We have been skiing around Les Gets for the last few days and its all been fine - we are out by 9 and finish by about 1 most days. The Tulipe was really lovely this morning. Not sure what had happened to the Nauchets lift at about 12 as we were heading down there and saw it going very, very slowly with no one on it and a huge queue at the Ranfolly to get back to the Chavannes that way so we went back up the Grains d'Or and down the Vorosses and caught the bus back up to our chalet. It was no problem at all for us but I imagine that if people had children to collect, or lunch sorted out somewhere it must have been a nuisance.
One of our friends staying with us was taken out from the back by a small French child on the bottom of the Melezes this morning. We were waiting at the bottom and heard a woman shouting - that turned out to be the mother of small child trying to get him to slow down as he must have been speeding down out of control - skied right into Jil's back so they both ended up on the snow. French mother was very apologetic and marched the child off to the car park at the bottom.

Lift faffer, Don't look at the webcam of Morzine village - that's not where the skiing is. The bottom of Pleney always goes grotty first so don't look there either.
I came back last weekend and despite the temperatures there was lots of snow and it was well maintained. With a bit of fresh forecast over the weekend it will look better but the key issue is the depth already there and it is adequate. I wish I was back out on April 7th.
It's not a classic season but it has been OK.

41 / 47 lifts open in Chatel and 40/44 pistes open.
Its been very warm - but still fun and snow is forecast to lower than 1000m over the weekend (800m ish)
If I can't have powder, then conditions like these are my next favourite option.
I can't speak for the Morzine area, but there is plenty of fun to be had at the moment over here in Chatel!
ps - just posted at the same time as DJL - who sums it up well.

I'm out again on the 8th April and I'm looking forward to it. I've been in Morzine town in February and there has been no snow in the village.
Will the avalanche risk go off the scale with a large dump of snow? I presumed we may be looking at the same kind of high risk as earlier in the season, lot of snow then prolonged dry, warm spell, then lots of fresh on top...

Sounds like Les Gets/Morzine closing on the 13th due to conditions.
This came from our friends at the bottom of the Chamossiere lift.
Mt Chery closing around the 6th according to the owners of the Grande Ourse.

Been laid low with one of those 24hr stomach bug things - but unless my eyes are deceiving me - the weekend snow looks significant and this evening's GFS has upgraded compared to a couple of days ago...
Chatel Snow Forecast Update 19/03/2014: 6.20pm
The very warm and sunny weather still looks coming to an end this weekend with a rain to snow event arriving during Saturday and lasting into Sunday. Although there is still loads of uncertainty for snow amounts, this evening's GFS charts appear to have upgraded, with perhaps 50cm of snow possible over the weekend above mid mountain, if these charts are to be believed. Lower down, amounts will depend on how quickly the rain turns to snow on Saturday evening and also the bare areas around the resort will still be relatively warm after the baking they have had this week, however, amounts on piste could be significant. We should have a better idea of amounts once the event gets within range of the high res Euro4 precipitation model on Friday. The chillier weather looks like lasting through the first half of next week, so after a few days of summer here in Chatel, winter is returning!

I'd looked at pleney web cam which fair enough may have been bottom of pleney and me thinking was the top.
Avoriaz and champery look to be getting some good snow this weekend, morzine mix of rain and snow, hopefully coming down low.
Any skiing is better than no skiing so bring it on

Lift faffer, exactly. I find it really quite perverse that resorts choose (they do) to put up webcams in the most ridiculous places.
And then complain that business drops off.
If you are going to point your webcam at an 800m amsl south facing 30degree slope, is it any wonder that folks might think you have no snow?
Mind you, this from the same people who bury such useless information as opening dates amongst the legal ts&cs of the website...
|
|
|
|
|
|
under a new name, could not agree more about the vagaries of the websites round here - search, search and search again for things like opening dates, and then piste/lifts open. Its OK-ish once you get used to it, save pages etc but for someone just diving in to look something up a complete nightmare. And its not as if they don't spend time and money on the websites but they complicate them rather than making them simple and straightforward.
Rant over... expecting another sunny, warm day today, bit of cloud tomorrow and then amazingly snow from the weekend for a few days - who knows? just seems so unlikely but its happened many times before so no doubt might again.

