I guess everyone's either packed up and is travelling home early because the snow is so bad, is snowed in their hotel with no internet access or revelling in knee deep powder off piste and too busy to respond!
We head out a week on Sunday, so I'm hoping for one of the last two.

- I was thinking the same. I have a web cam in 1650 on a constant refresh - not a cloud in the sky or anyone on the slopes.
We go on Sunday, at least it will be nice and sunny!!

Look at the snowreport tab on www.courchnet.com
They do a nice commentary of real conditions around the mountain which I quite like as it's about real snow, lift and piste conditions (rather than a resort published bulletin) and it's updated 3 times a week with photos. Also the odd bit of restaraunt advice.
They also do a video snow report as does www.latania.co.uk, although personally I prefer to read the written reports and look at the stills.
Latania.co.uk also generally does a quick update on its homepage and facebook page whenever there is any significant new snow or news so it's worth keeping an eye on it.

Very variable amounts of fresh... very little (none) low down, buy all accounts not much in Courchevel (a few cms here 7 there), up to 10cms up above Mottaret/Menuires, the Jackpot today was off La Masse down the Encombres valley, with 10-15cm of fluffy fresh on a predictable base (more than can be said for a lot of this week) all the way down to Caseblanche. (Pics to follow). All rounded off with a great lunch at the Chantacoucou...
The new snow has made a small difference to the pistes, but not really noticeable.

I am in La Tania this week-end. My impression of the courchevel valley today: hard. A little bit of fresh snow in the afternoon, but only a dusting over very hard and occasionally icy pistes. It still beats working, but i've had a lot better. Try out the rest of the 3v tomorrow. (via SMS)

Today was spent mainly at the top end of meribel. Mont vallon had the best snow we found. Yesterdays sprinkling of new snow helped in the morning, but still very hard underneath, and was soon scraped away. Lots of mounds of man made snow on the piste back to la tania, so i'd guess the locals dont expect any new snow soon. (via SMS)

Thanks to Offpisteskiing we tried Masse today, and stayed there all day. Best day so far. Pistes so-so, but in between lots of fun and not too much crud. In summary, more snow needed, but still fun to be had if you look for it. And if you're looking for it head high, and for the right of the piste map. (via SMS)

Cold & clear again today... no skiing to report - spent a 'fun' 5 hours injecting water into the Meribel stade ahead of Europa cup races over the next few days. Oh the joys...

The ridge narrows but was well tracked

I much preferred to unclick and boot up that pitch. Sidestepping seemed slower and less secure to me. On my MS one of the guys made the navigation mistake of traversing along the lefthand side of that ridge, underneath the little cliff. It got very precarious and we had to abort the route and drop down from the ridge towards the Courchevel side. Wasn't my most enjoyable morning on skis.

skimottaret, that's a very interesting write up, skimottaret, thanks for the link. Good to hear about the wobbly bits too - sometimes accounts of those sort of trips are just so macho!

Overall in the Three Valleys, more snow would be welcome, but situation is certainly not "desperate". Most pistes are open and in reasonable condition. Some pistes that suffer from rocks and stones, such as Pic Noir are now closed. A lot of the man-made snow on the lower slopes has been scraped off, so very patchy in places. Yesterday skied La Masse, Meribel, Mottaret, Courcevel 1650 and 1850 and didn't find any particulary bad areas. Obviously better snow is higher, but even most of the lower runs are in reasonable shape.

ok - so from reading the snow reports and the getting the general feeling that spring has arrived early in the Alps. very nervous there won't be any snow left for us when we hit Meribel. It will be our 1st time ever in the 3V and intend to have a go in each of the valleys (ermmm is that possible in a week??!?!?) so need as much resassurance as poss.
Have other snowheads been to Meribel that late in the season and still been able to get some decent days in skiing??? I know the EoSB will be happening the week afterwards not too far away but still got wibbly wobbly knees just thinking about it!!!!!
P.S. 11 weeks and four days and counting!!! yippeeeeeeee!!

The Col de Fruit is one of my favourite runs in the 3V and really not that hard or dangerous - the photos above IMHO shorten and steepen the appearance of the ridge part. It's probably no harder or more dangerous than the traverse along the ridge to the Grand Couloir at Saulire, and the payoff in terms of the long wide slope down under the cliffs, then a fun section into the XC track to Mottaret makes it a classic...

Your February trip is far from late in the ski season. After your trip there will still be 11 weeks left of the season in the 3 Valleys and 13 weeks left of the season in Val Thorens!
We have been to Val Thorens for the May Day Bank Holiday weekend for the past 3 years and have had great skiing each time.
You will have a great time, so no need to worry.
I'm sure other s will be along shortly to put your mind at rest....

Bergmeister, So far as I can make out, cavycool isn't going until the last week in April. At the last EoSB at around that time, the skiing in VT was OK, but the link to Meribel was closed.
