@chubuking, It'll be very quiet in resort that week, my suggestion is to go to Pettneu or Flirsch if you are looking for cheaper deals, knock a few doors and you'll be sure to get a bargain early season. Or jump on the St Anton website and do an accommodation search, you can search by area, but it'll be more expensive than if you just go and speak to them directly. No such thing as a cheap lift-pass deal btw, all they are doing is rolling it up in the overall cost, buy accommodation from the hotels directly and lift pass from lift station. |
well i suppose in the weekend will be relative busy
I spoke with Intersport about Ski Depot and they mentioned at Friday - Saturday they will stay open till 18.30 instead of 18.00
I know maybe it is not important but
1. much snow
2. sunny Sunday
3. some announcement such this from intersport
all these make me suspicious
We will see hot it will goes....hopefully will be really quiet

What do you mean with "a couple more weeks"?
We plan on heading to St. Anton on 16 December, would be nice to have Rendl open by then

By the looks of https://winter.intermaps.com/skiarlberg?lang=en it appears that Rendl is already open today!
Edit: might be an error in the map, because it doesn't seem like much is happening at Rendl when you look at webcams...

@stanton, hardly unprecedented. Roads and railways have been closed before.
In one of more recent visits, we just got in. We arrived at lunchtime. Everything was locked down that night. Cannot remember how long it lasted, but several days, before the police allowed escorted convoys of cars and trucks to enter the village.

@ulmerhutte, you might not be aware of it, but for us here in Europe, this is very unusual. Normally early December is still late autumn.
130 cm in Lech, and 50 cm in Munich, potential roadclosures in early December: quite unique!

It’s not THAT unusual; happens every ~5 years or so. Nov/Dec 2019 (or 17 or 18; I forget!) was similar, but started earlier.

@clarky999, not as much as this year; 130 cm (and counting) in Lech-village, 50 cm in Munich!

@clarky999, yep nothing out of the ordinary yet, we were in St Jakob in Feb 1999 when they bunded snow across the road by the Shell station and the town was closed off for a week, nobody in or out. As we drove out once open we parked to take snow chains off and as we drove away the avalanche came down and across the main road where we’d been parked. Same day as the Galtür avalanche. Same again 2017 we were snowed in Lech for 3-4 days. Also think 2019 was a good one too, we were in Warth and Bregenzerwald was closed for in/out traffic for a few days, road down to Schröcken was a 3m high tunnel.

@Markymark29, Oh come on! February is not the first weekend of December. That's the point here. Of course this would be quite 'normal' (for Arlberg) in February...
Never ever did I see pic's from our hotel in Lech with so much snow in the garden in early December. In 20 years!

@Langerzug, I arrived in St Anton Nov 23 2008 to over a metre in the village, and I’ve had at least 4 years since then where I’ve been skitouring in/from St Anton, St Christoph or Alpe Rauz with similar amounts of snow.
It’s great, it doesn’t happen every year, but it does happen reasonably regularly.

Not a surprise… ÖBB has issued travel advisories, warning of delays, closures, and bus replacement services. Likewise, Innsbruck airport is advising of restricted flight operations, though not complete closure.

1999 - my first visit to St Anton and my first ever ski holiday. Just managed to get in with help from the Austrian army - as they hurled my luggage off the train and into a snow drift I did consider whether we should’ve booked Tenerife instead

Why pay €30 for a Schnitzel or €8 Beer in St Anton when you can get it a €15 Schintzel or a €3.50 beer in the smaller less well known ski area.. |
Problem is that St Anton accommodation prices for anything half decent is over £1500 per week. Compare that with similar standard hotels in Dolomites or Aosta resorts at £1000 and the Arlberg is significantly overpriced. I've got BA flights to Innsbruck the end of January that I am seriously thinking of changing to Milan or Turin that would "save" potentially £600-£800 on the overall holiday costs and still give me a great ski holiday.

We were in St Anton at the same time as you in 1999. I remember it well, fortunately we were there for 2 weeks because our first week (last week in Feb), the lifts were closed for 3 days until they slowly started to open up. The following week was amazing with all the new snow though. The snow on my car roof was accumulating by about 1 foot every day while it was snowing. I've never seen that much snow in town since then.

This is the dilemma I’m facing and that’s going during the low season in December! It does seem very expensive but snow coverage is the best I’ve seen In Austria in comparison to other countries. Still holding out for a last minute deal somewhere.

@chubuking, Aosta valley is looking good. Cervinia/Valtournenche with plenty of lifts running, Courmayeur with plenty fresh snow, La Thuile similar.
Whilst St Anton/Arlberg looks super it is not alone in having a great start to the season. My main point is that it has become well overpriced. I'm inclined to leave the Arlberg to those with deeper pockets than myself.

@skimastaaah, Stay down the valley? Some great deals to be had if you go out a bit, also fast ski buses into town. We've booked an airbnb this year, not paying crazy prices. 8 mins on ski bus is no great drama.

@Markymark29, I can stay in Zurs for the price of St Anton. I'm possibly going to delay a decision until the New year and have already checked out places like Klosterle and Pettnau, even looked at if a longer drive round to Warth is going to be worth it.

@Langerzug, Yes, Warth is very expensive, suggest he takes a look at Schroeken, or Steeg/ Holzgau in Lechtal.
@skimastaaah, Suggest Flirsch and Schnann, much better value than Pettneu. Klosterle OK but not great location for bussing in. Tbph Zurs is not somehere i'd think you'd get great value, its a kind of weird old-school drive-through place, food options limited etc, dead in summer and strange place in winter, you looked at Stubenbach?
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Markymark29, totally agree, that's more or less my thoughts. The options are pretty limited even with a hire car and current prices are not enticing enough to jump in.
