Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Any one in meribel at the minute? What's conditions like at the minute? Coming out on Saturday so hope they're good enough to keep me entertained for the week.

I was looking for more detailed descriptions, webcams show what appears to be rain but hard to tell on a webcam that's all. And they also don't give much away on how it is to ski.

I'm off out their on Saturday as well, so have been watching it closely. This mornings skiclub snow conditions report says Pistes: excellent, Resort Runs: excellent, off-piste:powder (http://www.skiclub.co.uk/skiclub/snowreports/snowreport.aspx/Meribel) I don't think there's been much in the way of precipitation today.
Local forecast shows sunshine next few days (http://ski-area.meribel.net/nc/weather-report.html). Avalanche risk is 4/5.

Is it that time already?, I'm in Motteret at the moment. There has been quite a bit of fresh snow the last few days, so conditions have been nigh on perfect although in VT yesterday there were very strong winds on Cime de Caron and Orelle which had blown a lot of the cover away at the very top.

Last night there was a reasonable amount of rain and it was fairly mild today. On piste conditions are still mostly great, off-piste still good but less powdery then they were a couple of days ago and the snow definitely a bit icier.

There was a lot of low cloud today, I would guess from about 2300m and down, so you had to stay above this to see where you were going, not helped by the Vizelle bubble in Courchevel being out of action today. However this had all gone by about 4pm and I think the forecast for Friday is good.

Cheers for the info there guys!

Kamikaze, lets hope the conditions stay good for next week, hope you have a great holiday! Also i see some snow forecast for next weds, thurs so maybe some powder to play in for a day are so.

Whitters, thanks for your comments, found it pretty helpful to hear someones first hand opinion on pistes etc. The rain do much damage? Hopefully the wild weather will disappear sharpish. Enjoy the remainder of your holiday.

How are things now in Meribel? We are off there in 3 weeks and hubby has been all doom and gloom because the freezing level has been so high and he seemed to think there had been no new snow since Xmas Day. Which clearlly reading this is a load of tosh. Smile

A beautiful day weather wise today, with some great on piste skiing to be had over in Les Menuires today. It was very mild but slush-free everywhere we went. There were a few icy patches appearing, especially on the last leg down to Mottaret from Plan des Mains.

The huge amounts of snow we had earlier this week means that nearly all is open, but a fresh downfall or two wouldn't go amiss as there are a few brown patches appearing down low.

Very much like a late-March/early-April day today - spring snow on piste, quite nice in places... Due to stay sunny most of the week, so will only keep going in the same direction - time to follow the sun!

Just to confirm that today in Meribel was indeed Spring skiing. Several guests reported 'sugary' snow up high but icy conditions down low. Beautiful blue skies, warm sun and 3 degrees throughout the day. Compares favourably with the 'very icy' and 'horrible' conditions yesterday. Hopefully the sun has softened up the snow some.

The forecast is poor for snow but great for skiing. Sunshine and clear skies into next week now. Meribel needs some more regular snow as opposed to the fortnightly dumps separated by long spells of sunshine and warm temperatures.

Back yesterday after a week in Courchevel. We had everything from rain, powder, sun, cloud, slush, ice. Powder day on Tuesday (or was it Monday?!!) - first tracks down the World Cup Slalom slope, and off piste under the Vizelle bubble highlights for me. Wednesday was terrific with a little more fresh on top on fresh groomed slopes - first down Combe Pylons was a thrill and gentle off piste in 1650 was a blast. Really warmed up through the day and rained hard Wed night. As we finished on Friday pistes lower down were pretty bare and scratchy with the icy base showing through in parts and slushy below 1500. Higher up was still ok though, Saulire and Combe de Pylons still good. I finished the week on Jean Blanc which was amazingly awful and drained the little I had left in the legs. Overall not a bad week but valley needs some snow and colder temps to consolidate things on and off piste.

Thanks to Skivo2 in Le Praz, to Izzie and Tom for tuition.

