andytb, maybe my browser is infected, but in the next tab I see that if u book now, Ryanair can take you from London to Grenoble on the 26th and return you on the 5th, for £30 (didn't check how much it would cost to add skis). Even with the extra two nights at some hotel, it's way cheaper than the train quote. Also, if u prefer 27th-4th, you can do London-Lyon with easyjet - with skis, it comes to £120, or about 85 without.

27th-4th are the only dates I could make. Bearing in mind that to take the train I'd have to go to London first (£70) and stay overnight (hostel x2) the train is an easily beatable quote.
Quite up for a wee road trip, and Amsterdam direct from Edinburgh is £140, so the £70 I'd spend getting the train to London could be spent on petrol for the trip. Lyon to Les Deux Alpes isn't a short hop at the other end! Thanks for having a look though!!

andytb, I'm sure that the flights from Glasgow are not seasonal, also Glasgow/GVA is almost bound tobe regular. Send Ronald a PM though as that might be a goer.

easiski, skyscanner is showing no availability to either Lyon or Grenoble from north of London and the airport websites correlate this.
Can do Liverpool-Geneva for £70 which is a winner so far. Small matter of the 200 miles to resort tho!

andytb,
Masque just PM'ed me and he would only be able to make the 2nd week as well and he may be flying into AMS assuming I can make it.
Since i'd drive past Geneva, and the airport seems to be right next to the highway i could easily pick you up there.
Quite an interesting way of travel that would be
PM me your email?

I'm sure I sent you a similar PM a couple days ago. Maybe it went to the mysterious 'Roland' I was referring to earlier.
I can fly to Amsterdam as well if you like in return for being put up for a night at either end. Assuming your insurance allows, I can split the driving too. What do you reckon the costs will be?

After some further research I've settled that my best plan of action is to fly to Lyon connecting at Stansted which I have now booked. I presume this is the same flight as holidayloverxx so I'll be in touch regarding the van

deliberate1, I really think that if you arrive at 07.00ish, it would be a bit silly to wait at the airport (not the nicest of places) for 8 hours just to come up the mountain with the others. Your original plan of the bus ride would work better I think. If, OTOH you're delayed by 4 or 5 hours for some reason, it might be worthwhile. Needless to say the airport is nowhere near the city! To go to the city and back in the time might not work.

Easyski, sounds sensible. How long a bus ride is it from Lyon to Grenoble and then Grenoble to LDA? D1

deliberate1, From my investigations it looks like this (but others out there will know for sure)
The bus from Lyon airport to Grenoble Gare Routiere starts at 07:30 and takes 1 hour to get to Grenoble. the buses run at half past the hour, so 7:30, 8:30, 9:30 etc. 20 euros per person
The bus from Grenoble Gare Routiere leaves at 14:15 and arrives at LDA at 15:55. can't remember price (15 euro? its further back in the thread maybe)
so you would likely catch the 08:30 from Lyon airport, arrive at 9:30, or maybe 9:30 to arrive at 10:30 but you'd have to hang around Grenoble till 14:15 - long coffee and lunch break?

Holidayloverxx, very kind of you to scope it out for me. I suppose there are worse places to spend a few hours than in Grenoble.
Not packing quite yet (though boards are nicely waxed and sharpened). What is the de rigeur dress for dinner at the hotel and more generally out on the town, if you can offer an opinion.
Cheers, D1.

Masque, I'll keep my fingers crossed.
deliberate1, I'm having trouble with my email at the moment - very casual dress all the time is the thing. I think the bus takes 1.25 - 1.5 hours from Lyon airport to Grenoble. Certainly you could come up with the others, but it seems a bit of a long wait in a not very nice place. Breaking the journey at Grenoble station is OK but again it's not the nicest - there are some nice cafes not far though, but as Mrs deliberate1, is bringing her skis, that would make walking very far a bit more difficult.
andytb, I don't know if you've got the email, but yes, you can come in the van, and dinner is included in the price.

Ronald, keep your fingers crossed everyone's parents stay well is a good start... Rick helps to look after his...
I think we should all try to send easiski, lots of summer business as well.... I'm sure she would make more in the UK for some summers....must be a touch and go decision to hang around for unknown summer work or go back for definite known income (and to see her family). I was always very glad she likes teaching skiing enough to be there for my summer jaunts!
I think people forget sometimes how much a labour of love instructing can be. Most instructors don't drive Ferraris for some strange reason
