Chris Brookes, not really so helpful, so are you saying that you can't assist me in this one? Don't tell me that I have beaten the combined brains of the Jungfrau thread

Ray Zorro,
Engelberg.... easier by train from Basel or Zurich, or rather, only the one change, not that train swapping is much of a hardship in switzerland, they time the trains to coincide effectivley

Ray Zorro, you are asking the impossible,no one can predict if the week you are wanting to go will have good snow ..
My suggestion is...........................................back in a second need another beer

Chris Brookes, I know that no-one can predict the future, I was just wondering how much was skiable that corresponding week in the past. IncogSkiSno found out for me from SCGB that the 12 year average at Murren is 68 upper 22 lower for that week, but I thought that you Jungfrau experts may know a little more detail than that.

Ray Zorro, im back !!
That 12 year average doesnt include the snow depth produced by the snow cannons that now cover both runs back to the resort and the higher slopes. In Murren there is 3 places in the village where they measure the snow depth for the lower measurement. That measurement is only the actual snow fall instead of the depth of snow on the slopes. In previous years one of the two resort runs was always closed due to not enough snow at the beginning of the season but now that has changed.
I would go with the facts which are that both resorts will near enough have the same amount of snow at base level for that time of year so i would decide on which resort has more to offer !

I am considering options for next season and am wondering about an early trip to the area. What have people's past experiences been like for the week before Christmas - i.e. 16th to 23 December? |
Hi Ray, we always go 10 days before Xmas or so. It's a really nice time to be in the village. Can't remember not being able to ski, but you might not be able to get back to the village. Still, we'll be there as usual next season on the 16th, looking forward to the opening party at the Tanne etc. Just do it

Well in what 30+ years of going to Wengen I can recall 3 bad years when it was not possible to ski pre Christmas so I guess that's a 10% chance, but since then a considerable amount of snow machines have been added, these days I'd say that there's probably a 5% chance of being unable to ski in the area pre Christmas but probabaly a 10% chance of being unable to ski to the villages of Wengen or Murruen 20% chance of not being able to ski to Grindelwald as it doesn't have so many snow cannon at low levels, I once used to say that you needed a minimum of 30cm in Wengen and 70cm on the upper slopes but given recent improvements I'm going to reduce that to 20cm in Wengen and 65cm on the upper slopes, it's important to bear in mind that Wengen iis mainly skiing on alpine meadows so does not need much snow, on the other hand to ski down from Piz Gloria at Murren I think you need a minimum 100cm of snow because it's very rocky at the top. Even with these amounts of snow you can still get poor skiing as the wind can strip off snow from the slopes making certain areas unskiable

Chris Brookes, It would be Lauterbrunnen. Thanks again for your helpful reply to my pm.
Thanks telford_mike, D G Orf, That is really helpful - and good news too. I think I may well go for it then .

Ray Zorro, Ray,i have posted pictures of Murren (click on 'my photo gallery')slopes in the summer. You can see what i was saying in the pm that the lower slopes are alpine meadows compared to the higher slopes Birg/Schilthorn are being of rock (as per what D G Orf is saying) and thats why they open the lower runs first.

Amazingly it's still possible to ski back to Wengen at the moment, though Innerwengen is out, still plenty of snow on the higher slopes

Ronald, Going up the Mannlichen is easy as there's a proper road going all the way to the top from Grund, there's even a car park just below the upper Gondola station, more of a challenge would be to go up to kleine schidegg and down the other side, the Wengen side is mainly stone covered track the Grindelwald side is a mixture of stone track and proper tarmac, not sure what the track to Murren is like but I imagine with the construction of the new cable car from Lauterbrunnen this summer that it will be busy

Lauterbrunnen to Wengen no problem, the path starts across the river from the station, go up the left path though as the right path comes up below the Alpenrose and has some very narrow hairpin bends that can't be cycled, the left path comes up near the village center and is somewhat easier, the path itself is pretty steep in places, from Wengen to Mannlichen direct on a bike is not possible, narrow footpath only, however it might be possible to cycle from Wengen up to the Mannlichen by going via Kleine Scheidegg the round trip from Lauterbrunnen back to Lauterbrunnen must be arround 40+km
Path via Winteregg is possible I've just never walked up or down it in the summer so I'm not sure what it's made of

Just received the Jungfrau newsletter and it states 'On Schilthorn, a modern quad chairlift makes a new link from close to the Muttleren bottom station to Birg (intermediate station of aerial cableway), replacing the steep Engetal ski lift.
Now thats a suprise having it starting close to the bottom of the Muttleren station !

Good grief how are they holding it up ? Sky hooks ? Bottom of Muttleren to Birg in a straight line would be over a very long drop

|

Maybe they are staying it inwards and then going upwards to Birg..

Elizabeth B, More importantantly, the rope is not the worst thing. Coming from the Schilthornhut (the thing at the top op muttleren/kandahad) I don't make it to the tow without poling, and i dislike poling (juuuust a little;)
Great addition to move the Engetal down to the Muttleren!

Chris Brookes, Yes it takes a while, but I do keep the promise!!
I'm uploading the series I shot at the Funicular...
Everything was taken with an ultrawide angle lens. (Canon EF-S 10-22, for those who know what that is) so perspective can be very very wild.
Have fun at http://photo.hummelink.net/?album=2
Loading may be slow if a photo hasn't been viewed yet. They are resized on the fly and then cached, hosted on a DSL line.
Also, bugs in the gallery, please report. Its my own written thing.....

A new chairlift will make a big difference at Honegg as lots of people miss out on the nice runs down as they do not like T-bars.