Quiet day yesterday, glorious sunshine. Icy first thing so plenty of folk falling over, then lovely slush. The high bits above avoriaz (Fornet etc) stayed hard for a surprisingly long time: until after 1130. Then within an hour were slushy.
Been great conditions for messing around in the park. Half-pipe a disaster by 10.30, though.

Chattonmill, do the friends work in the lift office or live near there? I haven't heard any suggestion of early closure except the usual that Mt Chery will be closing around the end of March.
Anyway, lovely morning sking down the mountain and sunbathing on the chairlifts. I'm thinking by the look of the forecast next week my tan won't get the chance to properly take hold. Pistes are holding up well (IMO), they don't seem to have delved too deeply into the big lumps of snow that were harvested from the offpiste a few weeks ago either.
ETA - have just asked a Getois who owns a business in the village and whose brother is a Pisteur, as far as they know it's still the 21st for Les Gets closing,

Rain to snow event is still on for the weekend and amounts still look significant. Potentially remaining rather cold through next week, with the chance of another snowfall.
Sunny and very warm again today.

Great morning on Mt Chery - front in the sun first thing, and the Lievre which is shaded, and then over to the Chery Nord side later. Marmotte in fine nick - did the Chevreuil at about 11.30, and it was a whole lot harder than just about 20 minutes later on Tuesday.

Harry Flashman, shows you just how the angle of incidence of the sunshine makes a biggg difference. Skied down to Dollone (Courmayeur) Sunday around 1500 and it was still quite firm until very near the bottom.

Forecast still unchanged for the weekend - rain Sat pm, potentially turning to snow in Chatel resort at 1200m during evening and lasting through into Sunday. Forecasts and models still suggest 50cm possible upper mountain and significant snow possible on lower half too.
As this snow event edges closer, hopefully we will not see any nasty surprises spring up in the models tonight / tomorrow, as there is still plenty of time for downgrades (though upgrades possible too).
Fingers crossed.

You're dead right - the forecast for the next few days is amazing, especially after the 15-degree afternoons we've been having lately. As the weather ushers in a rejuvenation in 2014 skiing, look out for discounts of 40% or more off chalet holidays in the final weeks of the season. Chalet companies do still have spaces available and the skiing is about to get a whole load better.

The weekend snowfall is now getting into the range of the Euro4 precipitation model. Latest run (midnight last night to 48 hrs ahead) is suggesting approximately 45cm of snow equivalent precipitation in the vicinity. This does not include any potential snowfall from 00h Sunday!
That is quite a lot in a relatively short space of time so suggests very heavy precipitation. Might be some interesting transfer conditions on Sat evening / night.

Might even fall to lower levels than that eventually. How long are you away for as there are hints of this colder weather hanging around for a while!

ChaletsLesGets, rather a lot of posts - all selling your services!
Really finding it hard to believe that we are going to have more snow at the weekend - another clear blue sky day - we were over on the Chamossiere when it opened this morning. I was a bit nervous as the banner at the bottom said it was going to be icy. My OH said it would be no different from the Chevreuil on Mt Chery yesterday, and as it was pisted it turned out to be absolutely fine and no issue. After a couple of runs we moved over to Nyon and enjoyed the sun over there.
Good to see MeMyselfandI on the Chavannes Express this morning and then on the Rosta lift.
and having skied back via the Fys lift accessed over that dratted bridge there is a complete lack of snow on the runs down to the Fys lift. But as the lollipops were all taken out and propped up on the side of the piste halfway up I imagine that the pistes must be closed at the top and that the people we saw creeping down through the mud must have ignored the closed signs.

Pamski, lovely to see you as well, sorry I didn't say goodbye, I'm obviously far too used to skiing by myself!
The pistes are holding up surprisingly well considering the melt that's gone on over the last two weeks. Am looking forward to the stuff that's supposed to be arriving but, like everyone, I'm wondering where in the world it's coming from, I'm actually wearing shorts!

Really good day, starred in Avoriaz, did top section of Manchon (sp), did new Prodains lift, v.impressive, headed over to Chaventtes area then towards Linga, snow down there ok but the rucksack police out in force, clouding over at the end of the day and last run to Ardent quite porridgy

Terrible at the top, entry into the piste is enormous ruts and shoulder high bumps. Beyond that it's lovely late in the day. Just be careful on line choice, worth a chair ride up so you can make a plan of attack
