Yr.No showing a decent amount for Verbier through the middle of next week and the following. Too far out to be a solid sure bet , but as I am in Risoul from 7/1 with zero forcast I am thinking of options.
Would it be completely mental to fly in to Turin ( we are on a package ) then hire a car and drive to Austria or Slovenia?
I dont want sunshine , I want January in the Alps with blustery wind , low cloud , snow , flat light, low temps and powder being blown into knee deep staches I can hunt out in the slack country.

@davidof, 89-90 was the worst I recall. Portes du Soleil got down to 6 open pistes. Drought broke iirc as you said end Feb.
Yes 89-90.
and at that time massively less artificial snow making (if any) so if it didn't snow the resorts were screwed?
If Luchon-Superbagnères in the Pyrenees didn't have snowmaking they wouldn't have opened a single piste.
You are totally correct, this is my local resort and like the beginning of last season we were totally dependant on snow making. However we have been here since 2004 and until last year we had never lost a days skiing because of no snow, in fact the opposite was more true where we had to close the resort due to the severe risk of avalanches. The start of last year and of course this year have been almost catastrophic for the resort, however we are lucky in that we have another ski resort (Peyragudes) close by where all the skiing is above 1600m and a big portion above 2000m which compliments Superbagneres where the conditions are not great.
Just back from skiing with guests at Baqueira, not too bad at all however there are lots of stones showing through in certain places, and had it not been for snow making there would be no return runs.
No real change on the cards for at least 10 days, though at least it is cold enough to run the cannons.
@dupes, only cold and more of the bloody sunshine is forecasted for Slovenia

some GoogleFoo has discovered driving a hire car inter - country can be problematic
It has also uncovered some eye-wateringly cheap prices for CC in Austria for the week
The price of car hire + waivers + fuel + accom is double what an all in deal would cost outright
And I have already paid for one holiday but as the snow is so bad I am considering another
Having been spoilt by 4 days of powder in Via Lattea last year where I skied myself to a standstill each day I want more of the same

My first time skiing Europe was the '89/'90 year. I was in the Arlberg over Christmas that year in Fiss. Was not used to such small amounts of snow in late December having grown up in Utah and Alaska where the norm was a few meters base by Xmas. But I also went to Chamonix and was in Avoriaz that year (1990)in February and had some really good powder days.
The season in Europe reminds me of what the West Coast USA went through 3 seasons ago with a blocking high set up several hundred miles off the coast, and just wouldn't let anything through. Even late in the season when something got through it was too warm, or it was just a weak front that dropped a few measly centimeters. It turned out to be a very bad season with most resorts in Tahoe and Oregon, Washington reporting the worst snowfall records since records have been kept.
Hopefully that doesn't happen for the ski resorts in Europe this season. Only time will tell.
Meanwhile, over on my side of the pond there are a series of storms coming in down in Cali that will drop some fairly high amounts of snow in Tahoe and Mammoth. Those storms will also make there way over to Utah and Colorado. Quite a bit of moisture is loaded in these storms coming off the Pacific. Could be up to two meters on the high end over the next 7 days. Cold air is circulating down out of the Gulf of Alaska that will keep snow levels fairly low. But will be a bit of a up and down on the snow levels as cold and warm air mixes as the storms come in. It's one thing that makes forecasting snow fall amounts a tricky business.
PNW just had a storm come through that weather forecasters were calling "weak". Snowfall amounts were "trace amounts" to a few inches with the possibility that maybe 8" in the North Cascades at Mt. Baker might fall. Even the day of the storm, the weather forecast called for clearing and blue skies. The blue skies were never seen as it just dumped the entire day, and into the evening. Turned out after all was said and done that most ski areas in the PNW had 13" to a staggering 39" in a 24 hour period for little Mission Ridge in the Eastern Cascades. Just looking at Mt Rainier today and it is covered in a blanket of clouds and webcams still showing snow showers.
Weather has a mind of its own. And when it is mountain weather, it does some funky things that sometimes are unpredicted.

Here's how WRF sees the midweek snowfall stacking up. Primarily the northern side of the Alps and the eastern end, but some sizeable falls.

Austria maybe worthwhile but Slovenia has very little natural snow - been watching the webcams as I'm there on 19th Jan. What is open is on cannon snow pistes., like a lot of Austria too, but forecast for Austria looks better / more snow for next couple of days.

Here's how 18z GFS sees it out to Monday.
Similar pattern those figures, which obviously include the weekend unlike WRF, still look a little high for Austria, but significant snowfall certainly looks likely.

30-50cm for Austria and Eastern Switzerland, if you don't want to convert

Snowing lightly at the moment and looks like snow on and off for the next couple of weeks.

Buy a 3rd party waiver. I've just bought an annual one for £39 to cover 2 separate rental weeks in Austria.

TWO metres of snow forecast (Ok, it's just someone guessing a bit) for Ischgl for the next 9 days!
This includes 1.2m next Tues/Weds - I hope that this is wrong - I want to be able to ski!!

@buchanan101, sounds like you are looking at snowforecast.com? That will have been based on the 00z GFS op run which was a significant outlier against it's ensembles at that point (10/11 Jan).
Still in the coming week Austria does look like getting significant snowfall on the northern side of the Alps.

How did you guess? Phew... Bergfex a little more conservative (though still 0.7m in those two days). Still a foot of snow in 24 hours is still hard going for ON-pisters like me who just like sunshine!
Tomorrow looks good for Austria on both engines.

Worth adding that 06z GFS continues to see snow for the following week, though with a clear bias for now towards the eastern side of the northern Alps.

We need as much snow as possible across Europe - I know it makes piste conditions more difficult but considering most resorts look like golf courses we should take the hit for the greater good!

Obergurgl fairly central, touch to the east, touch to the north (if that given it is on the Italian border).
Plenty forecast for tomorrow, and - in theory - next week. Bit short at the moment - snow level is about 2000m so the run to Untergurgl is a white path on green, but it will be fine due to height and direction. Going there in March

Depends where; I think most of Austria should be reasonably placed by the weekend if it falls tomorrow and Thursday as forecast, especially given the quality/extent of snowmaking there for the base.
At least Saturday looks reasonably clear there for my drive from Innsbruck airport!

yup - Bergfex is showing this - hardly anything for West Austria next week (I'd be able to see where I am going!). I'm sure it will all change back sometime over the next few days...

Heading to Montgenevre at the end of Jan. I hear they have a good amount for piste skiing there already, although a top up in the next few weeks would be lovely!

Snowforecast has some pretty psychedelic colours in their 6-9 day map. I realise this getting into FI territory but is there support for this on EC?

@mheadbee,

I could probably live with that. This is the lads 3 day trip so as long as there are some decent pistes we will be happy. If it transpired that Morzine was a golf course and only a few open in Avoriaz which were sheet ice I think we would be disappointed.
