Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Currently it looks like the area might get 15cm or so of snow this week, not as much as we'd like but it is a start, so long as the weather stays cold we should be ok for some man made snow to be put down

Lots of vehicle tracks visible from the Mannlichen webcam - presumably piste markers, fencing and signage, and hopefully fully functioning cannons!

Well I'd guess at pretty much resort level up, but given normal snowfall, there is likely to be a bit more at higher levels than at resort so say 5cm at 2000M and maybe 2cm at 1000M

Chuckball7, welcome to snowHeads, in answer to your questions, if you can get one of the flights into Bern airport this season then the transfer time is 2 hrs by public transport or about 1 hour by road, as for the snowbase it depends when you are there, the best time is generally last week in Jan and first week or two in Feb when generally the base is excellent, however I've had good conditions in both December ond April, in addition they keep adding to the extensive coverage of man made snow which definately helps with the base

By the way next anticipated snowfall should be Friday/Saturday unfortunately it's not likely to be very heavy, perhaps as much as 15cm at Murren more likely 10cm, still it all helps, I understand that the snowmachines are now being used to lay down a base so hopefully by mid December there should be a decent skiable area

thanks as luck would have it am getting ther on the 27th jan with my first day on the slopes being the 28th, staying in lauterbrennen, I realise the lift pass will cover wengen, murren and grindlewald and will do all three in the 7 days i am there, but which would you do first day?

Chuckball7, well my favorite first run of the seson is the gentle quiet blue from Kleine Schidegg down to Brandegg with a stop there for the famous apple fritters, however if you want something a bit more agressive, head up to the Mannlichen on the cablecar from Wengen and start with a gentle red run down to the Mannlichen chair, then as the sun gets onto the slopes ski down to the Lager chairlift then agross to the Gummi lift and then down to the Arven chairlift which will take you up to Kleine Schidegg, from there you could ski to Brandegg, take a train up to Eigergletscher and ski Black Rock or Oh God, ski to the Wixi chairlift and go up the Lauberhorn or go back to the Mannlichen via the Honegg and Tschuggen T-Bars, whatever you choose I'd try to get to the Lauberhorn by 3pm then ski down the red run via Wengeneralp to Innerwengen, take the chairlift up to Allmend and ski down to Wengen.

Another day go skiing at Murren (get the full region pass) or head over to Grindelwald and spend a day skiing at First, there's arround 215km of pistes in the area so it should take the average person a few days to ski them all Laughing

Nice choice D G, the best bit for me is pausing at the sign post at manlichen, after arriving on the cable car, just before launching down the red to the Manlichen chair. The frisson of anticipation, that feeling of ...AT LAST.... and then that first turn, in the most beautiful place in the world.

Whatever run you do first, Chuckball7, it will be great. Roll on January.

Chuckball7, welcome to Snowheads.

Remember you can't ski back down to Lauterbrunnen from Wengen/Grindelwald,this can only be down from Murren via Winteregg (weather permitting) but that time of year should be fine.

For ease i would start with Murren.Take the funnicular from Lauterbrunnen (this will be the last season the funnicular will be running as they are replacing it with a cablecar early next year so its a must)upto Grutschalp and then train it to either Winteregg or Murren.

I would suggest skiing the whole resort as it is so varied. The Schilthon/Birg is a must (depending on your level) aswell as the Schilgrat area. At the end of the day skiing from Winteregg to Lauterbrunnen is a must (saves getting on any transport !!)very relaxing.

Places i suggest to stop for a bite to eat on the slopes are:Schilthorn 3000m(food is average but the view is breathtaking, eating inside in the revolving restaurant),Birg terrace 2676m(eating outside),Schiltgrat Hut 2100m (small area on the piste, burgers are stunning aswell as the view),Winteregg 1578m (eat in or outside, you must try there homemade rosti) and at resort level the Jungfrau Hotel terrace.

Any other questions on Murren just ask and click on 'my gallery' to check out pictures of the resort

Hello Chuckball7 If i was intending to ski all three areas in 7 days i would stay in Wengen not Lauterbrunnen as its a much nicer place to stay.

riverman, D G Orf, Brian T, hibernia, logistically it 'might' make sense for Chuckball7 to stay in Wengen if he intends to ski the whole region within a week but he could be on a tight budget. He also might be wanting to do excursions(Schilthorn or the Jungfraujoch). Im surprised Elizabeth B hasn't commented on Lauterbrunnen wink snowHead

Okay then, I'll comment on Lauterbrunnen!

Chuckball7, where about in Lauterbrunnen are you planning on staying? I like it there, but there's not much nightlife (other than the horner bar!!). The Hotel Oberland does nice food and is good for a quiet drink of an evening.

If you're arriving on a Sat, I'd spend the first day skiing up at Murren (assuming it's not inferno weekend?). That way you'll avoid most of the weekend traffic. After that I'd head up to Manlichen/Kleine Schiedegg. Getting round to First is a bit of a treck, unless you have a car (two trains then a bus), but if you like doing "park stuff" then it's the place to go.

The inferno is the weekend before (18th - 21st Jan),Murren will be quite the weekend when Chuckball7 arrives due to the Inferno being the week before.

Not quite sure where I am staying beleive it or not as my mate has booked it!! I know its a chalet and yes the cheap factor made lauterbrennen the best option as i have bought new gear this year so need to cut down somewhere!! after a good day on the slopes all i need is a half decent bed and a local for a pint!! whats the horner bar? last year i stayed in saas grund with one or two bars so am used to the quiet life!! Thanks for all the opinions on where to start!!! will look to do as much as I can!!!

It's been snowing in Wengen this morning Shocked

Sadly there's still very little snow on the ground, though the nursery slopes in the village have got 10cm of artificial down already which will help make a good base, more snow is expected on Friday with snow showers continuing over the weekend, Murren is doing slightly better with about 5cm in the resort, but there's no snow yet down in the Lauterbrunnen valley, A very chilli -18C currently at the Schilthorn and a slightly more reasonable -10C at the Mannlichen with what looks like 5 to 10cm of snow Little Angel
