Right, I've got the pole guards. How do I put them on my poles? Says they fit all traditional poles and mine are. Looks simple enough...but the plastic of the guards is pretty tough. Any tips?

spyderjon, You're absolutely right about the cross-blocking introducing rotation. You should only do it when close enough to the poles to need to, and many kids try to do it even when they're miles from the pole - hey presto! ROTATION
ski, I heard that lots of ex WC racers do the Masters series and therefore not worth doing unless you're at that level - even at 60+. Is this true??
Glad to hear you're all having such fun - but why don't you talk to each other???? If that was France you'd all know each other's life story by now!!!!

Wanted to...But walking up to a total stranger and saying "hey, do I know you from the internet?" seemed a little intimidating. Cos if they said "no?!!"...

Push the thinnest part of the pole through the clamp - you might have to use quite a bit of pressure to open the clamp. Slide the guard up to the top of the shaft under the grip & then tighten the screws on the clamp so that the clamp compresses & grips the pole shaft. The guards may come with small pieces of thin rubber that you slide between the shaft & the inside of the clamp to help achieve a better fixing.
If you can't obtain a secure fixing with the screws fully tightened then you can add further slivers of rubber or build up the contact area on the pole shaft with electricians tape.
Once tightened the clamp screws may protrude a bit causing a potential sharp hazard. If so cut the excess thread off with a hacksaw & file smooth.
Are your guards open topped or do they fully enclose the hand? If they fully enclose the hand then they will probably come with an additional screw that attaches the top of the wrap around portion of the guard to the top of the grip.
If you have Leki 'trigger grip' poles then you have to buy Leki's guards specifically for the trigger grip pole as the
guards come with a replacement aluminium centre top piece for the grips that have a threaded hole to accept the screw that secures the top of the wrap around portion of the guard to the grip. Simply push out the securing pin, replace the original plastic top centre piece with the aluminium on & reinstall the pin.
Easy

spyderjon,
Thanks! Got the first one on. It does fully enclose the hand and comes with a hole in the top of the guard and extra screw. No holes in the top of my poles though. Can I drill a whole for the screw? They are pretty basic Scott poles with rubber handles.

beanie1, Yes you can carefully drill a pilot hole that's slighty smaller than the diameter of the screw. However if the guards seem secure enough without the screw installed then I'd try them out on the gates & then only drill/screw fix if necessary.

It may be true in FFS Masters races and on the Austrian national circuit, but not at FIS IMC level.
David Pretot has done some GS and SG races just after he retired but he was a long way ahead of anyone else.

beanie1, you sound sorted now. If you managed to beat the £6.50 i can get them for then well done! I will bring the arm guards up next Monday for you.
spyderjon The only way you can avoid rotation is to hit the gate with the nearest hand to the pole. For people startin out this is the "inside hand" and usually whacks on the lower arm, and hence arm guards. Later on, with the amount of angle/lean the outside hand becomes the inside hand.
Slalom (in this sense) is very good for learning indepentantly moving the arms from rotating the shoulders. As we talked about on Monday, this will actually help your skiing, getting a bit of movement in it (so long as it is not rotation into the turn -- thats bad)
See you on Monday

ski, Sadly, it was an academic question as I can no longer ski poles due to my back, (I was bad for about 2 months after just opening the bash punter's race). However being a competitive type I wouldn't race if I thought I had no chance at all! (on my way down now, of course).
That's not to say that racing for fun, and for improving technique isn't a good thing to do though.

ski, I do agree. Probably when I was racing plastic there were less good adults around. I gave up when I stopped beating both my seeding and more than a couple of my trainees! There was no challenge in the Senior ladies to speak of - boring!!! I was always trying to beat Tomasz Ondrusz (who was one of my trainees), but never managed it - I don't think he races himself anymore.
back = bad fall from horse 33 years ago with major trauma but no break to the pelvis; several herniated discs from then on and then completely prolapsed disc 15 years ago - very unpleasant. It was sort of OK (herniated disc 1-3 times a year) until a large snowboarder used me as a stopping post 2 seasons ago, and since then I've had too many kiddie beginners - they're out of the picture for next winter though! Ski-ing helps though!

I don't think that Tomasz has retired, he has just been babysitting while his wife has been doing some races.
He was still very quick when we were training together in PSV last Easter.
There still aren't very many ladies doing Masters races or national snow ones.

Hehe, you better change the skis to Metron B5's this coming Monday.
spyderjon - Hello mate, your really going to have to stop this flattering my skiing ability as i'm finding it very hard to live up to this picture your painting of me

beanie1, I think I saw you last week looking rather smooth through the poles when blocking with your poles held horizontally. Don't know how I missed this thread or I would have said hi. Will keep an eye out for you on Monday and will endeavour to save you the embarresment of asking people if they're RockyRobin off the net My names Chris if it makes it easier?
marcgledhill, I think I remember you from the snowheads mini meet a few months ago. I'm hopeless with names and faces so if you recognise me and I have trouble reognising you give us a shout.
paulhothersall, Thanks for the tips you gave me on the pole planting and trying to keep my shoulders horizontal last Monday Best bits of advice i've had for a long while, cheers.
I would really like to join the Lions - Will I be ok to join this Monday?

beanie1, I'll be there Monday evening. If I don't recognise you, keep an eye out for my illuminous green boots. I'm not the keenest to hang around at the top of the slope for long as I feel its wasted sliding time, so feel free to prod me with a pole or something if I seem too engaged in my sliding

I'll be wearing those skis rockyrobin, pasted in above
Those and a black berghaus fleece 'n black peak performance trews. I think I can remember what rockyrobin, and spyderjon, look like too.
beanie1, wasn't sure what to do, so just did a few runs. First to remember how to ski, then to find out how those VR27's differed from B2's. A group started up on some moguls that had been built, it looked interesting and was going to ask to join in when they started putting some gates up as well. While they were setting up one of the instructors asked if I'd like to try it, but told me I needed a helmet. I went to borrow an Xscape one, they have a distictive moisture and smell to them that lets you know that you MUST buy your own .
The instructor gave me a few basic tips when she found I hadn't been through gates before, like don't hit them, and away I went. Utter rubbish at first, but escalating to simply rubbish after a few runs. Repeat 'till end of session.
Interestingly, on the last run of the session I just had a razz down the slope, rather than the gates course, and was pleasantly suprised how just doing the gates had helped my "normal" skiing. No real lessons or drills, but just doing the gates a few times helped.
Note to self - buy helmet, or can't join in bump or gate classes.

marc gledhill, After skiing slalom skis those B2's are going to feel very dull to ski on. I think I will have to be dragged kicking and screeming before I use my B2's this winter. I'm in two minds whether to sell them or not. I guess the B5's will be the clincher.

All
Tomorrow night is squad night, whcih means....
1 A course up ASAP from the start of the session.
2. Timing setup, so you can see how you compare, or waht different technique does to your time.
3. More kiddies on the slopes....BUT
4. Usually a dedicated lift, meaning no lift queues on the slope.
See you there, providing I can get away from work quickly...
Paul
