kerekip, Zubringer does pretty much mean 'feeder' in this context. i.e. those main lifts are open to feed people up to the top where there is a bit of skiing.

Deliaskis, thank you very much.
Welcome to snowHeads Steezy!
The local (Austrian) met office says that rain expected on Saturday and Sunday morning.
Temps cool down by Sunday evening and the freezing level goes down to 500-800 m.
Rain turns into snow, but only a small amount can be expected from Sun night to Mon night.
Now Austria is suffering from the inverted temps. Most of the flat parts are under fog, so they are around zero, but the mountains above the fog level enjoy sunshine and mild (10-15C) temps.

Let me summarize the weather report issued by the Austrian Met Office for this week.
In the lower parts it is still mild and some rain expected. The temps in the mountains fall this week.
It is predicted to be below zero above 2000 meters with little bit of snow.
Heavy snowfalls avoid Austria this week. Since it is cold in the mountains, a resort with excellent snow-making systems seems to be the best choice for this week.
Not the best news before Christmas, but the weathermen can make mistake too

Quick webcam check suggests some snowfalls from yesterday in the Tirol/Ski Amade/Salzburger area:
Saalbach town (1000m) looks nice and white.
St Johann/Ellmau (700->800m) look like the resort may have been just the wrong side of the freezing level.
Up the mountain webcams are looking better.
Forecasts are saying c.10cm for today, FL 800 and falling.
So possibly better news for those heading out?
Can anyone "on the ground" confirm this?

I have just read in the Voralberg News that there is a small chance for white Christmas.
This week seems to be cold, but dry.
Interesting figure for Bregenz, the capitol of Voralberg, 58% of the the Christmas holidays here has not been white since 1946.

soelden.com is reporting around 100km of 150km slopes open. most of the remaining slopes have snow cannons placed on them so should be gaining coverage throughout this week if cold enough.

Tirol, it looks like most of Austria well below zero in the valleys at the moment. Hopefully the snow cannons will be working overtime to get those lower and sheltered pistes covered.
JimiHendrix, looking at the webcams in the Gastein valley, there's been some snow over the weekend but many lift are still closed. I have a contact in Gastein, i'll give him a call and see what the situation is.

The Zillertal Arena is reporting 48km/150km of runs open, and 1m of snow in Gerlos - doesn't sound all that bad...

30% of the lifts were open in Saalbach-Hinterglemm today (Mon). Roughly 5cm of freshies down low. Resort-runs remain closed. Outlook is poor. The 16-day forecast is calling for sun, higher temps and modest rain.

Most pistes in Tirol seem to be very crowded for this period.
Tirol.com reports that hotels are fully booked, but about half of the pistes will be open.
Only Mayrhofen predicts that all of their pistes will be operational.

Just back from ZAS and really tired. Will report more later, but had a brilliant weekend.
(
Conditions - it snowed and was snowing when we left. Don't panic if you are going to Austria (like I was) it's all good.
We didn't ski ZAS at all (very limited skiing available) but spent 2.5 days at the Keitzsteinhorn glacier (Kaprun) and it was so, so crowded it was dangerous (hotel staff claim up to 8,000 punters at weekends- not sure if that's even possible, but it doesn't surprise me if it is accurate). The view of the mountain was like an anthill with worker ants everywhere you looked and I mean everywhere. We were skiing by 915am Saturday and Sunday and didnt get close to skiing a piste that wasnt already butchered by traffic. By midday most pistes were really chopped up, scraped and mogul like (upside, learnt how to deal with lots and lots of short sharp turns between mounds of snow). We gave up at around 2pm as it was too much like hard work.
To come : a rant about boarders by an ex-boarder; my observations of queue jumping/pushing; the best hotel I have EVER stayed in; and how my wife and I got on as third weekers. All rivetting stuff I am sure.
BTW - where should I post such?

Mattmulkeen, honestly you will be fine. I have merely stated the downside.
The real upside- you will be skiing while I am at home, there is good quality snow, I'll be carving turkey and you'll be skiing, there are more and more ski areas opening by the day so the pressure will be taken off places like Kaprun, AND you will be skiing and I won't.
I would rather be going when you are then when I went, to be honest given what I know now.
Bet you a pint on it!

Im off to ZAS on Saturday aswell. Im thinking it may be worth purchasing the Salzburger pass so I can access Saalbach as they seem to have more lifts open at present. After reading your comments on Kaprun it has only confirmed what I was expecting with regards crowds. I have only ever skied Kaprun once before and gave up then (easter bank hol) due to over crowded pistes which were v dangerous. Maybe Saalbach will be quiter... heres hoping!! Or is it just wishful thinking?

Well, the sun is just coming out on the new snow at Saalbach and I can see skiers out there. I can see them skiing down towards the church, and just out of view is the chalet where we will be on Saturday.
Please forgive me for not managing to share the gloom!

Here is a German report with photos on the Zillertal Arena. Good pictures.
Summary:
Snow: 0-20 cm
Good: relative large number of pistes were open, the most challenging pistes were maintained the best, not crowded, no queues
Bad: Krimml is in operation, but the connection to Krimml is closed, pistes to the valley are closed, the piste to the bottom of Königsleiten is in bad shape, too many rocks and pebbles

Just back from long weekend at Hintertux & Mayrhofen. Fuller report tomorrow.
Enjoyed 4 days of great skiing. Up at Hintertux, we got first lines in meter deep powder (main dump was a week old, so it did take a 20 minute hike). Mayrhofen is probably about 50% open, with 3 days of non-stop light snow and aggressive use of snow-cannons. Snow has been right down to Mayrhofen, with the buildings well covered in the higher villages towards Tux.
No real crowds to report. Don't think queued for any lift (other than perhaps first gondola at the weekend at Hintertux).
Whilst both resorts could do with more snow, both are in pretty good shape.

Hi all, the USAFE weather charts show another small snowfall for Aus which all helps
http://ows.public.sembach.af.mil/asp/syn00120_looperb.asp?name=synoptic&loc=GifImages
I'm flying out the Salzburg on Jan 6th so still time for a major dump!
I'm leaving the resort choice till the very last minute between Zauchensee, Saalbach, Flachau, or Obertauen.
do you think these are the best bunch to choose from ?
(I think i will avoid Kaprun as the world and his wife seems to go there when the snow is poor)

For anyone going to Mayrhofen, I think their website is now showing all lifts open (can't be 100% as my german is v. poor). Perhaps someone with a better grasp of the language can confirm -> http://www.mayrhofnerbergbahnen.com/de/100195/100255/schneebericht.html
Ab morgen Donnerstag, sind alle Anlagen der Mayrhofner Bergbahnen in Betrieb. I think this roughly translates to 'from Thursday morning, all Mayrhofen lifts are open'
