@Roscoe, all the local forecasts are suggesting heavy rain to 2000m (0C isotherm 2200m) for most of Thursday, before dropping to 1100m on Friday. There seems a pretty broad consent for Thursday; the variance is how much snow will fall on Friday. Chamonix Meteo say 20-30cm, others suggest a lot less.
So could tomorrow potentially completely wipe out the dump of the last few days? Or will there only be a slight impact with the damage repaired on Friday depending on how much snow arrives?
Hard to say. I’m just heading up to Avoriaz now for a ski so will have a better idea later. I’m told there has been around half a metre in Avoriaz over the last couple of days so it’s hard to imagine that being totally wiped out. It’s only a day and a half of rain. They have done a lot of piste bashing as well to try and maintain the base.
At 1400m we have around 40cm’s. I think anything not bashed will suffer badly at that level.
Fingers crossed, the rain just consolidates the base, which will then freeze over Friday and the weekend and we have the beginnings of a ski season.

@polo, Was wondering why the Les Gets cannons have been blowing. They must expect low temps to last. Les Gets not opening early like Avoriaz I assume. Wonderful pics by the way!

Late Friday afternoon for the real temp drop, hopefully 10-20cm lower down, but meanwhile, cannons been on for 24hrs, bashers and lift maintenance are flat out, looks like they are trying to put up a fight against 50mm rain. Heard blasting and a helicopter earlier
What I really want to know is why is there a foot of untracked snow on the side of the piste ...
Quick Q - which is the quickest way to get from Prodains to the Nyon telepherique on the navette please - do you have to go all the way to Pleney to change between lignes A and N?
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've got a silly question regarding lift passes so it probably should be in the resort forum. But here goes, Will I need to have brought my (and family's) ski pass prior to arriving at the Prodains cable car to complete are journey to Avoriaz and our accommodation? I've previously stayed in Morzine and skied Avoriaz but had the pass when heading up from the Super Morzine.
@franga, can't be greedy.....I was restricted by my touring partner who only has very short legs, she was wrecked after the cold climb in the snow yesterday....and when I started skinning this morning I then realised she had already run back to the car, refusing to budge. So slid back down on skins, found dog lead, pointed at the sunshine in the sky and started the up again.
Amazing conditions for anyone in the area....I had to bail early and was limited to the nearest blue piste...still messing with the new camera angles. Sorry am not the person for bus / lift pass knowledge but am sure someone will know soon.

@Roscoe, it’s a guess but I think you’ll need a lift pass to travel from Prodains to Avoriaz.
I chose not to go to Avoriaz but instead toured up to a small peak which sits at 2000m on the border between France and Switzerland. Snow wise, I started at 1200m and there was just about enough snow to ski on. At 1500m there was around 40cm and at 2000m 50cm ish. So, in answer to your earlier question, away from the pistes I think we may lose all the snow below 1200m with the upcoming rain event; I’d hope that above 1500m we will keep a reasonable amount. It sounds like they’ve been busy bashing the pistes in Avoriaz and Les Gets which will of course help.
@franga, you can change from A to N at the cemetery, two stops before Pleney.

You can get on/off at the Rond Point de la Mouille au Clerc (near the fire station which is where the N and A routes meet). It’s only a couple of stops from Pleney mind.

The short answer is yes, you will need a lift pass.
The longer answer is think about __which__ lift pass, depending what time you'll be arriving/leaving and if you plan to do any skiing on either of those days. You don't need a full ski pass just to ride up from Prodains to Avoriaz, a pedestrian 'single' will do, which can be bought from either the manned desks or an automated machine when those are closed. A single pedestrian ticket is/was €8.50, which is __probably__ (up to you to check!) cheaper than adding an extra day to your ski passes.

@franga, this is a useful site (when it works) - shows a live view of where the buses are. https://www.agilbus.fr/morzine

Presumably live locations once the season starts. Shame it doesn't show the Ardent route as well.

Yes it does, most of the time! It’s not terribly reliable tbh.
M bus is run by the Montriond marie not Morzine so not the same company - agree it would be good if it did as that one seems to be flakier in terms of punctuality compared with most of the others.

I was hoping you'd say that - I can see this stop on the map BUT not on the timetable (which I presume just shows the main stops as opposed to every single one)

Yes, that’s right @franga - the timetable just seems to have the ends of each route. When the buses are running and the website works they put expected times on each stop.

Yes would make complete financial sense to just buy a single on arrival instead of a full days skiing on the pass. Also an additional complexity is that my sister-in-law and her 2 kids will be joining us but the kids are complete beginners so would probably not even need lift passes for our short stay.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

OK, now it's really testing my memory but I think they will.
Reasonably sure both the Plateau chair and Chapelle drag have pass gates and can't remember if either Dromonts or Ecoles drags are free or not. They just let you mess around a couple of short, uninteresting greens though and after just a couple of days I'd have thought you'd want to be using the Proclou run and so chair - and that's deffinetly pass controlled. They would only need Avoriaz passes though (which would include Prodains).
(quite extensive really, especially for only €32!)

We're only there for the weekend, and my sister-in-law, who can ski, will likely just be taking them on the nursery slope in the middle of town. I dont expect them to come off that if i'm honest. My wife and boys will just have to head off and meet them for lunch and apres.

From the Avoriaz webcam's, the rain doesn't appear to have done that much damage as yet. But the night is long and the webcams can only show so much.

Not expecting this rain event to be a big issue and ts not a bad thing to have rain in the mix to strengthen the base. They would not have decided to open this weekend if ot was going to be an issue and stlill plenty of snow on my balcony in Chatel at 1260m.

Fantastic news. With more snow forecast for the weekend and into next week, it sounds like today might help in the long run.

@Ozboy, the webcam at the bottom of Ranfoilly etc in Les Gets still looks ok (everything’s still white anyway!), so hopefully it’ll be turning to snow this evening.

Ensembles suggest another snowy spell toward the end of next week. Hopefully just in time for our arrival on 14th.
Can anyone on the ground let us know how things are looking after the rain today?

Two trips currently booked for Les Gets. First is a lads weekend at the very start of Feb, the family arriving Easter weekend. Will be praying to the snow gods that the snow lasts that long!

@zzz, good news. Looking at webcams everything up top still looks white, and as it stands the forecast is for a fairly extended unsettled period with LPN about 1500m (to the untrained eye!). So probably not a whole lot in town but Super M upwards should be good.

@zzz, yes, our garden is turning white on our cameras as we speak!
Portes du Soleil has lucked in! Going by reports on Metro Alpes, the region has the lowest snowline in the French Alps this morning. It's still raining up at 2000m or higher further south!
