Skied the Grands Montets today, not the top section but most of the options from the Bochard, Herse and lower chair (Plan Roujon). It was typical dust-on-crust conditions with noticeably less dust and more crust at lower elevations. Funnily enough we actually had a lot of fun skiing it which shows how desperate things have been lately.....

How's it looking in Cham right now, I hear there's been some fresh snow falling. Hoping to head out this weekend if the conditions have improved???

nickr, Improved, but that's not saying much, it's still skiing though, will certainly let you know the limits of your equipment.

Blimey, is it still that bad??? I heard you got about 30cm in the past couple days....
|
|
|
|
|
|
nickr, It was more like 15cm everywhere except the higher elevations (top of Grands Montets). So, it was nice powder but with a very definite base of ice and in lots of places rock underneath. We skied the Vallorcine side of Le Tour today and the snow was also very windslabby in a lot of areas. So, things are better than they were but not what you would call stellar yet.....

In case anyone's interested, I made a collection of all the Chamonix conditions sites I could think of (including this thread!) and put them into one blog post, complete with RSS feeds so most of them update automatically, might be handy?

anyone know what's going on with the police presence around today?

Apparently 3 men broke into a chalet, surprising a resident, who raised the alarm with the gendarmerie. Car chase - with helicopter air cover - ensued, ending at Flégère cable station. Shots were fired. Two got away but one (a Birmingham man) was arrested.

I'm a little disappointed there wasn't a high-speed chase, on skis, through the mountains... James Bond style

Zero-G, I'd probably consider living in Birmingham if it was within 2 and a half hours drive of large snowy mountains

Zero-G, thanks for the info. Activity was pretty intense, road closed between Le Praz and Tines, heli overhead most of the afternoon.

I'm heading to Chamonix March 8-13. Have the conditions improved much recently, and/or do you expect them to be better by the time I make it over?
Thanks!

has any body been out touring on/across the glaciers recently? how are they looking re crevasses being bridged? I am contemplating a few days touring in a couple of weeks time around Mt Blanc - but am concerned whether the lack of snow this season has made the glaciers too dangerous this year.

SMALLZOOKEEPER, hmm, 3 large calvas in teh Mix last night and none of that was waking me up this morning.
Anyway, off for a wee pootle around now....

it was indeed a wee pootle. Pootled up to Les Houches to stay under tree line and have some vis. My word it must have been getting desperate there last week.
Anyway: snowing properly, about 10-15cms at 1,800, expect more higher up. Will freshen things nicely for next week. Actually, today's few runs some of the nicest skiing we've done all year.

Anyone in Chamonix right now? Any chance of a quick round up of the on-going snow conditions in the main areas: Brevent/Flegere, GM etc. Heading out there March 12th so I'm hoping for 12 days of solid snow before then Is the black run from Brevent down to the town still open? What's it looking like higher up?

CharlieL,
1. conditions in 2 weeks time are a bit unknowable, it's forecast to be cold but no snow seen. I expect that the GMs will be excellent when the sun comes out but the off piste is not great at all. Bumps off Hearse are generally excellent though, if you like bumps.
2. no run from Brevent is completely unskiable. It's unlikely that anything between now and then will open it.

Zoinks! Is Brevent still open??? Or just the black down that's closed? (presumably same from Flegere)? What's the new snow like - hasn't there been a few dumps over the last couple of days? Forecast for next week looking good for fresh stuff ... so far.

CharlieL, not much more snow in this one http://chamonix-meteo.com/bul/metPreEveEn.php
An afterthought: there's a note at the bottom of the forecast saying "As a reminder, today in Chamonix, the sun rises at 7:16 and goes down at 18:14". What "horizon" is being used for that timing? Is 1814 the time you'd see the sunset if there weren't any mountains around the place?

CharlieL, I'm not back in Cham for a couple more days, but I think it pretty unlikely that any skiing will be possible from Brevent or Flegere to the bottom at any time in the near future . . .

Had a bit of a moment on the scraped-off piste at the top of the GM, prereleasing is never fun, but apart from that no worries. Have to get used to a less beefy boot however.
