where would be a good place to park, also how long would it take and is it a difficult drive?
wam15, Park at Nassereinbahn, its free of charge but suggest you get there reasonably early, say by 9.30am, 20-25 minutes drive from Lech and easy if you have winter tyres. If weather turns get the hell out of there and back round to Lech, road across the pass gets closed from St Christoph to Rauz in real bad weather so be careful, hotel rooms can be expensive when booked like that!
downhillalltheway, I'd suggest Arlberg ski school guide with a big team like that. I used them previously and they are great, this year at Christmas out with Torben for 2 days who'se link I posted above, dont know if he will be able to fit you in though, he gets v busy.
stanton, Dont agree that OP is a no go due to early season sharks - theres plenty of runs to do with minimal cover, yes OK on upper Rendl etc but so many options we're never short, back off Kapall, Maienwasen etc.

I tend to agree. I've wrecked skis by going OP in early Jan when the cover was not great (on Pfanne I think) and in hindsight I was lucky not to have injured myself. Unless there's a big dump it's I generally think it's not worth it in the early season. In addition to obstacles a shallow snow pack is more unstable too. Obviously if you know an area and know what you're doing then go for it:-) I am quite certain I'll be tempted in a couple of weeks time if the snow keeps up... and I'll only have myself to blame when my skis are trashed.

Plenty of places will be absolutely fine, plenty of places more risky (ie Rendl).

I broke my leg last year in Mayrhofen, when we got the big dump in early December with no base, after my tip caught a rock and careered my leg into it.. so echo stanton and sah's sentiments! However.. I'd be very surprised if a guide didn't know where the safe and good spots were!

This really goes against the grain but I'm going to go with Stanton on this one.
Once I cracked my shin bone by skiing offpiste on minimal/variable cover. Looked OK from above but my right ski hit something below. Nearly pushed my knee through my shin bone.
A good guide will tell you if it's worth going off piste or not and will find you some good runs if it's available.

Since this off piste early season incident a few season back, it is allways worth reminding.again.
I think it was 5-6 seasons back maybe more. An American was killed In an Avalanche early season pre Xmas
In Lech am Arlberg. He was only 10 Metres off the side of the marked piste.
This can happen early season with early snowfals settling on a warm hill. Glide Avalanches can occur
Just like last season.
Previous to last Thursday it has been +10C in the region!

We arrive in Lech on Sun 16th Dec and all these high temps as stanton, says have been a worry.
Been looking forward to this trip as never have skied in Austria . We are 14 adults and kids and staying in Ski Total's Chalet Sonneck - anyone else there at that time ?
Unfortunately one of my kids broke her big toe last week. Next concern after the snow cover is can she get a ski boot on.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

alltnaha, I will be surprised if snow cover is a concern in two weeks time.
You know it makes sense.

nozawaonsen, thanks , I knew we were taking a risk but the pre Christmas week price was good . We ofetn go that week and one year it was green fields around Flaine right up to 2 days before we arrived. I had bought large scale maps for walking and was about to hire a car but the temps fell and a big dump arrived just in time.

Small amount of snow today, 1cm maybe at resort level, should be good for Thursday higher up at least. Think the lift office are worrying a little, they told us Saturday this morning, and have now reverted to Thursday.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Probably raining tomorrow in town (snow on the hill) but very good chance it will change to snow in the late afternoon >> evening.
Friday looks like we could see a significant DECENT dump

So who's gonna be there on Sat?
I just booked a last minute Chalet deal for me and a mate for Lech arriving Saturday on the basis of the recent snowfall and a snowy week forecast this week to top it up, the webcams looked nice and white today, so hopefully we will be getting some good skiing Sunday onwards.
Will most of the Arlberg area be opening up at the weekend?? Any ideas what to expect?

luigi,
Dont expect 100% operations. It never is first two weeks of season. There just be few lifts open. 50%max if that.
Nothing high (valluga) will nor be open. I doubt Rendl will be open until week before Xmas.
Stuben probably only Albona1. Lech & ZurS just a few lifts. White ring will not be open almost 100% certain of that.
Still its early season few people. .A

Aaagh, last time I was in Lech for a couple of days I couldn't do the Weisse Ring as it was bad visibility due to constant snowfall!
I hope there's more than just a few lifts in Lech-Zurs open though. I suppose it will be the lifts that serve the ski routes that will be not be operating, but hopefully most of the ones with prepared slopes will!?!
Is there an official announcement anywhere that lists what will open at the weekend??

luigi, the Arlberg always takes a staged approach to lift openning at the very start of the season. There should be plenty to keep you amused, but there will be quite a few lifts closed. Looks like you might get some sunshine next week to enjoy all the fresh snow in next week.
