Any website that is claiming the northern alps are solely in France is completely wrong. Just look at a map (and my post above)
I don't think any are claiming that, they are however including PdS as part of the Northern Alps probably similar to what you have explained.

@mheadbee, in locality yes, they are the northern french Alps yes but alas there is no accepted inter-alpine definitions. What @clarky999 posted is a sensible illustration of what has been the generally accepted definition on this thread for some years now.
Based on Bergfex atm a few white roofs may be the extent of this one for you.

Perhaps they are just referring to northern parts of the French Alps. Suprised at On The Snow - they need a geography lesson about which way is north - as someone said north of the main alpine ridge makes sense. The French site is likely to be Francocentric.
I'm off to Ischgl - pretty sure that would be defined as North (and a touch to the east of centre) - not that much to the north of there.

Certainly looks like it, I am more interested in the 11th as that is probably the last hope before I go.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks for posting the link to the site - it is a serious work killer........fantastic
Without consulting anything other than my brain I'm going with the resorts closest to GVA being the NW Alps?

Very perceptive.
Now when people talk about snow hitting the northern alps do you exclude the NW, that is the question.

For the N and S divide I would take Swiss-Italian border - it is ussualy also a geogrpaphical/topographical border with highest mountains accross that border (natural border). The E and W divide - you can draw as many lines as you like, but CH east border is a rough mark as well.

am supposed to be landing in geneva next thurs (8 days from now) for a weekend (2 day ski) was originally going to go to verbier, but am wondering whether we should push the trip back a month as there's no where within easy reach with any decent snow is there?

@MattHugo81 on a problematic winter so far for long term forecasts.

Long term forecasts usually do poorly in poor snow seasons or sections of poor snow.
@ajc2260626, Pretty good piste skiing in Verbier with 4 Vallees links open. No itineraries open, but more than enough for two days.

@harrymac, 3B Meteo, the site favoured by many Italian resorts has non stop snow from the 12th to 17th currently. Very much pinch of salt stuff, but something to cling on to. I'm out there the week after, so hoping it's right myself.
Sat in Reno, NV at the mo - so much snow, so much weather, resorts are completely closed or partially closed. Dangerous driving conditions. I wanted snow, but not THIS much

Struggling up from the archives... This from a few years ago. Click on the HISTALP link. It's the northern side and southern side that is the important part.

@Gaza, and here's some more from the archives... The HISTALP link is good for north versus south.

mheadbee, the Portes du Soleil are in the north and the west.
See this from last year. Linking to the year before. Few of the resorts have crossed from one side of the Alps to the other in the intervening period.

HISTALP has a useful map, but I tend to think of the Eastern Alps as roughly east of a line between Lake Constance (Bodensee) and Lake Como (so further west than it appears on the HISTALP map).

@ajc2260626, If you're looking to go off piste at all I would definitely push it back. On-piste you'll probably be OK.

Right. Short term after tonight and tomorrow's storms and snowfall there looks like being a series of bands of snow arriving primarily on the northern side of the Alps and some cold temperatures.
- 08/09 mainly the eastern end
- 10/11 across the whole northern Alps
- 12 mainly the eastern end
- 13/14 pretty much the whole of the Alps
- 15 across the northern Alps
Not a bad outlook for many, obviously subject to change...

Anyone in France able to report fresh snowfall this evening?
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
EC 8-9 January, some decent snow showers for Northern Alps.
EC 11 January, snow showers about much of the Alps and some decent snow for the Pyrenees.
EC 13-15 January, heavy snow showers for Northern Alps
EPS Control 16 January, snow for Northern Alps.
Reliability not so great beyond 10th Jan. Jetstream looks better after each snow event. Europe hopefully will be coming into better times with chart stability increasing.
Do you guys have a Weather links thread? Cause I am happy to dump a whole lot of websites for you guys

@harrymac, it's on the southern side of the Alps to the west. Snowfall currently looks stronger to the northern side of the Alps.

Here's SLF's update for Switzerland and an extract from their weather outlook.
In northern regions, skies will be heavily overcast, accompanied by snowfall down to low lying areas. In western regions, the precipitation will slacken off during the course of the day. In eastern regions precipitation will continue until evening and in some places heavy snowfall is anticipated. In southern regions it will be sunny, accompanied by northerly winds.
Fresh snow
Above approximately 1000 m, the following amounts of fresh fallen snow are expected:
- northern Alpine Ridge from the Wildstrubel into the Glarner Alps, Gotthard region, northern and central Grisons, northern Engadine: 20 to 40 cm;
- remaining regions of Switzerland: 10 to 20 cm widespread;
- in the furthermost southern regions, less or else it will remain dry.
Temperature
At midday at 2000 m, -12 °C.
Wind
Winds will be strong to stormy from the north.
Outlook through Saturday, 7.1.2017
On Thursday night in northeastern regions a small amount of additional snowfall is expected. During the daytime on Friday it will be sunny in the mountains. On Saturday, cloud cover will rapidly move in from the northwest and during the afternoon there could be a small amount of snowfall in northern regions. In southern regions it will be sunny. On both days, a strong northerly wind will be blowing.
The avalanche danger is not expected to change significantly. In the major areas of precipitation the situation is expected to remain tense."

@harrymac, as the systems currently forecast are coming from the north most of the snow will fall on the northern side of the Alps. However some is likely to spill across. Based on current output I'd possibly be a little more conservative than @Jellybeans1000.
