Amazing first day of the season in Les Gets yesterday. I did not manage to pull my son up to Nauchets but we still traced our path in virgin powder - including under the gondola where we usually never go.
Bring on next weekend!

For the 1st time this season we were caught out by the buying season pass in one place and starting elsewhere.
We got them from SERMA site. Mrs WoC, Son#1 and I went up from Ardent on Friday with no issue.
On Saturday we went with Sons#2 & #3 from PLJ and the gates showed the pass expired message when attempting to pass the gate.
Fearing we would have to ski over to Chaux Fleurie with their passes in our pockets, I just thought I'd ask at the pass office.
There was no queue, the guy simply put them in his machine and activated them. It took about 30 seconds.
So anyone worrying about the "need to start from where you bought it" thing - you don't.
Just go to the window and the staff will activate it for you.

That's bizarre. I had a season pass bought in Chatel last year. I often stayed with friends in Avoriaz and started a day's skiing there with no issue. I thought it was just the initial use of the pass, i.e. on the first day of the season, that had to be done in the place of issue.

lot of fresh snow today and even more wed/thurs to village level.....presume only Avoriaz is open this week, but nice to see the Haute Savoie top of a powder alert.

Rain coming Fri-Sat, which is just bad timing for the full opening weekend in the lower resorts.....better make the most of it, in what's a been relatively good pre-opening season

Yeah was looking at that rain forecast which is not good.

is there anything beyond the rain in the forecast to look forward to ? I arrive 28th Dec
|
|
|
|
|

@melandnick, yes and no......no because it's too far away to get any idea for what the weather will be for the alps, but yes because there is an usual roasting of the stratosphere going on, so this increases the odds of cold air hitting europe later. Too many variables at this range, but the medium term (early Jan, or next 2-3 weeks) certainly has potential.

We're arriving the 23rd what does the rain forecast mean in practical terms? will all the snow wash away?! Do you think we will be able to ski in Morzine still, or need to go to Avoriaz?

Hmmm, powder alert above 1900m. And how much skiing in the PDS is really above 1900m? Touring today, to be fair below 1600m, I found about 20cm of light snow on top of a layer of rained on mush. Not complaining mind, but not worth travelling any distance for. More tomorrow.

Yes Chatel has been awesome this week. Chatel, Morgins, Champoussin and Les Crosets links all open. Sunshine and powder today so first lifts again for me. Our guests in the chalet this week keep reminding themselves its only mid december and so do we! Hope the rain doesn't ruin it all next weekend

Chapeau to all other resorts for opening this week.....disappointing to see Les Gets closed with excellent conditions. Mont Chery has been covered in snow for several weeks now, but by the time it opens it will be ruined. A bit too steep to tackle in snow-shoes.....really need to consider a split board.
@zzz, to be fair to Morris, Haute Savoie includes Chamonix, Flaine etc

We were on the Tour lift last April level with the roofs, as someone was skiing down them. Guessing it was for this video.

@polo,
Mont Chery was really very good today, both sides
You really do need a split board, or better still, some skis......

Been to the area a few times but want to stay in avoriaz this time, stupidly worried its early season !! so the question, can i get a transfer from geneva to Prodains lift and take all the luggae up there? If so do you need to get ski pass before hand?
Thanks in advance. Flights all booked just the accom to sort

You can get a transfer to Prodains yes. You can then pay for a one way trip on the lift going up before starting your ski pass the following day

@bigtoe, why not get lift all the way to Avoriaz? Skiidy gonzalez do it at a reasonable price.
We’re out there that week and have a private with Skiidy, but I used them previously on a shared transfer and they take you up to the reception area.

Seemed to think it was a fortune! I’ll look again . Does seem to be a lot of chugging around with cases !

@bigtoe, I've done both the transfer to Prodains and the top station and find Prodains a bit more hassle as unless you are staying near it in Avoriaz you may still need transport when you get up there so it just builds in an extra step.
It is a bit cheaper than getting the transfer up to the top station but I never bother with it anymore. That might more BE a sign of my laziness
Also check you arrival and departure time as Prodains lift only operates between certain hours.

You know it makes sense.

Unless you are staying in the bottom half of the village its generally a better idea to get a lift to the top station, its not hugely more expensive.
If you do go the prodains route, then check out on the avoriaz app the map of the village, and then familiarize yourself with the resort building lift system. Basically many of the accomodation buildings have public elevators and lifts that allow you to ascend through the village with less leg work, Ie you walk in at ground floor take a lift or elevator and then its spits you out higher up the village as the buidling has dual level access. Particularly useful if you have heavy bags and don't want to pay for a horse and cart etc.
Hope that helps

@bigtoe, the price I paid at Easter was very reasonable. This time there are six of us on a private that was something like 450 Euro return. You still have to get from the reception area to your accommodation though.

Quick ski tour to the top of Chamossiere today before the rain/snow. Surprisingly good conditions above 1400m. They have made some massive piles of snow, some of which they are bashing to make sure the lower slopes have good cover. Lots of piste work generally in preparation for xmas week. Subject to Friday’s rain, I think conditions will be pretty good for next week.
Currently dumping with snow in Morzine town.

@gordonrussell76, damn right that helps, what a piece of gem advice
@SnoodlesMcFlude, ok thanks which company did you use, Skiidy is fully booked.
Ive got an option for a place at Nyon lift as well. Trouble is I've seen the rain forecast and feel height this time of year is always where i would need to be. Even at 1800 its low compared to Tignes where we have had a few good new years away.
So I'm thinking I should use Avoriaz, what's all yours general opinion. Money is a consideration so to stay lower and get the Prodains lift up each day will be cheaper but Flafing around is not what I like to do. Is the cost a lot more for food etc up there in comparison to morzine? Last time i went to morzine was a few years back.
Cheers

@zzz, glad to see someone using up the snow....what time did you hike the front of Mont Chery....pic here at 10.30am yest. Was pottering around on the Chavannes side as usual.
When I got back to apt I watched someone ski down the front in the afternoon with a dog.
2 more good days before the rain....mixed forecasts on the quantities, anywhere from 30ml to over 100ml. GFS (snowforecast) showing the worstcase as it would stay wet for 3 days....hopefully not that bad, ECM and other models have a lot less.

@SnoodlesMcFlude, My self and my two daughters. My eldest can only stay for three days and has a late plane to catch on the 1st of Jan. Then myself and the youngest go back late on the 5th. So the logistics are a tad trickier !

bigtoe pleasure. Just be warned the building public lifts don't always work, although normally okay at beginning of season, its usually mid season that they start playing up. YMMV
