Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Was quite impressed by the promptness of service by SCGB membership secretary Smile

Sent an email at the end of lunch break on Friday. (Dormant) account completely wiped from the website by home time.

Maybe if the SCGB's board and executive concentrated on what they're supposed to be doing, rather than getting "shot of" people, the Club would benefit.

This is an updated six-month global ranking comparison between skiclub.co.uk and snowheads.com (by alexa.com).
Starts 28 April, concludes today 28 October.

This proves that the Club's website needs urgent and radical attention. In that period ...
The SCGB's ranking has fallen from 135,070 to 185,015
Snowheads' ranking has increased from 119.103 to 96,647

The Club reported a couple of years ago that it was investing £100,000 annually in its website. To what end? Interesting that a social-media-based site like snowHeads, operating on tiny fractions of budgets like that, delivers what seems to be relevant to British skiers, with significantly higher traffic and usefulness.

The SCGB, in contrast, still seems to be stuck in web 1.0 ... despite the reality that web 2.0 started to go into overdrive 10-15 years ago (reminder: Facebook and snowHeads were born within 24 hours of each other).

not really interesting tbh, if you know how search engine rankings work then it's pretty obvious and to be expected.

Censorship by Ski Club of Great Britain. Related actions of SCGB director Gerry Aitken

This will come as no surprise to those who have followed the very long saga of censorship/forum closure/banning activities of the Ski Club of Great Britain over the past decade or so:

Four days ago (27 October) SCGB director Gerry Aitken posted on the SCGB open forum his view that apres-ski drinking by SCGB leaders was part-and-parcel of the job - a "responsibility", as he put it. This is the current censored version of the thread discussion concerned ...

http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/membersonly/snowtalk/discussion.aspx/Skiing-general?discussionID=14511#.UnJ3zlPf5xU

Quite extensive censorship has taken place to that thread, to the extent that all material posted by myself has been removed without consultation. Although I've received no notification from the Club's HQ, it seems that my log-in to the forum no longer works, so it functions as 'read only' from now on. Gerry Aitken is therefore free to describe me as an "ex-member" of the SCGB - as he has done - with no right of reply permitted. My responses to that description (my membership commenced in 1962 and has been continuous since 1987) have been deleted. My membership is actually paid up to the end of October 2013.

I take very strong exception to these censorship actions, which contravene the rules of the SCGB forum (supposedly designed to permit freedom of expression) and remove material which is entirely compliant with the forum's rules. These actions ignore the Club's long tradition of tolerance, and the founding values of its original members. All material posted was truthful, factual and non-offensive.

I'll shortly post up images of the censored material, which were copied and archived by a fellow snowHead. In that way there will be some permanent record of what's taken place here.

These actions of the Ski Club of Great Britain reinforce my personal belief that the organisation should be shut down. It has simply become a gravy train for expenses-paid skiing and other jollies, by an elite who take any action to protect their status quo and privileged positions. The Club is entirely ruled by men (a Council of 11 members) to the exclusion of women (the last female director of the SCGB resigned a few years ago) - a kind of 19th century throwback, somewhat remarkable for an organisation founded in 1903.

The Ski Club has persistently published false information about head injuries (to promote sales of ski helmets), fabricated Scottish snow depth reports over several years, published false membership data, made bogus inflated audience claims to generate revenue for its online services, and so on. A substantial sum of money (£10,000s) relating to its quasi-charitable 'Respect the Mountain' environmental fund is unaccounted for. A "long-term tree planting project" with the Woodland Trust (quoting official SCGB wording) was seemingly abandoned after 18 months, despite ongoing funding to this day.

Yet, despite all that, the SCGB has the audacity to expel a long-standing member for no valid reason, and censor perfectly reasonable comment.

Yours, 'Disgusted of Tunbridge Wengen'.

This clip indicates the most significant censorship.

Note the quoted text from Aitken's original claim.
He has then changed it from "ex-member" to
"ex-equipment editor of the Ski & Board"
(which is incorrect, since I've never held that position).

Here's an opportunity to emerge from your self-imposed cat-pissed laptop and enjoy a refreshing apres-ski drink (a nice hand-poured Guinness perhaps?) without the hassle of actually having to dress up in a blue jacket and lead anyone down a mountain: a nice friendly rendezvous for PJ Ski - wit, raconteur, charmer - to meet some internet friends.

Just specify a date and a delightful early-evening venue can be arranged.

Now ... this is significant, in my view ... I did not see (perhaps mistaken) SCGB leaders on the SCGB stand of the London Ski Show on its opening day (Wednesday). The stand was staffed by people in black polo-shirts with Ski Club logos who I did not recognise. Are these paid recruitment staff, or does the Club continue a tradition of volunteer leaders/reps encouraging people to join, at the Show?

I recall putting in quite a few unpaid hours to 'man the stand'. It's an essential way of knowing how the Club should operate, what it should offer, and what should go in the magazine. Clubs have to connect with members, non-members, the business they're in ... to understand their context and community generally.

That is all.

Thank you, Alastair.

Good morning, everyone. Today is very likely to mark a historic day for this New Ski Club of Great Britain chat forum - the completion of 50 full pages and therefore 2000 posts (had you noticed that there are 40 posts per page?).

In honour of this achievement, and the SCGB's success in starting this new chat forum, a bottle of genuine Spanish Cava may be dispensed in the vicinity of the SCGB stand at the London Ski Show today. The timing of this cheap stunt is being kept a closely guarded secret.

... is also a realistic threshold for this thread today. This makes New Ski Club of Great Britain chat forum a uniquely successful thread for snowHeads Piste section, and something the SCGB can feel very proud of today. The Ski Club is 110 years old this year (1903-2013) - so that's 1000 views per year.

Aren't numbers wonderful!

English translation, chaps ... "The best laid schemes of mice and men, Go often awry"

All the signs yesterday pointed to this thread completing 50 pages, 2000 posts and 110,000 views ... to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the Ski Club of Great Britain.

But it didn't happen.
