SteveKirby, (or anyone else). Do you know if the park is open in Soelden? At the moment the lack of an open park, is pointing us towards Hintertux. Thanks.

St Anton -just spoke to the ski lift company. Currently only 4 lifts and 3 small pistes open - 4km according to the website, but looks a bit more to me. But the young lady tells me they hope to open a few more tomorrow, and hope to have about 50% open by Saturday despite the warm weather. So that is a lot more cheerful (if to be believed)! Fingers still crossed!

Re St Anton
As I said before. St Anton will make as much snow as it can & save/preserve the pistes to town for the main Xmas/NY holidays.
Ski numbers now are few so they do not need to open much but Xmas & NY even with German/dutch cancelations it will be packed the snow will not last long at all if the temps remain high.
Dont expect much pistes open before Xmas Eve (Unless it snows).

|
|
|
|
|
stanton, Do you think there will be many Dutch/German cancellations? I still need accommodation, have some in Lech from the 29th Dec to the 2nd Jan but need somewhee for Dec 28th and Jan 2 and 3. Would prefer all in one spot but thought staying in Lech would mean less queues and besides no one in St Anton/Pettneu would offer me accommodation crossing two weeks, but maybe their attitude will change now?
kamikaze, you could be a tour operator with all that planning, I hope you are getting a fee for your work!

Lift operators are busy in Lech and St. Anton. It was only one lift in operation yesterday. Now, they put the other lifts into operation gradually:
Lech-Oberlech
Petersboden
Schlegelkopf
Zürs
Seekopf
St.Anton, St. Christop, Stuben
Galzig
Osthang
Tanzböden
Valfagehr (Rauz)
Schindlergratbahn

Peter Ross,
If they havent paid an advance or faxed confirmation I expect there to be alot. I mean why drive all the way down if there no bad snow. If theres no snow we will stay at home or book a last minute sun holiday somewhere.
Shouldnt be a problem with the dates you need . Your lucky you got New Years Eve booked as thats busy regardless of snow. Although houses do like to book 1 full week, this season they maybe more flexible.

stanton, thanks, you are like an encylopedia on all things St Anton! You advice is super. I reckon even if I'm offered accommodation in St Anton now I'm better staying in Lech as the on slopes crowds will be more manageable, long queues are no fun, do you think this is a good idea or might St Anton be tolerable crowd wise then?

In either resort at this time or any peak time.
My advice is to get up onto the first lift 08:30, get your skiing done before 10 (when the ski schools start) . It amazing how much terrain you can cover in 1.5hrs with empty slopes,no lift lines. hte rest of the day you can just Q up with the rest but at least you can say you actually got some sking done

Latest news from Kartnen (Carinthia) region:
The resorts here suffer from the lack of snow. The Molltal glacier is the only exception. All the lifts and pistes are open here. (Not a large area)
- Heiligenblut (the resort beside the highest peak in Austria) has 30 fresh snow which seems to be enough for a start with one working lift.
- Turracher Hohe (a lovely secret resort) is open from tomorrow with 4 lifts.
- Nassfeld-Hermagor (another still hidden resort with 110 km pistes) received 40 cm snow, likely to open from Thursday.
- Bad Kleinkirchheim (Franz Klammer's hometown) is still in bad shape. It is too mild, they can use the snow guns only above 1500 meters.

Even the ultra-cautious Saalbach site is suggesting snow for Sunday. Be hopeful, unless you are a small white goat in range of Bev!

You love her really. Still snow on the roofs in Saalbach, and some decent fronts heading that way according to my favourite old-fashioned wavy lines from Bracknell.

So it is! Exeter! Has it changed? I'm sure it used to be Bracknell. Still good wavy lines though. Am I the only one who moans at the illiterate BBC weather forecasts that mean very little if you can't see the pressure patterns?

The upside of skiing in Austria when there short on the snow is that your edges & base dont get blown out when sliding across the grass

Chris Bish, yes the whole thing moved to Exeter a year or few ago. It did used to be Bracknell. Some local weather forecasters on the BBC will show the pressure charts (eg Look North), and the Countryfile forecast often will. Otherwise you certainly aren't the only one, but I wonder how many people who care enough to be able to read them are that bothered when they are available in so many other places (newspapers, web, etc.)?

Hey there all,
Just new to the forum but loving the info.......
Of to St Anton with a crew for Christmas on the 23rd and looking at the current snow situation am just a tad worried
Should I be????
Do you think much of the area will be open and boardable as at the moment it seems like the majority is closed!
Just getting very edgy at this stage so your wise advice would be great

benya, A very warm welcome to snowheads. It really is what it seems to be and there are no tricks or snags.
There are quite a few of us worrying about our Xmas snow fix in Austria at present, but if you have read the threads you know the picture. I am pretty hopeful that there will be more snow in the East next week from Sunday on. Even so, there is enough to do a bit of sliding and there is always the glaciers. Look on the bright side!

I'm off to Hintertux tomorrow morning. Advance party of friends went out last night, and they're reporting that the snow conditions are superb (and that's from a fussy boarder who normally snubs the Alps for Colorado and Utah). 1150m vertical open, 53km slopes and (reportedly) 130cm snow-depth over almost all of the skiable area (down to 2100m). I'll find out for myself tomorrow

I noticed questions earlier on the Zillertal Arena. Here is the latest info from their page:
Friday:
Zell: all the lifts are open, except for Sportbahn, Kreuzwiese and Krimml-X-Press
Gerlos: all the lifts are open, except for Vorkogel, Teufeltal
Königsleiten: Königsleiten 2000, Hochalmkar, Larmachkopfbahn, Sonnwendkopfbahn serves as a 'feeder'
Gerlosplatte: Plattenkogel-X-Press I+II, Speedy
The links between
Gerlos-Königsleiten: open
Königsleiten-Gerlosplatte: open
from Saturday:
new operation:
The link betwen Zell and Gerlos is open (Krimml-X-Press, Teufeltal)
Gerlosplatte: Duxer 4er
Info on Mayrhofen:
Lifts are operational currently:
Penkenbahn, 3SB Penken, SL Babylift, Horbergbahn, 4SB Lärchwald, 8SB Tappenalm
also from Friday: 150er Tux, 6er Wanglspitz
and from Saturday: 6SB Schneekar, SL Mittertrett
A question. Is the word 'feeder' a correct translation of the German 'Zubringer'? (as I read on Saalbach page)
Thanks.
