DJL , yes I think the Chamonix-meteo forecast is the one used by the tourist office here and is normally a reasonable indicator of what might happen.
So far this season I have not found the Meteo Suisse forecasts to be very accurate in terms of snowfall amounts and the GFS based sites (snow-forecast .com etc) are useful as an indicator of when it might snow, but are very hit and miss on amounts. I think the issue is that it is very very difficult to accurately model in advance how much rain is going to fall in a particular location - hence the wide variation in forecasts available on the internet.
I'll do a round up of all the available forecasts later today and post it here - as it will be interesting to see who will be nearest to getting it right. The added complication with this snow event is the forecast rain/snow limits and small changes in these could have huge consequences for the lower and mid-mountain slopes.

I have always felt quite pleased with myself when I have come down Rhododendrons - will feel doubly pleased next time then!
Not a lot of sun out first thing up in Avoriaz and you really felt the difference in temperature - we have lots to do at home so we left about 12, just as the sun was coming out. Quite busy at the top of some of the runs but with big groups who keep stopping so they really thinned out and quite often we were on our own. Watch out for more stones - but hopefully they will get buried soon.

Copied from the ChatelWeb.com site ...
A round up of the forecasts for tomorrow and Friday morning's snow event (or rain to snow event!) as of 2pm today (note that these may well change by this evening/tonight) ...
Meteo France suggest 29cm for upper slopes and 8cm for the lower slopes. Snow/rain limit of 1600m in the morning falling to 1400m in the afternoon / evening and 1100m to 900m overnight into Friday (see links below).
Chamonix-meteo.com suggest 35 to 55cm at 1500m for the event, with snow/rain limit varying between 900 and 1500m.
Meteo Suisse suggest 20 to 40cm for Morgins with snow/rain limit varying between 800m and 1200m.
Snow-forecast .com on its 6am update suggest 4cm for Chatel at 1200m and 12cm for 1700m.
The raw NAE model appears to suggest 25cm to 30cm of snow equivalent precipitation up until 6am Friday.
The raw GFS data appears to show 10 to 20cm of snow equivalent precipitation.
Links for the above info can be found on our snow forecast page - http://www.chatelweb.com/snow_forecast.php

Chatel Snow, from my French friends........"whenever there hasn't been a big snowfall leading up to Christmas you can guarantee one will be forecast so Christmas hotel bookings aren't cancelled"
....I hope that they're wrong and Chamonix Meteo is right, but I suspect the truth will be nearer the lower levels.

Whitters - I must admit I don't know what to expect from this one, but it has the look of a significant snowfall from what I can tell by looking at the charts (rather than the computer modelled precipitation amounts) - depending of course on whether the snow/rain limits don't go higher.
Chamonix-meteo are a highly respected set up and their forecasts are excellent.
Its going to be very interesting to revisit all this on Friday.

As a footnote to my post above - it should be noted that all the amounts in the forecast round up were computer generated - except the Chamonix-meteo one - which is written by real people. That could prove to be very important in this case.

Chatel Snow, they were saying it half-jokingly, and I generally find Chamonix Meteo to be amongst the most accurate forecasts, at least for a day or two in advance anyway

Whitters - lets hope they are right on this one !!!

Snowisgood, have you checked the opening dates? Our area is closed - and would be, even if it was all covered with metres of snow. Opens tomorrow. Some resorts not opening till Friday or Saturday.

Les Gets and Morzine were always scheduled to open on Saturday this weekend - I think if there had been a big snowfall they might have opened a couple of lifts at weekends - my OH was once here around 15th November and able to ski that weekend. In Les Gets the big mounds of made snow have now been shifted and hopefully moved round the mountain.

Just back from Pre La Joux - dumping above 1600m - looking like man vs machine forecasting battle may go the way of man!!!
Will update this afternoon as that rain/snow limit is going to fluctuate.

dennisp, Oi, don't send them all to our bit of snow!
sarah, Top tip if it is raining in the village. Park at Linga and ascend by gondola. You will stay dry and then be in the glorious fresh snow on the top half of Linga and the bit down to Plaine Dranse! If you are still getting wet on the top half of Linga it is officially a disaster.
On the road tomorrow morning, on the slopes Saturday.

I had a quick ski down to the bottom of proclou this afternoon after mostly skiing chatel and it didn't look like there was enough snow for super Morzine to open yet. Maybe overnight it will be ok as the snow line drops. Or they'll work their usual magic. But it was sort of raining / sleeting at the proclou lift about 4pm.!

DJL, we always just drive straight up to PLJ but will bear than in mind. Would make no odds to start at Linga and ski in to PLJ. Our chalet this time is between Linga and PLJ anyway, I think we might even be able to nip on the bus or even ski almost back (well if there is a bit more snow that is!)

Not much change so far this eve in Chatel - still mostly rain below about 1600m - snow above. Snow limit expected to lower tonight- but to what level is the question!! Temperature on our balcony is edging down very slowly - so hoping for some flakes before midnight at 1200m!

If Pleney/Nyon doesn't open I suspect there will be limited runs open in Les Gets too. Most of the other local lower lying resorts (Les Brasses, Praz de Lys, Thollon etc) will also stay closed or have limited runs open. Stand by for carnage at the Ardent lift in the mornings.
Good luck!
