Well the forecast is for it to get a bit colder which is no bad thing, I'd prefer a steady temp drop over several weeks folowed by plenty of snow and cold temps early in the season to give a good base

I was looking at the Murren cams this morning and couldn't believe Murren Tourism stated that they had received 20cms in the village .The webcam from the Eiger looking down at the Murren train station didn't look to me that they had received that much !!

Chris Brookes, I've no idea what's going on with that weather report, I saw it and laughed, the snow was very light, it had gone from the platforms at kline schidegg station by this pm so my guess is arround 0.5cm at 2000M maybe 2cm at 3000M I suppose but not much more, maybe someone said 20mm and they wrote cm ?

Yes but it is still early yet, I'd like it to start snowing properly in a week or two, in the mean time I'd like a nice steady drop in temp so that when the snow does come down it will stay, wet snow now that stays could be a disaster, it won't stick to the long grass so as soon as it warms up in Feb the snow melts really quickly

Might have to start doing a snow dance in my garden if the temps dont start dropping and staying low

We went there last year in February with a large group. There was only one ski run closed (but we skied it anyway, did a little walking). We stayed in Interlake, which was a major hike to the lifts. We returned back to the hotel after 6PM every night and never saw the town open, but we had a great time!!!
I believe it would have been better to stay at one of the major resorts. I strongly recommend Murren and going to “The Top of Europe” and the 007 run. They are a definitely “Do Not Miss” I think it’s a great idea to tour around and visit all three major ski resorts and stay at one of the major resorts.

Weather improving, i.e getting slowly colder over the next 5 days, some more snow now on top, but only a few cm's so it may melt, fingers crossed for that El Nino effect

Relax Chris B.! First time I went there was over Christmas in a bad season and our conversations were usually "How many Schilthorns did you ski today?".....that and the old drag below it(I hope it has gone!) were the only lifts open for skiing. People watching in the queues became de rigueur. The Lauberhorn was skis on, skis off, on again but we skied it! The top of Grindelwald had reasonable cover, icy, but again we skied it. It did whet my appetite and I had to return to see the area with total snow cover.....wonderful!

Hi...was linked to this site from another ski forum when I asked about Wengen. Taking a trip out there in January for 10 days (bliss) right after I return from a another trip locally in the US. This thread has been very helpful for information. Looks like most of the accomodations are ski-in. Is there lifts straight from the village or can you ski to them? Or is it a trolly or a walk?
Thx! Lisa

I do love it when they all go to Wengen as it leaves the lifts and pistes FREE

Does it seem more economical to purchase by "package" (include lift) or get lodging and lift apart? Seems like few offer lift included. I don't think anyplace will be a dissappointment...it's been several years since I've skied outside the US so I'm just elated to be going.

nextascent, Some weeks offer special deals with slight discounts on the overall price just compare the prices to see if the week you want is one of them.
I guess you have yet to decide on your accomodation, what sort of place are you looking for ?

D G Orf, actually as long as the bed is cozy and the food is hearty (eat like an animal) I'm pretty happy. The key is the people...if the owners are friendly and welcoming and put in that extra care, I'm happy. So: must have - bed, WC, enough room to not walk into a wall. would be nice to have - sauna, a masseusse and a balcony. Staying 8 nights so I need to consider overall cost. I'll be on the slopes most of the time anyway.

nextascent, my favorite is the Alpenrose, a *** Hotel, can ski to the door via a short off piste route just as you get to the edge of the village, excellent food and plenty of it, great people it's been in the same family since it was built over 100 years ago, most rooms a reasonable size with en suite, no sauna or masseusse though, South facing rooms have balcony with great views, However it is a 7 minute walk uphill to the center of the village, but in the morning they run a free shuttle service for those wearing ski boots, or those just to lazy to walk up the hill, from the hotel door to the village center
If you don't want the walk, the Hotel Hirschen has a reputation for good food and is ski in ski out, one of the other snowheads stayed there this summer and only had nice things to say about it. Similar prices to the Alpenrose though.
A cheaper hotel is the Bernerhof right in the middle of the village, rooms are supposed to be a bit more basic and the foods ok.
Some of the 4* hotels have saunas, pools etc. but many of them will let you use their facilities for a small charge.
Go and have a look at my website
The Jungfrau Region for some views of the area (warning the pictures are pretty big)

D G Orf, these look great....thanks for posting and also linking to your website...very nice. I think right now it's between Alpenrose and Hotel Hirschen. It's been much too long since I've skied in Europe! But I'll be skiing this weekend here in Colorado, so I can't complain. Thanks for all the help.

nextascent, Lauterbrunnen might be a more suitable place to stay if your intention is to ski both Wengen and Murren.....however Wengen has a lot more atmosphere. The Hotel Silberhorn in L. has a sauna and used to be reasonably priced.

But, it is rare to be able to ski down to Lauterbrunnen and you can only do so from Murren

Most people like to ski from the door instead of jumping on a 20 minute train ride to ski...just my thoughts on Lauterbrunnen location for skiing

Mac46, Apart from the Hirshen, and the Brunner which are both slightly above the village center and the Park and Falken which are both at the top of the Nursery slopes there are not really any ski out hotels, most of them however you can ski almost all the way back to.
nextascent, I expect to get there arround Jan 30th for just over 2 weeks
