Cr@ppy forecast for the next couple of days though
"Significantly milder conditions with foehn effects are forecast at least for a short period of time."
Lets hope it is a short period of time... it's not unusual to get this but it is annoying. Looks like a little more snow coming next week too, fingers crossed.
The Fohn after the storm was known about a few days ago.(back on Page5)

Hopefully tomorrow we will get a storm out of the low pressure come in BUT it going to get WARM again before the next weekend
Also we knew the next Atlantic front was too variable to predict any amount of precipitation.
Now its confirmed there will not be a huge follow up to the initial 1Metre+ dump

sah, is it really that crappy? One day of +4 at the village level, and F/L of 2,000m then it starts to reduce....

Hopefully not, but the foehn blowing is never good news. I don't believe exact temperature forecasts, but when the "official" forecast says it will be significantly milder it's not great news. Hopefully it will be a brief interlude, I'm not sure it threatens snow higher up but it would be nicer to be without it.

The new Kombibahn "Weibermahd. This was the summer upgrade (old 4 seat) for the eventual link up to Warth-Schröcken
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Is the upgraded lift the one on the right? The run where the speed trap is? Bit weird for them to upgrade a 3 chair with a 4 chair?
You know it makes sense.

Timmaah, it's part of a bigger project which aims to link Warth and Lech.

Might take a trip over to St Anton next week as need new touring boots, bindings and skis - anybody else in St Anton next week? (please either respond here or send me a PM).
What's the score with skiing up the side of the pistes in St Anton - is it accepted or can you run into problems?

Slim chance I'll be out there for a long weekend... will see what the weather does:-)
I've never seen anyone skinning up the pistes, but I suspect you'll be fine at this time of year, it's not going to be busy.

Maybe worth a skin up Rendl while its not open. I did this a couple of seasons ago & got some great 1st fresh turns in on the descent
Are you awfully sure that's wise... isn't there a chance of avalanche control if the area is unopened?

I meant the lifts not open. Nothing to stop folk from hiking in the hills (except where its illegal) & for sure you should check the weather & avi bulletins.

Sure, but while the lifts are closed on that side there may be avalanche control work during the day - not sure what the rules/advice are for the pisted areas. I certainly would not skin up (or ski down) a closed piste in St Anton, I saw a couple of slides cross closed runs a couple of years ago. Off piste is different - that's up to you and you base your decision on the available data, but I'd be very wary about skiing around an unopened ski area right now.

Folks these guys are pretty well known in St Anton for Off-Piste guiding.
I see there website has been updated with a list & description of all the well trodden Off Piste Routes but by no means all the Off Piste areas.
I could only find videos for the Valluga but maybe they will update during the season.
With the embedded Google Earth I find the site a bit difficult.
Great link, thanks! I only checked their site a few days ago so this must be a recent update.
Seems like they are giving away the crown jewels by publishing this:-) I doubt here is anything that is not already in Andy Thurner's book though.

I think their old site was better...Bit surprised that they've done that with the off piste routes though!

Just over a week ago people were greeting the crystals of frozen fog as "snow".... how the world changes!
You know it makes sense.

Just got back late yesterday after 3 great days skiing in St Anton with 2 pals. As we left at 4pm it had been snowing all afternoon and the conditions were much improved. The snowfall early last week have given it a really good base but this was followed by strong sun Friday/ Saturday which had softened it. We skid off piste 100% of the time over the 3 long days, including Mattun from both Kapall and Schindler and it was in great condition, especially high up from Schindler. Kappall also in great condition and the back bowl down to the drag is great powder, especially late yesterday. The bowls under Zammemoosbahn and into Kandahar were great fun. Raus from Schindler is in great nick, and powder off to the right is in good condition. Only downside really was that Albona and Rendl are not yet open but that'll wait until January for me, enough for a 3 day trip for now.
If youre going in next few days/ for Xmas/ New Year you've nothing to worry about, its as good as ever, just needs a bit more snow but this week will sort that.

boabski, Mental, couldnt get near it, never seen it so busy, the whole of the slope completely full, massive screens/ TV etc..........good atmosphere on Saturday but crappy music though - had to make do with the Graibli opposite, all that loud rock music, large beers, cheese-burgers etc, bummer eh?!! PS The barmaid's still there!

In the regions along the Main Alpine Ridge, considerable avalanche danger prevails above approximately 2600 m, a direct result of the recently formed snowdrift accumulations on steep, shady slopes. Slab avalanches can be triggered even by the additional loading of one single backcountry skier or freerider. This was amply demonstrated by a series of avalanches in recent days

Nice - St Anton the epicentre of the dump
Still a month to go until my visit but should be a great base by then.

Unfortunately I have too many holidays left and have to take a few weeks off work (until mid Jan 2012). St Anton is an overnight train ride away. Suppose it's time to get the skis out of the cellar
