I have been hesitating to add Wengen to this list, but that was my greatest disappointment. Of course, being objective this was a Christmas visit and the snow was thinly spread and icy. I found the trains irritating rather than charming and the skiing limited. Wengen is cold and dark at Christmas and that didn't help. I think this suggests that snow conditions are all-important, but I guess we knew that.

I don't understand people who moan about skiing pistes more than once, they get better as you get to know them better. Equally you all need to stop being so bloody terrified of anything ungroomed - it's not all dangerous and scary, it is all more fun. |
This. I've never understood the mentality which wants only perfectly manicured groomers, then wants a giant ski area because its boring skiing the same groomer more than once! IMO if you think like that, grasp the thistle (possibly literally), and you'll get a lot more out of your skiing if instead of seeking ever bigger resorts, you instead seek to broaden your horizons and skill sets.
A couple of posts have commented that there's not much difference cost wise between a week in Scotland vs a week in France, so why would anyone choose to travel to Scotland for a holiday. It does of course depend what your looking for from a holiday and even I'll admit to being somewhat surprised last half term to have spoken to as many families as I did on holiday in Strathspey, whom a good proportion were not just planning to return in 2013, but had already booked up. Particularly for families or groups where perhaps not everyone is as a committed skier as some, a recurring theme was the amount of alternative things to do and a sense overall of far greater value for money.
I spoke several different family groups who used to make a half term pilgrimage to France, but were now repeat visitors to Scotland, they made the specific point that they were renting a large excellently equipped house for less than a tiny place in France.
Not everyone has the same needs, wishes or requirements - makes a thread like this as to some extent eventually everywhere would be listed.

Les Deux Alps
Fainted in the ice sculpture caves on the glacier. Reverse of all other resorts with the easy runs being high up at the top, and the hard ones lower down.
Bit of a schlep getting from one 'alp' across to the other .
Queues for the gondola down at the end of the day , and no gluvine on offer like they do in Avoriaz

Les Deux Alpes seems to be coming up a lot! I have to agree, the only times I've been skiing in France were there and Alpe D'Huex, both at Xmas. There was plenty of snow both times but an unbelievable amount of closed pistes and lifts. I remember someone saying that they might be trying to keep everything nice and fresh for new year week, which is a bit hard to take if you've just forked out for a lift pass!

Val d'Isere .......... over rated............. Over-priced .......... I Ya ne sprashavayu po Ruskii.
Sadly the ICONIC ski resort has to accept that it has evolved into a money-making-conglomerate.
Such a pity....................... there's truly world-class skiing,but that attracts world-class prices.
............... go to Austria.......................

Borovets - never again...on the door into the Rila hotel, you hve your usual signage for no dogs, no ski boots, etc - plus one that implies no guns.....
Poor quality snow (went twice, second time it had dumped down the week before and it still wasn't great on some of the slopes), tatty looking resort full of knock-off gear. I founf the food in the hotel and the restaurants in the resort centre okay, but rubbish and shockingly bad value on the mountain.
Sorry Borovets...

We've had a great time every time we've been away, so I don't think I could say that I wouldn't go back anywhere.
However, I do tend to agree with the comments about L2A. We like to ski over to other villages as if we're exploring, which isn't possible at L2A.
Interesting people mentioning AdH. I'm on my way back for a 4th trip next summer - 3 summer hols, 1 ski hol. That said we've only stayed in the town itself once but AdH has featured as the centre for the holiday each time.

I think you have to have a certain amount of experience/ability, have a guide and/or have the right amount of equipment to ski La Grave. None of which we possess(ed). That and the link wasn't open when we were there (which I know is like saying the conditions were crap so you wouldn't go back).

marmotte16, *yawns*............... point missed you the.
My point still stands, it's a real shame that Val d'Isere has gone money-stupid. Some superb skiing spoilt by indifferent French, overpriced resort/on-the-mountain prices, herds of saissonaires, and massive peak-time queues on main uplifts. As regards value,.......... it lost that decades ago.
Don't you just love the French?

Fair point, the nice middle class ,quiet, self effacing, modest with their wealth Russians are ok. The chain smoking, whoring, boorish, drunk Russians are a PITA.
Anyway there isn't anywhere to ski that basically isn't full of dirty foreigns, especially Jockoland. Meribel possibly.

