morzine from the pleney. As you say I'm sure there will still be plenty of fun to be had in Avoriaz

We skied avoriaz today and got absolutely soaked as it rained so much! Left just after lunch as we were too wet.
We were planning on trying Morzine/ les gets tomorrow as we prefer easier runs. Was anyone there today? Is there enough open there?

i bought a 1 day pass on Saturday for Morzine having skiid Avoriaz all week. Conditions were hopeless-it seemed they had forced the opening so as not to ruin next years booking numbers etc. I did 2 runs. Asked for my money back- they refused- I went home in a huff.
Stay clear and head directly to Avoriaz.

Beautiful day today - sunny and frosty in the morning, warming up a little bit now.
Pistes in PLJ and Avoriaz in good conditions. Looks like cannons have been blasting most of the night.
Don't know what Super Chatel looks like, will head back there soon.
Enjoyng lunch and sun in La Poya

Thanks for all the reports everyone. Heading to Avoriaz on Saturday, but concerned it’s going to be sheet ice by then!
Can see most slopes are open but are they still in good nick or did the rain destroy them?

@levart,
1. Not sure how it will be sheet ice
2. Piste bashing is not just about smoothing, but breaking up (piste counselling?)
3. Rain - at least in Chamonix - was in fairness up to ~2,200 but not sustained. Cold and sunny for next few days should allow cannons ro run, etc.

Skied super Châtel yesterday and it was pretty good, especially considering the lack of artificial snow over the back, on chalet neuf. A few pistes closed and a few bare patches but snow was in pretty good condition on piste, with a couple of cms of fresh.

Yes, Super Chatel is in good condition too with exception of a couple places where grass is sticking through. The barbousine þarea is good as well, no way to ski down to Petit Chatel though. Also the piste down to the top of barbousine is closed although my wife tells me she saw people downloading it, so either they ski down the closed run on there is another one I couldn't find.
Pistes in Avoriaz will be just fine. They run canons overnight. It doesnt get warm enough to melt the snow sufficiently for it to turn into ice. Yes, it gets very hard, so do bring/hire good carvers with razor sharp edges.
