Ah buggerations. I'm still unsure whether or not to book something this weekend, for 19th/20th for a week. And if so, VT, Meribel, or around the 1850 area.
When both funds and ski time are limited simple decisions like this become all bloody consuming!

@t40ora, come! There's plenty of good snow about. Base yourself in Meribel and you'll have easy access to wherever has the best conditions each day

06Z shows similar to 00Z, around the 15th precipitation, but FL still a little high for the lower resorts

@letsgetpiste, VT in Dec /Jan can be very cold, windblown and suffer from low cloud so yes, yellow lenses can be good. Trouble with 3V's though is that the weather can change dramatically over 2-3 hours so photochromic lenses are the best. I recommend Bolle modulators. |
Even with modulators I found myself confined to watching Zig & Sharko on French TV when I was there in January. A better skier might have been able to make more of the conditions, but there was so little definition in the snow that I just couldn't ski at all

That is sort of becoming my thought. There should still be enough about to get me out of Meribel? I don't mind taking the lift back in during the evening....

@t40ora, you won't have any problem getting out of Meribel and you won't need to take the lift back. There is copious snowmaking and they always keep some key pistes closed until Xmas week specifically to make sure they're not worn out.The main route in to the Chaudanne from Courchevel is fine at the moment but the other side is closed to protect it. There is snow on it, though.
If you're concerned at all book Mottaret rather than Meribel. Even better access but less nightlife. They've remodeled the access this year too so it's much friendlier at the end of the day
Surely if the snow is not so good for Christmas week people will all travel from Meribel to VT so basing yourself there just means you get stuck with the crowds in the morning/afternoon?? Mottaret or VT must make more sense for that week if booking now.

The uninitiated will. The clever ones will follow the sun around the Meribel valley and then ski Les Menuires in the afternoon. The snow in both those places will be better than VT unless it dumps down. I'm out here now and LM has easily got the grippiest snow plus as usual it's dead The snow in VT is very hard packed and icy in comparison.

@Millom, would agree. If this year is panning out like last year then that will be the case. It's been both warm and pretty light on the snow. If next week's forecast snow doesn't dramatically change things then VT would have to be the place for a 3vs trip imho.
@Raceplate ... or might the really initiated and clever ones actually stay in VT and then ski in the 4th valley earlier in the day returning to VT once some of the crowds head back home to their own valleys!

@Millom, I would ordinarily agree but this time last year Orelle was nearly unskiable. I will be there tomorrow or Saturday so will try to have a look at as much of the 3vs as I can.

@Millom, if it doesn't snow the runs off Bouchet will be lethal and there's no base to ski off the back. The red off the top of Bouchet is the only place I've ever seen the French restrict access to one skier at a time because it was so icy!

@Millom, I suggest you re-read my posts. I haven't said I don't go to VT, I said it doesn't have the best snow at the moment. That won't change unless it dumps which the forecasts say is unlikely.
It also has very limited options on bad weather days because everyone is going the same way. If you stay in the Meribel valley you have options every day and people choose different directions.
Enjoy your ignorance.

It was two chairs and then a long push at 3000m into Roseal!

I always thought the nicknames referred to Moraine and Col which are both still there and both still slow and freezing. I'm not a VT local though so happy to be corrected?

@letsgetpiste, the 3 Vs already have an alleged 600kms of piste*
The Bouchet Valley via the Col Pierre Lory was a classic mellow off piste route that required a little bit of effort to get in to. Even after the high Orelle chairs went in it was still a quiet off piste route, with some good steeper variations available from the chair. Now there is not only a zip line over the top but a piste down the middle. Why the need for the constant expansion when the area is already massive. Why not leave some long off piste runs for those who don't want corduroy?
Next they will be pisteing the Lac du Lou and Combe Sans Nom.
(* there is a whole can of worms to be opened regarding claimed piste lengths in various resorts but that is for another time...)
@offpisteskiing, My only experience has really been on "cordurouy", so pisted slopes are my only real measure when it comes to a resort.
I get the impression that the Bouchet Valley was an old favourite of yours and that there was little benefit to spoiling it...
What a pity the Lory route is now pisted. Kind of counter intuitive, more and more people on fat skis and less and less off piste routes left natural.
Maybe the lift company wanted another way back to Orelle in case the Caron cable is not available?
Leave the Lou alone!!!

@letsgetpiste, so anything skiable should be pisted and there should be no off piste left? It's not like there is a shortage of pisted runs to enjoy in the three valleys.

The Bouchet valley was/is my favourite route in the 3v. The feeling of solitude and really being away from it all was terrific so I'm in the disappointed camp too
