Zero-G, sounds good. (Of all the places I've ever skied, Chamonix is the one that's fulfilled the local forecasts most often.)

laundryman, do you have a link to the best megeve webcams? We are off to Megeve in 3 and a bit weeks time and I'm beginning to wonder if I might be wise taking my mountain bike with me! I always new it would be a risk but at the moment I would imagine it's not looking too good for there being a lot open? Luckily we have a week in the southern alps the following week.

Hurtle, laundryman, I'll take whatever I can get. Not too worried about the rain/snow height, I'll be going higher than that.
Now, I wonder when the neighbours will start to miss their poodle...

Thank you for the link, it's not looking great! Could be driving to higher resorts if it stays like that.

philipb, yep, reckon I'll spend sometime at Les Contamines next week. Maybe even Courmayeur.
Edit: I don't know why the tourist board don't have webcams at Côte 2000, which always holds snow better than anywhere else in Megève.

Well it's forecast for a dump tonight 15cm or so according to snowforecast. Thinking of heading over to Les Contamines as have heard that there are some great runs and it is less susceptable to slippage, anyone got any views? Never been there before.

I can report that Les Contamines today was epic, not very steep but lots of pow and decent enough vis in the trees. Avoided the cat track down after seeing that pic. The poor vis meant that there will be plenty of good lines left tomorrow.

I somehow ended up in Gressoney. In a bar. At 2am. In my ski pants.
Cham looked pretty ordinary this morning.

Hahaha! Good work.
I loved reading your blogs by the way, wish I could ski like that.
I did the Vallee Blanche a few years ago and it was beautiful but I took a very easy route! The scariest bit was the leap of faith to the bottom of the steps at the end, above the ice cave.

Heading to Chamonix for the first time on April 10th. Checking the snow reports like a mad woman. Already had a holiday this year in Val Thorens with no fresh snow at all, would like at least one day this year!

Karis., hmmm, well, I was sitting on my balcony this arvo, wearing shorts and flip flops, watching the sun glisten off Mont Blanc. But I've just arrived and haven't checked out the conditions yet - tomorrow will tell.

Hi Snowheads
This saturday will be my premiere trip to Cham... I have room for just 1 pair of skis.
I hear theres not much in the way of snow at the moment. Am I best off with park skis...anyone know what condition the les houches park is in?
Or should I keep the faith and take fast, wide and and impractical?
Ali (currently performin a snow dance in sunny yorkshire!)

Skied Brevent this morning. Coverage was very thin on the fully south-facing slopes. Was waterskiing from about midday. Will see what GM is like tomorrow. (via SMS)

Hot again today. Grands Montets is dust on crust but still skiable. All of Cham is skiing GM today, with snowploughers everywhere (even on Bochard). (via SMS)

we arrive in chamonix friday afternoon for our annual lads ski weekend? We would normally nip up to brevet for a cruise, but what's recommended this year? Straight to the grand montets? What are current conditions like? Thanks

mr ted, GM today had a decent bit of fresh, say 20cm over the last 48hrs. Conditions up top were nice but snow spoiled below about 2300. Be v careful with any glacial stuff, snow bridges are weak, this i can state from very first hand experience.
Nipping to Italy tomoz, will report back on conditions there.

Update on conditions:
On this trip (I've been here for almost 3 weeks now), I haven't skied Flégère at all - I was at Grands Montets on my second day and could see across the valley to Flégère and it looked brown and uninviting.
I haven't skied Brévent in over a week because on my last day skiing there it was waterskiing by 11am. The instructor I had yesterday said that there was only one piste open at Brévent on Wednesday, which then closed by lunch time.
The pistes at Grands Montets are looking very thin now, with brown patches showing through. The top part of the Combes is sheet ice (have seen more than a few people walking down the side of that piste with board/skis in hand) and the lower part is sporting a few pebbles. The lower parts of both the Combes and Bochard are slush by about 11.30am. The off-piste sections between the Combes and Bochard are soft enough to ski by about 11am.
The ungroomed runs from the top of the GM cable car consist of rough, chopped-up bumps that have set hard as frikkin concrete first thing in the morning. Have had a few 'spicy' mornings trying to ski that stuff - I would class that as survival skiing.
I'm not sure how much longer we'll all be able to scratch around for the leftovers but yesterday I went to the local bookshop and bought a book on Chamonix hikes and walking trails. I still have three-and-a-half weeks here and while I'm fine to pay for a guide to take me off-piste to find better snow or do some climbing - my budget doesn't stretch to 3 weeks of guiding.
My one guide said that the current weather and snow conditions are akin to mid-May in other years. I now take flip flops in my backpack because keeping ski boots on for even 30 minutes after I've finished skiing is unbearable - especially while waiting in the blazing sun for the bus.

Zero-G, have you done the vallee blanche or is that well and truly done for the season? I am out on the 28th April and thinking hiking boots and golf clubs?

The bottom of the Coup du Monde chairlift in Les Houches provided a pleasant picnic spot today, en route for the tunnel.

We are going to Chamonix on Sunday. Will Brevant/Flegere be open / worth skiing?
Should I bother taking tele gear?
Will we have some maniacial rush up and down the valley to find sodden children in ski school?
Will I be sorry?
Will I be happy?
say Pizza Valerio is open - please.......
If I promise to buy a hybrid car next time will it be colder next year?

That's what I keep telling myself every day. I'm on a few waiting lists to join groups for Vallee Blanche and also for 1-day tours, none of which will materialise unless snow falls and people book these itineraries.

Was looking at the runout on the Mer de Glace through that couloir at the top of GM - I couldn't see any snow at all. I'd say it's more than a bit of a walk
ed123, Brévent and Flégère will not be worth skiing if it's pistes you're after - unless those famed April storms appear (but not likely to happen before your arrival tomorrow).
