@Juddernaut, by the looks of the Cham cams, it will all alright on the (piste) night.
Very low areas might have problems though.
'Twas always thus.

I am hearing you @under a new name but because the lower pistes are closed the higher pistes become rammed with people. You then get the palaver of queues, unwashed hordes wrecking the snow and lots of slower skiers to avoid. Also, sometimes those higher slopes are not suitable for beginners who are then stuck with nowt. Man made snow a bit different to ski on for mine too. It is also nicer to have the village covered in schnee and looking all purty.

@Juddernaut, not such a problem in Cham where generally the below 1,900m slopes (les Houches and Balme excepted) are really access only and in the case of Brevent-Flegere unreliable for most of most seasons anyway.
Your point of course quite valid for e.g. Morzine/Les Gets.

I went up for a few hours round Avoriaz- couldn't ski back down to ardent - had to get the bubble.
Snow is reasonable- lift queues heavy due to a huge board test/ festival going on

Been in Morzine since Saturday, obviously no skiing in morzine or les gets right now. Avoriaz opened on Friday with a handful of pisted and loads of day trippers - today they're due to open Fornet too, hopefully less day trippers. Slim pickings!

@mistral_ski,
It's not just the lower slopes that you need to worry about. There won't be any skiing, full stop, anywhere in Les Gets, or Morzine, this Xmas unless there is some kind of snow miracle. There is no snow, either real or man made at the moment. All skiing will have to be on the few open pistes in Avoriaz. If you decide to book your four year old into ski school, it won't matter which one because they'll all end up in Avoriaz anyway.

Report from the higher areas of Chatel yesterday afternoon ( hike up Cornebois)- chance of something open next week depending on damage done by Thursdays rain perhaps rebalanced by a bit of snow on Saturday... http://www.chatelweb.com/chatel_snow_report.php

@mistral_ski,
6C outside my house. It's going to have to do a lot of cooling for it to be snowing anywhere near here
It will have to be by car. You have a number of options. Drive to Prodains and take the lift to Avoriaz. The parking isn't free. Drive to Ardent and take the lift to Linderets. The parking is free there. The problem you will have is finding a space. Both will be heaving.
The third and rather sneaky alternative is to drive halfway up super Morzine, it's a little further, and take the proclou lift. That will depend on whether it's running of course, and whether you then have enough snow on the piste beneath Proclou to return to your car.

@CaravanSkier, to commiserate with you, we are out to Les Gets for a week from this weekend. My only planned ski break this year. Was so looking forward to my first Alpine Christmas ski - and now seems it is to be my first Alpine Christmas hike.
My consolations are twofold:
1) In every skiers life some rain (or flight delay or pistes closure or worst case scenario accident etc.) must fall. Think of this as getting one of those out of the way, and look forward to better luck on the next trip.
2) In the grand scheme of things it's a minor complaint. We are all so lucky to even be able to take ski holidays, in comparison to some poor folks. So sip a Christmas drink while looking out over those green pistes and be thankful!
And of course in the realms of fantasy miracles can happen

Too true @5RED,
That said I have done tonnes of skiing all over the world and worst I have had is a few low vis days and a few days of rain that didn't affect skiing too much. Been very lucky though - last minute trip changing dumps etc.

@5RED - could I ask? I'm taking my wife and 3 boys on their first ever ski trip to Les Gets this Sunday (21st) for a week. From your post I make the assumption you've been before. Is there much to do in the absence of the White stuff? Is it worth bringing any ski kit at all? My kids are 6, 3 and 1 by the way ...

@jboyd39221, luckily Les Gets is a lovely little town, with great food shops and some nice restaurants. In the absence of snow, there's a central large ice-skating rink, a cinema, a mechanical music museum, a visit to Ferme du Caroline (a working cheese-making farm) and more, all to be found on the official website http://en.lesgets.com There's also horse and carts which you can hire for a guided spin through the village. And plenty of hiking up he hills if it doesn't make you sick thinking of what you could be skiing.
Santa Claus 'lives' in Les Gets according to the tourist board and I think you can visit his elves workshop somewhere. He is also due to ski down the front du Neige at 17:30 on Xmas Eve - though if he manages this in these conditions my belief in him will be fully restored....He will probably still appear, even without the snow, and that's to be followed by fireworks and some free vin chaud / hot chocolate, which will be a fun thing to bring the kids to. All at Front du neige, adjacent to the tourist office. It's worth going in to the Office early in the week, and enquiring about activities for kids. They're usually helpful, possibly even more so with no-snow guilt.
Of course some runs in Avoriaz may be open and you can get a bus there from Les Gets. It will be packed though if that's the case.
Re ski kit I'll be bringing boots but hiring skis there, in the event they're needed.
Good luck and let me know if you've any more questions. There's others on here who own properties in Les Gets and will be more knowledgeable than I.

@jboyd39221, there's an outdoor ice rink and the Office du Tourisme will have events daily to entertain the children for a short while.
http://en.lesgets.com/great-and-week-events/weekly-events.html
There is (I hope it's still there, it was a couple of seasons ago) a little pottery place for kids to go and spend some time while creating their own masterpieces. Someone here might know the name of it, it's on the main road near the cinema. Morzine is a short bus ride away too.

@5RED, answered to a much higher standard
The bubble lift up Mont Chery mid station should be running. That's a nice trip up for youngsters, with nice walks at the top, good views and somewhere to get a hot chocolate or lunch at the Belvedere. And saying that, the Red egg bubbles on the other side might well be running up to the Chavannes.
