I'm thinking about heading up to Cairngorm for a few days this week and was wondering what days people thought best?
Everything I can find is saying that Thursday and Friday will be best

possibly snowing quite heavy up the top of mountain though and set to turn to snow lower down later. will be an interesting next 48 hours to see if the snowpack gains or receeds.

Looks like it may be have been snowing at the top of Cairngorm from the Ptarmigan cam, hopefully the freezing level will lower to bring the snow below the top bowl.

Ricklovesthepowder, Looks like there's been a bit of a top up at all resorts over night. There was even a dusting of snow at sea level where i live this morning down in the central belt.

Lasts nights snow was just the start of a good few snowy days, webcams now showing snow down to Aviemore although I'm not sure that'll stick around with temperature fluctuations and the freezing level rising and falling. If the forecasts are correct we should see snow falling right up until Sunday at least with high winds up to Friday then calming down a bit after that - Saturdays looking relatively calm with snow falling, then Monday looking calm too and could even see some sun but temps still predicted to be cold. However it seems that snow was more widespread in Scotland than initially predicted and temperatures colder, let's hope for more of that cold!
Comparing the Glencoe cams with the Cairngorm ones it looks as if more has fallen there than in the east, Nevis looks more like a dusting though but that could be the affect of the wind.
BTW, 3 to 4 inches being reported down the road in Kingussie this morning!

Weather has certainly closed in around Glencoe recently. Snowing pretty steadily on the last few video clips from the
webcam at the foot of the Main Basin T-bar, but it's almost completely obscured by snow again having not long been cleared!

It was a wild and stormy day on the hill today but some fun was still to be had.
Here's a report fresh from the hill:-
"Just arrived back from The co! The wind was pretty bad and the viz came n went, it snowed heavily on and off down to car park level all day! All the runs are filling in with lovely fresh snow which the wind is blowing nicely into the gulleys. Rode down to the car park in knee deep pow! down the fence line its still a bit sketchy but when the storm clears it should be awesome until then may the force be with you!"
Derek Morton
Heavy snow has been falling over the last 24 hours and all runs are filling in really well.
Winspeeds for tomorrow are expected to be similar to today so please check with the centre before travelling. However if the wind dies in the afternoon as suggested by MWIS you could be in for a treat.
Conditions later in the week are expected to improve with the wind beginning to die down and the promise of lots more fresh snow (potentially all the way to the carpark) |
Sounds good!

it was rotten up on the hills over the past two days. skied glenshee yesterday, lasted just over an hour by which point even the goretex was soaked thrrough, it was raining so much. called it a day and drove to aviemore yesterday, skiied cairngorm today but high winds meant only the green car park run was open, winds haven't been bad in town but it is trying to snow as andy says - i reckon it's een pumping down the snow on the mountain ( we saw about 3 or 4 cm put down by 2.30pm) but what the winds doing to it is anyone's guess...
andy, we might see you tomorrow then if the mountain is open!
ah yes, report time, glenshee was really suffering with rain, the differnce from sunday to tuesday was mssive, loads of snow gone., but it might have been topped up
right, i';m knackered and i've finished my pint so back to the caravan for me, will try to get out for a pint and more interweb tomorrow...

nbt, sorry to hear it's been a bit cr*p the last couple of days - great how things are turning round now though but I see today Cairngorm is shut but the winds are set to start subsiding into tomorrow - best weather though looks to be from Monday when the cloud should clear, winds will drop right back and all that fresh will be there to slide on, in fact Monday is looking like it could be an excellent day. I'd be tempted to head over to Glencoe though, looks to be filling up a treat there and Glencoe in fresh pow and sunshine is hard to beat!

Too windy for the chair today so I took a wander up to see how things are shaping up for tomorrow. Main basin , Spring run and East ridge are absolutely loaded with new snow. Mugs alley, The Wall, Thrombosis and and all the plateau runs have gained lots of snow. The snow is wind packed powder with the occasional windscoured area. More snow forecast so when the wind dies down conditions could be pretty special. |
I really like that last bit!

The Met Office is now putting out weather warnings for "Heavy Snow" in the east of Scotland over the weekend with the 'risk' of "20 to 30 cm of snow ... in places, more especially over higher ground" on Saturday and on Sunday "on high ground accumulations of 20-30cm are expected, and locally 50 cm over north and northeast mountains with blizzard conditions and significant drifting".
For Friday it looks relatively clear, webcams are showing sunny intervals at Cairngorm at the moment but winds are still high so access roads and lifts are closed. From the Cairngorm website:
Quote: |
Top Station weather: 50 - 60 mph, westerly.-4.0c, drifting snow.
DUE TO THE CONTINUING HIGH WINDS AND THE AMOUNT Of DIGGING OUT TO DO - IT IS UNLIKELY WE WILL OPEN FOR SNOWSPORTS TODAY.
There has been significant overnight snowfall along with strong winds.
Roads closed, ploughs working. The visibilty on the road is near zero at times due to the drifting snow.
The team are accessing the lower mountain at the moment to see what is possible. it will take quite a while to clear the roads and carparks. |
It looks like this weekend heading west might be the best bet with Glencoe loaded up with snow after the last few days and the likelihood that the heavy snow hitting the east will miss the west. After the weekend if the predicted accumulations are anything like accurate there are going to be some great conditions at Cairngorm, The Lecht and Glenshee although I'm willing to bet that that train tunnel mouth at Cairngorm is going to need some serious digging out!
Freshies!

Glencoe should have summit-to-carpark riding on Saturday.
Is that the first time it's been possible this season?

Whitegold - nope, I've done it on two occasions this winter already, and probably could have done more if I'd had the time to get up the mountain more often!

When i was up there early Feb, you could have done it but your skis may not have been in a great condition when you got to the bottom!!!

we have decided to go up tomorrow night and try and get skiing in cairngorm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I am starting to panic a bit because we dont have snow chains (well actually we have 1!, the other snapped), what I wanted to know is, do you think we will get the car up to the car park midweek? does it get so busy midweek that they open the overflow? I think we will be staying at international starters hotel. is the ski bus stop close by and how often does it run?

If push comes to shove then just park in the Sugar Bowl car park right at the bottom of the hill. Walk up in some soft shoes and leave them upstairs in the Cas Bar. They won't move! It takes less than half an hour to walk up and, if you're lucky, someone will give you a lift. I did this for a fortnight in February and it was fine.