Last Friday was the worst and most widespread unmanageable sheet ice I have ever skied on (boarded in this instance, actually). The sun was beating down all day, it had only snowed as recently as two days prior, and it barely softened at all. We skied about 15 runs all over Courchevel and Meribiza, and found nothing but concrete-hard pistes. Really weird, and utterly unpleasant.

had a nice day in La Masse in the morning and skied down to lac du lou. only a few nice bits the rest were pretty firm with rain crust on the what appeared to be powder. breakable crust not great fun. then over to the meribel side and skied the meribel couloir off the saulire peak. pretty rocky entry but had been skied and decent heavy snow with small moguls

There was some avi debris on skier left but other than a not so fun scrapy side slip in left of the pylon and in the sun it was okay

Then into the emile alais gully south entry which was pretty good snow but a bit of breakable crust at top made it a bit scary.

afternoon in Les Aval and found some powder but also a lot of soft breakable crust which was okish to ski on in the untracked bits but quite nice after having been skied out.

pistes are pretty hard but some of the off bits on the side are pretty good chopped up snow

Also flying out on Sunday, how does a timid intermediate cope with so little snow and so much ice? Serious question.... Should I bother buying a lift pass? Staying in Courchevel 1650.

We're off to Courchevel on Saturday. Metcheck is showing snow on Fri / Sat / Sun. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for the updated video snow report on courchnet tomorrow: http://www.courchnet.com/images-and-videos/courchevel-video-snow-reports.htm
Doesn't look so bad if there's fresh snow down, or am I being naive? Smile

Having just got back from 1650, I'd say the icy slopes are the lowest ones. Higher up the snow is holding up significantly better. The slopes on the top of the hill at Courchevel seem to be fine, the icy conditions aren't anywhere near as bad as you are probably fearing.

The Courchevel pass covers a fairly wide ski area, but it depends on who you are skiing with and where you're planning to go. Could be a better option than a 3V pass if you're not going to be out there all day, but avoid the lowest slopes and you will be fine - I'd personally suggest if it's a concern to get the bubble back down from the top as the run into Courchevel was icing up a bit last week.

You can cope with ice. It might be a bit fun now and again, but take it easy, remember to relax and not try and dig your edges into it, and you will be fine. If you're really timid or finding it really difficult, get a couple of lessons with a sympathetic instructor who should be able to work with you to cope with it.

Courcheval above 1850 v nice today, posted well prepared. Meribel icy high up, slushy low down. At least the cold should allow some snowmaking. Generally not as bad as expected.

Positive thinking, that's what I need, I am going to think of your words each time I feel as though I am frozen to the spot. I CAN DO IT, I WILL DO IT!!!!!!!

HAZYTRON, I was out there last week and only encountered a bit of real icy stuff, heading down into Mottaret. Snow everywhere else was in pretty good shape and they are very good at preparing the pistes each night. If you do come across ice, just keep your skis flat and slide down until you come to a patch of softer snow you can turn on - or just start side slipping back the other way. 1650 tends to have nice quality snow, you'll be fine Very Happy

Any Snowheads in Meribel next week ?

I am there with a big group, but keen to meet up - especially if anyone interested in some Off Piste exploring.
I know the snow looks rubbish, but fingers crossed.

If no SHs , it might have to be SCGB !!!

Light to moderate snow now in mottartet (and I think all of 3V) with lots of cloud. Hopefully will get a much needed boost to the snow cover. A few cms would go a long way to improving the surface snow which is icy/sugary/thin in many places.

We set off this morning and managed to bag a completely untracked valley. The Cucumber as it is known locally, very tough entry as firm windslab breakable crust but after a half hour or so of gentle turns and a few tumbles in the group it softened up and we found this

not bad eh ?? a45 minute skin up a ridge and caught a ridge with perfect powder, sorry no piccys had too much fun Toofy Grin Toofy Grin

after a 45 min hike out taxi waiting for us for a short trip back to st martin and then home in some light snow, top top day

skimottaret, definitely some patches of soft about for those who dare brave the crust... Very Happy No photos this week as yet, but conditions off piste, despite being variable, have yielded some pleasant surprises...

Quelques flocons this afternoon, almost a whole 1cm of fresh by 4pm up high... break out the fat skis!

offpisteskiing, i have been really surprised after the rain that we found more than a few patches with only a touch of crust on it. been really a good week. yesterday went into the orelle valley from the top of col chair and booted up the col pierre lourie (sp) it was very hard in there but then up and over on the highest chair (cant remember the name) we found some decent snow

I am in La Tania this week-end. My impression of the courchevel valley today: hard. A little bit of fresh snow in the afternoon, but only a dusting over very hard and occasionally icy pistes. It still beats working, but i've had a lot better. Try out the rest of the 3v tomorrow. (via SMS)
