davidof, slightly harsh- I've had attentive and extremely friendly service in French resorts (admittedly in the good restaurants), I'd rather take a pic-nic than stop in one of the crap ones.

I nearly always ski in Italy, partly because we have friends there. On our last two ski holidays I've noticed an increasing number of French tourists, including school parties. Perhaps skiing in France is now getting so expensive that even the French can't afford it!

And why is Serre Chevalier full of Italians on weekends if Italy is so much less expensive ? Coach loads up from Turin on the Italian National Day holiday in March, and they drove past the Milky Way to get there.

..and Isola 2000 as many Italians as French ...??? Weird when they are closer to Limone ( arguably a better all-round resort), must be something about France. No "pasta with everything"?

Hells Bells, here likewise, though mostly at New Year when for some reson the entire chav population of Turing likes to party in 2Alpes. No idea why, and we don't see huge numbers of Italians for the rest of the winter.
2Alpes visitors last season were approximately half French and half foreigners (slightly more French). Of the foreigners the biggest groups were Brits and Belgians, with increasing numbers of Dutch and East Europeans. Eastern Europe is an emerging market, and their TOs are getting some good deals in order to encourage more visitors.

I don't think France is that expensive, it has some of the best if not the best skiing in the world, outside of heli ski fantasy trips to Alaska. If you want to go for best suba diving in the world for example that's also going to cost you a few quid.
Kind of easy, if you think it costs to much go somewhere else or do it on the cheap, which is easy if all you want to do is ski. However if you turn up with lemonade money dont expect champagne

adie, So prices are higher in france because it has the "best skiing in the world" - given the snow conditions this year in many french resorts were prices reduced for the not-so-world class conditions?

waynos, I believe some resorts started to discount their lift passes towwards the end of the season, but perhaps not all of them.

But nobody's worried about a difference of a few quid a day on a lift pass. It's the important things like lager and spaghetti bolognese that make a skiing destination truly world class.

Local gossip (from the ex-MGM salesman now running his own immo, so probably fairly reliable) is that many of the buyers for the latest big MGM apartment development in Bisanne 1500 are Italian. We only have one Italian (with a Dutch wife) in our complex. Majority French, with a smattering of Brits, Belgians and Dutch.

That's not really true. One of the best sites in the world is Scapa Flow, and that is incredibly cheap, about £500 for the week including transport, food, accomodation and all diving. It's only expensive to go diving somewhere because of the cost of long haul flights - the actual diving in luxury resorts in the Maldives, the Red Sea, and other places is much cheaper than in more western resorts. There are expensive places to dive, but they are not normally the best dive sites in the world.

Apparently some resorts did not offer discounts. I know someone who went to La Clusaz in the Easter hols and said the 6 day lift pass was not reduced despite only 3 lifts being open.

snowymum, yes but there were undoubtedly Austrian, Swiss and Italian resorts that also didn't reduce their prices.
So if we assume that you pay the standard lift pass price for 'normal' conditions how p1ssed off would you be if on a powder day you got to the first lift and were told 'Desole fantastic conditions today that'll be a 20 euro premium'.

freeheelskier - I wouldn't choose la clusaz at Easter myself as the holiday we had there in early march (10 yrs ago) was lacking in snow. However apparently the last few Easters there has been plenty of snow there. They were not expecting sympathy merely commenting that they were surprised the weekly lift pass hadn't been discounted considering how little was open.
Chris Angus - Why would you pay more to use the lifts on a perfect powder day? It is not as if they are going to be running any more lifts than a normal day with no fresh snow? However if only 3 lifts are open there is a substantial electricity saving.

My comment on reducing prices was more aimed at the price of food and beer, adie seem to be implying you pay for what you get and as in his view france is best skiing in the world then you should not moan about paying high prices for drinks. Personally I see little direct relationship between the quality of skiing and the price of beer or food in a mountain hut. Now thinking about it when we were hit by rain in Fernie, BC in Jan one year and the resort closed most runs and lifts for a couple of weeks most the eating places (hotels at the ski base) slashed the price of food.

Yes it was a great huge generalization but I think that is pretty much the target market of businesses in the very large French ski resorts: people who they think don't know better and will keep coming back year after year.

snowymum, I doubt there's a direct correlation between price of electricity and lift pass prices although I'm sure it would make a good excuse for raising prices!
I (and many others) would rather ski on a powder day therefore 'demand' is higher so the market will bear a higher price- give me two resorts with identical skiing, one with powder and one in a dry spell and tell me I had to pay more to ski in the powder resort I'd pay the extra (within reason). You would have thought less people would want to ski when only 3 lifts are open therefore to stimulate demand you'd cut prices, however it seems your friend did pay therefore they and the other punters demonstrated the market would bear the price. Fair enough that your friend may have been disappointed at what their lift pass gave them though.
Lift companies aren't charities they are profit making organisations, they rightly will charge what they think they can get away with. If we collectively are prepared to pay the price they charge then that simply affirms that they have got the pricing about right.

davidof, and they're probably right. Inertia/lack of imagination..... (I am guilty of this too)

On the other side of the coin, why is it that we expect high street prices on the mountain, yet go to Disneyland and people are queueing up to pay £4 for a slice of pizza? Captive market. And it's part of the cost of doing that on a holiday. Mountain restaurant prices are part of the cost of skiing. My experience is that France is not particularly more expensive than any other mountain restaurant in a comparable sized resort and/or location on the mountain.
For those commenting about cheaper passes when there are less lifts open etc, in December they discount the lift passes because there is a lower chance of snow. For a 3V lift pass in December it was 170 euros, which considering the vast ski area is very good value. We've also had PDS passes discounted because it was the end of the season last year, but then it is generally lower altitude so much less chance of snow and more chance of closed lifts. As it was the conditions were excellent, but that's by the by really. You pay your money you take your choice.

In general my experience is the reverse, with the exception of Swiss resorts maybe. Prices are what they are though and things will only change if punters vote with their feet, which is why given the choice I prefer to head to Austrian resorts
