Steezy, yes you're right, from Thursday all lifts are in service. It says that the Ahorn valley runs are closed (natch), but doesn't say if the link from Penken to Eggalm is skiable or not (I would guess yes as the lift from the bird's nest restaurant must be and that is ski access only).
The ticker on the main website also says 'thanks to artificial snow we are offering good skiing conditions'.
Happy sliding

Deliaskis, DB , Having skied there yesterday, I'd have guessed that the majority of the runs are open, with the lower slopes probably getting a bit patchy where they don't have snow-cannons. Skied down to Finkelberg midstation yesterday, and the snow was good. We considered trying to work our way down the closed ski-route (11a), but decided against it (new skis!)
On Monday you couldn't get to Eggalm from Penken (or vice versa). It is fully conceivable though that they are now open.
Some steep runs (e.g. the 78% gradient Hakikari) or runs without snow-cover will prob be closed until there's a big enough dump.

I'm going there as well the 5th of Jan. It seems to have improved, the Skiwelt area now has 17 lifts open, 2 more then yesterday. Temps are low but are increasing by Friday, I pray they go down again . I hope they will make lot of use of their snow cannons because there is not much snow expected by Friday.

Good news and good news!
Saalbach announces that more lifts will be operational for the holidays.
They doubled the number of the lifts in operation.
Mayrhofen operates all the lifts from today. 40 cm snow on the top.

kerekip, Thanks. just checked it out and it looks as though almost everything at Saalbach - Hinterglemm is open, though I think it may be a bit thin lower down.

It looks like only 53% of the lifts were open in SH today. With only sun, light rain and modest snow in the forecast, conditions could get pretty miserable by New Year.

Whitegold, Don't be so sceptical. The forecasted freezing levels are low enough to keep most of the (extensinve) snow-cannons running and to maintain what snow there is. They've been opening up more lifts/slopes over the last few days and I suspect they'll continue to open more.

It was 5c at 2000m around midday today (Sat). The sun is blazing. There is more brown than white on one side of the valley. Saalbach, and much of Austria, pressingly needs a dump.

Went past St Johan im Pongau on friday the 22nd.The village runs appeared to be closed, but the snow blowers were all running (2:30pm). The slopes were covered but only just. There was no snow on any roofs in the village. Unrelenting blue skies.

Timmaah, unfortunately, not too much. Dry weather is predicted for this week.
Perhaps, it is worth trying the smaller and not so popular resorts.
My friend has just arrived from Saalbach and Zell am See. Very crowded and pistes were not really good by noon.
They tried a small resort called Rauris (25 kms from ZAS). There were only a few people on the perfectly maintained pistes.
Small resort, but surrounded by beautiful mountains. It was the best skiing of their entire week.

Semmering, near Vienna, just opened before Christmas, but situation on the slopes got worse here.
Semmering is the host of the female World Cup runs on December 28 and 29. Now they needed to close the WC run from the public to be able to hold the races.
But it was the only piste they operated for the holidays. Skiers arriving here for the holidays are not happy with this decision.
It is too mild even at nights, they are not able to use the snow cannons.
At the moment, it looks that the race can be held.

Well im goign to neustift am stubai, and the glacier has got little under half of their pists open, with them mostly being blue runs... was hoping for some black runs and theyre closed and i guess they dont want to maintain them with fake snow as its too costly, which is why i was hoping for some snow so ic ould go down them at least once or twice whether theyre opened or not...

Report on the holidays in a few resorts in the Salzburg region:
Saalbach-Hinterglemm: Limited operation with only 16 lifts. Snow depth is 35 cm, another 20-40 cm snow badly needed for this resort.
Zauchensee: 45 cm snow, the majority of the slopes were open
Flachau: 60 cm snow. All the pistes and lifts were open.
Obertauern: 70 cm snow, 23 lifts, Tauernrunde is open in both directions.

I'm currently in Zell am See weather fantastic and so is the skiing. There are only a few runs closed. If your resort has snow cannons you will have good skiing

frostie1861, SkyEurope goes from Machester to Salzburg, and BA, http://www1.skyeurope.com/en/ SkyEurope have a deal on at the mo, NO Taxes. We used it last year, and have booked again this year - superb airline. Last year we got a taxi via the Salzburg Airport website, to Hinterglemm, this year to Obertauern, which looks to be a good choice so far! The whole DIY experience was so good we won't use a TO again, unless it's a very, very cheap last minute deal.

kerekip, http://www.saalbach.com/SnowReport.93.0.html?L=1 shows 34 lifts open in Saalbach-Hinterglem-Leogang. Looking at the interactive piste map on the same site there's only 11 (all but 1 drags and mainly baby lifts) that are closed. Seems (based upon the 'official' info on website) to be a lot more than just limited.

kamikaze, you are right about the number of the open lifts. Sorry, I meant limited skiing. Many of these lift serve as a feeder, taking skiers up to the open pistes, but pistes closed beside these lifts. As I see the map of the open pistes, it looks that only main blue pistes are open on most of the hills, except for Leogang, and Schattberg peaks where more pistes are open.

marctimms, The glacier at Kaprun (on Kitzsteinhorn) will prob offer the best snow (just about doable via bus Saalbach->Zell and then Zell->Kitz and taxiable). Or if you've got transport and feeling adventurous, you could possibly try somewhere like Obertauern.
However - I wouldn't worry too much about Saalbach. Their have excellent snow-making facilities, and almost everything on the Asitz mountains and Schattberg (my personal favourite bits) is open. As per above post, there's snow currently being forecast for start of next week.
One thing you need to appreciate with Saalbach (and most other resorts in Salzburgerland) is that the mountains are "grass mountains". In most of the Western Alps (e.g. France) you often need 50cm+ of snow to cover the larger rocks, and lots of smaller stones often start to show through. In Saalbach if you had 30cm top to bottom (which admittedly they don't quite have yet), then that's good coverage. The south facing slopes above Hinterglemm will be dodgy as they are in the sun all day. But if I were you I'd head straight to the Asitz peaks between Saalbach and Leogang, along with the slopes on Schattberg.
p.s. let me know how it is, am going out myself mid-Jan

Timmaah, looking forward to the pictures from Stubai and I want to hear your opinon on the resort.
They claim they have 110 km pistes, but this is an exaggeration, at least all my friends believe so.
It is not easy to check it, the piste length data for each piste have been removed from their web site.
