Thanks both of you....will have a look now. I don't think my parents will be up for anything involving a chair lift as they will have our (just) 2 year old with them and they will be worried bout him falling out but who knows: they may be persuadable! Xxx

Cumulus,
Thanks for posting that We're off to VT on 22nd and wifey can't ski this time. Looks like we'll be able to all pop over to Meribel together for lunch one day after all.

Not sure that will be as easy from VT as it is from St Martin

Was thinking of bus down to Les Menuires then lifts to Meribel-Mottaret. Would that work?
|
|
|
|
|
|
sequoiaboard, Looks like that would get you to Mottaret via the PLattieres gondola. To get to Méribel from there, options are free bus, or up the Saulire on Pas du Lac, walk about 200m to the new Saulire lift station, then take the Saulire gondola down into Méribel

I need to get out there NOW! We'll be there at beginning of March (group of 8 friends) and have a week with my family in Villard-de-Lans in Feb, on our first family trip.
Really hope there's good skiing in the Grampians over Christmas to keep me going. 2 1/2 months until 3V is far too long!
Currently hoovering up info, so the tip about le Rastro is a good one, thanks!

Waaah. Can someone reassure me that the forecast heavy weekend rain at lower elevations isn't going to wash all the lovely snow away???

This is "official" reassurance - it's not likely to warm up that much, looking at the wigglies

Turned in to a rather lovely day. Flat light at the beginning of the morning turned to hazy sunshine from mid-morning on most slopes (think it stayed cloudy at the top end of VT). Pistes above Les Menuires and above Mottaret were deserted. Felt like we had a private piste and a private chairlift when we were lapping around Grand Lac. The runs down to Meribel from La Chambre (Venturon, Bouvreil, Sittelle & Marte) were empty and as well prepared as I can remember skiing on. Perfect groomer skiing, just right for confidence building coaching. Followed up by a very tasty, but unnecessarily large Carbonara in La Rastro for a very good value €10. Might have some photos later.
Forecast is for a warm spike tomorrow, followed by yet more heavy snow as we go in to the weekend.

Lapping Grand Lac in perfect conditions sounds just fine to me, and a good value resto at the bottom to! Freezing fog here all day, bloody miserable out of my office window.

Love carbonara there. I assume it's still a proper one with the egg yolk in the half a shell in the middle and not some health and safety mandated 'we have to mix it in' one.

ansta1, no, French style, with cream but no egg yolk served in the shell. I prefer Italian style (just egg), but didn't get that today. It was a big portion, so glad I'm not skiing this afternoon!

rob@rar, I'm sure the last time I had one in Meribel it came with the egg yolk in the shell, though that was in 2004 IIRC....

Thanks Patch. Been reading the forums for a couple of weeks now and already took some good advice from here. Was in 3V this time last year with too much snow as I recall. They were constantly blasting, with not much open as they were struggling to keep on top of it. Even affected the Ladies Giant Slalom.

Team in La Tania report fabulous conditions and blue skies. They, however, are too busy prepping for tomorrow's arrival of first guests of the season, to take advantage.

Spent a v happy hour or so lapping up grippy piste and puffy powder off the Tougnette 2 lift in Meribel. As Rob reported, extraordinarily quiet. Lots of fun off the Chenus gondola too...
Lot less lifts open than equiv week in 2010, but who can blame the lift co and remains v good deal (provided one gets blessed w this kind of white powder). Next week will see pretty much all open so fresh tracks still there awaiting yr attention!!

Yes, but a lot more open than the same week in 2011, when Méribel and Courch hadn't even opened yet

Pedantica, sorry to be a total and utter poo-poo, but that beef stew (menu said something like Jarvan of Boef) was just the best such food I have ever eaten. It was made additionally tasty by fact there were only 2 portions left, one of which I greedily nabbed. Wished you were there, you'd have wept with joy.
There is a bloody big 'however' on all of this, though. Which is I am going to have to put up with you lucky Arabba lot swooning over pasta, cured meats, fine wines and all that come February
Rob - any idea where your posse are going to be tomorrow?
