The disruption to the polar vortex even got a mention at the end of the BBC1 2230 bulletin last night. It would be nice if all that cold air met some moist air over the alps too!

Steve Sparks, yes it would, especially around the 14th January!

Sitting here in Altenmarkt listening to the rain outside, that GFS15 run looks really good even if it is FI! I've only had to scrape frost and snow off my car once in the past 2 weeks! I hope the Dr Who effect comes to pass. The weather forecasts are indicating at least another half metre for us this weekend.

the break down of the vortex - does it typically bring snow?

Well clearly not if you look at the concurrent precipitation ensembles...duh. Although before the potential deep freeze sets in there is a nice precipitation spike on the 10th.

Well "it" doesn't normally happen to this extent.
And since what follows the disruption of the polar vortex is hard to say with confidence, it's hard to know the outcome in terms of snow.
What is quite likely though is an increase in northern blocking which would send the jet further south, bringing colder air down with it. It would then depend on where and how the jet ended up. In general you might expect this sort of set up to favour the southern Alps.
If we were to end up with more high latitude blocking then you would expect the Atlantic influence to be diminished. So the massive Atalntic storms that bring very wet and often milder weather (but which can produce very heavy snowfall at altitude) would be less likely.

At a guess getting colder from 9/1 and continuing for quite a while. Some snow possible 11/12 Jan but it's still a way off.

First up a look at temperatures.
http://www.wxmaps.org/pix/temp4.html
If you look at the second frame you can really see how the weather starts to cool down in the second week from the North East. It actually starts from around 10 January hitting the eastern Alps first. Currently looks well below average mid month.
Secondly precipitation.
http://www.wxmaps.org/pix/prec4.html
Look at the third frame to see how dry it is in the western and southern Alps. Wetter in Austria.
But cold weather on the way...
Classic shot by Alfred Eisenstaedt.

Ricklovesthepowder, you're not heading out till mid month are you? Cold I would be fairly confident about, at least for the start of your trip, but could yet see more snow. It's still a long way off.

Ricklovesthepowder, I am avid weather follower as the next man, but I've come to realise that nobody can accurately forecast mountain weather 100% accurately all the time! I had 2 weeks in Espace Killy where is snowed on forecast sunny days and vice versa!

nozawaonsen,

Am I reading this right - does this suggest precipitation in the Med week of the 12th? If so, maybe a bit more snow for the Dolomites which have been pretty dry for weeks now?

Sleet and slush down here in Altenmarkt. The A10 Tauernautobahn is closed in both directions either side of the Tauerntunnels to clear the snow from the road surfaces
The B305 Siegsdorf to Reit in Winkl and on to Lofer, Saalfelden and Zell am See is closed due to flooding as are several other roads in that area. Anyone hoping to avoid the vignette may have lucked out. According to the radio the snow level is at about 800m which explains why here in town the snow plough was out several times during the night. However it is very wet and heavy, more slush than real snow. The amount of fresh snow up at Zauchensee must be amazing!

So nozawaonsen, why when this current system that is dropping lots of precipitation coming from the north is it so warm? I normally associate northerly systems with cold. Up to half a metre of porridge at top of schladming, spring like in valley. Trees down from wind and heavy snow, the odd mud slide about.