I knew there had to be a worst place thread ... and the weather is important.
I've enjoyed just about every place I've been
although I've not been to
Les 2 Alpes or Borovets
Even spent a week on the Feldberg in the Black Forrest which seemed fine to me then.
I must admit the worst place I went was to Aviemore in 1976.
I thought it was a ski resort.
When I got there I found out it is only occasionally a ski resort.
The weather was foul and windy and after a couple of days they opened a T-bar so they could sell day tickets for 200 metres of whiteish rocks. Only the top section of the lift was open and the queue took about an hour. I got a rollicking from the Jock Rock Patrol for joining the lift while it was stationary between snagging the people.
I camped in my VWbus with a paraffin heater and my girlfriend to keep me warm.
I could not believe it! The camp-site was full of hairy jocks who hung around the toilets as the tents were under 6" of snow.
We moved the van down to the Cannons hotel and parked between a couple of Rollers.
The break took a turn for the better as we could use the warm water of the hotel and gate crash the New Years Eve party.
But I don't think I'll ever go back to ski it.

roga,
I don't think it was that trip that coloured my view ... the place was mostly English people like me who "didni ken better" the wise jocks were in their but n'bens havin a wee dram while
us "Green Card carrying Sasarnach" were out on the moors like lost frozen sheep.
I've heard it can be wonderful in April .... But I'm not falling for that one!

I wonder, thinking about the comments from under a new name, whether there is an inverse relationship between the skill and experience of the skier and the likelihood of their complaining of resorts being unchallenging and boring. We had friends come to our place, who really, genuinely, are pretty poor skiers though they've skied for many a long year (without improving because they won't take lessons). I skied with them for 5 of their 6 days, in Les Saisies, Les Contamines, and Areches Beaufort. They didn't ski any black runs, and they skied most of the reds they did very badly. I am by no means an expert skier, and certainly not in the same league as under a new name, but I do ski a lot better than my visitors. I was really irritated at the end of the week when they said the skiing was not sufficiently challenging. I genuinely wonder whether they realised how very badly they skied some of those runs, and how they'd have skied the difficult runs even worse. And that's without even thinking about the off piste. Areches has top class off piste. Not that I have the skills and experience to tackle it - but I do know enough not to moan about the "lack of challenge" when I'm not up to trying it!

^ or maybe some people are actually fairly decent piste skiers and enjoy experiencing lots of different pistes from blues to blacks, rather than skiing the same few runs each day.
Of course, skiing is a sport where many people tend to overrate themselves in the pub.

I guess there is a difference between resorts that you as an individual would choose not to go back to out of the thousands resorts on offer and resorts that are terminally useless.
Plenty of space for personal prejudice etc.
For me I have enjoyed pretty much every ski holiday I have been on, however there are probably a few resorts I do not intend returning to .
Top of the list is Meribel yes it has perfectly good skiing and I am not critical of anyone choosing to go there many friends return but for me
1) It is horribly English, I don't dislike England or the English but when abroad I do like to feel I am in the country I am visiting, Meribel does not do it for me.
2) The scenery in the 3v as a whole is dull, the alps are attractive but they certainly reserve the dullest bit for this area.
3) Meribel is eye wateringly expensive, eating is expensive drinking is expensive hiring skis is expensive.
4) It completely and utterly lacks charm. It is not traditional nor is it modern it is just inconvenient as a layout and as charmless as Cumbernauld.
5) The slopes around Meribel are a bit dull and face the wrong way, Courchevel and Les Menuires/ Val Thorens have soem decent skiing nearby Meribel you have to travel to get to it nothing wrong with travelling to get to skiing but the point of modern French resorts is that you don't have to in Meribel you do.
Yes I know lots of people love the place and if I was offered a free holiday there I am sure I would enjoy it but I am sure as hell not going to part with a disproportionate amount of my hard earned to go back.

pam w, 26 thousand 3 hundred and fifty seven posts......................... not that you have the experience nor the skills, but certainly the time to waste on a dozen posts almost every day for the past 8 years.
Seems like the Russians have passed by the delights of Le Beaufortain/Areches and the lack of sufficiently challenging terrain. More to their loss.
What I find lovely is your self aggrandissement and self deprecating comments within a single sentence.
