Another 8" in morzine today, lovely soft light powder!!! It's gonna be epic this weekend, but please everyone stay safe I don 't suppose the snowpack will be the remotest bit stable after this second storm of the week has blown through!!!

Painting finished though it is whiter outside than on our kitchen/living room walls.
Just been for a stroll round Petit Chatel. 30cm since this morning at 1300m.
Roads marginal with winter tyres - some cars (including Swiss which are on winter tyres have chains on).
Hope the sun shows its face tomorrow though French TV meteo has more snow forecast for tomorrow.
Snowmam - a lot can change by Feb but you can be sure that they now have their base.

DJL, glad to hear the painting is finished. Can't wait for the day when I own a pad in the Alps and can compare the whiteness of the kitchen to the pow outside. It's 41 days til I get back to Avoriaz for my January fix. The shakes have started with all this snow

Arrived in Les Gets just after 9 this evening having been on the road for twelve hours from Calais, longest drive we have ever experienced. Nantua - we ground to a halt with ploughs, flashing blue lights etc but eventually the queues cleared. Enormous queue for the tolls going the other way near Geneva, not sure why. Heaps of snow in Les Gets and we just got up our road with 4x4 and winter tyres but had to go past the chalet so we could come at it down hill and take a run up the drive over a huge pile at the bottom. Never been so pleased to get here - and see what tomorrow will bring.

Currently still snowing. Meteosuisse Suisse posted alert last night of up to 50 cm to fall, with further 20cm saturday morning and danger of black ice on the roads. Be surprised if the lifts open this morning with the danger of such vast quantities of snow. Also had road in and out of Champery closed at various times for accidents and cars blocking it! Looking out the window now it's still snowing heavily with what seems like no let up. Tomorrow is supposed to be snow free and then snow fall again Monday!

Well, off again to Avoriaz with friends and their kids early Jan, we took ours when they were young many times, so its great to see another lot of kids enjoying this resort. Reading these posts, we are all excited and the kids cant wait to get on the horse drawn sleighs to the apartment in Avoriaz, although I always feel a bit worried for those horses pulling all that gear, but my husband says they just love it and enjoy the views! Have fun out there

Me too! Just having a coffee stop at Plain Dranse.
Loads of snow - thigh deep in places and that's just off the side of the piste.
My first wide ski experience - went into the hire shop and as usual I just take what is recommended by Henri - Salomon Czar.
Not much in the carving stakes but I'm enjoying staying upright in the deep stuff!

DJL, so envious. Just this second looked at the Avoriaz webcam, looks very cloudy and poor viz. Whats it like over where you are and the Linga side?

Visibility not great but OK. Bit of sun earlier but clouded over now.
Decided to call it a day as its getting chilly and more painting beckons.
6 lifts open at Pre La Joux but nothing at Linga
Score so far this season - days skied 1, crashes 1 (on piste)
Some more sun forecast for tomorrow but the drive home on Monday could be fun.

I wish! We've had an apartment since 1999 but the kitchen was a bit shabby.
I brought out a lot of the kit for the new kitchen and Mrs DJL is staying next week to supervise the fitting. I'll be back at work!
Nice to get a couple of days skiing in though.
Then we're back for Christmas, half term and a lads week in March.
With the snow already here Christmas is nailed on. Hope Feb and March have plenty too!

I don't suppose anyone has a snowblower they'd like to lend/rent me for an hour or so?! Got a chalet car park at home in Montriond and a shop terrace in the centre of Morzine to get sorted and my back can't take much more!

Got another few hours in today. Parking was horrendous at Pre La Joux - looks like a lot of locals decideed to kick off their season today.
All in really good condition - same lifts open as yesterday. Still a few untracked bits though most of the area had had a good going over.
I made the most of the fat skis and ended up in some places I've never been before! Great fun.
Anyone out for the wek before Christmas when they start to open up the Avoriaz link is in for a good one.
More snow forecast for overnight and tomorrow. Started off with clear blue skies but the cloud has steadily built and its now pretty grey

A very fine morning around Avoriaz. Some untracked stuff off Arare and an excellent descent off side of the Coupe du Monde.

Dreadful parking and long wait below Avoriaztoday, people buying season passes really holding up the queues. Took an hour from joining the pass line until I was on the telecabine. Great times when finally up there though. glorious sunny day!

Excellent to hear all this good news! A friend and myself arrive in Avoriaz next Friday 14th, ready steady for opening day.
Looking at avorinet.com, the town has a load of ski/board companies in town, next weekend, so hopefully I can spend even more money. Has anyone experienced this? Is it easy to try out their kit? I want to try some fatter skis. I just bought a new board for off piste, and only just held off from buying skis too. I did think it would be a touch frivolous, seeing as I have only ski'd about 15 days in total(have boarded for last 15 years or so and seem to have picked up skiing quite quickly). This sounds like it could be the week I get to do some practice off-piste. And buy more stuff.
We also plan to have a couple of hours of private lessons from one of the schools in Avoriaz. I did this last year and I'm trying to remember the name of the school/instructor. They had either light blue/green uniforms. I think they were all British. The guy we had was young(20s) with blonde hair. Fairly tall IIRC. Ring a bell with anyone? He was great, so I'd like to try to pre-book from the UK. Thanks in advance.

tman80, Les Gets has been open this weekend - just the Chavannes slopes but good to get the legs going and great up there in the sun today. Heaps busier today than yeserday - cars parked all over the village. Looks as if its going to snow tonight.

marmotte16, best guess, April 2014. OH wants to go to USA next summer to visit friends, money's tight, so I reckon I need to blag a business trip to Geneva to see any snow this year. Which is unlikely as most of my business is in Asia. Still, nil desperandum...
