It’s opening day in the Dolomites tomorrow!
At Kronplatz they are planning to open 20 runs served by 14 Gondolas and 4 chairs.
Conditions at the top look to be excellent.
https://www.bergfex.com/kronplatz/webcams/c15328/
The forecast is for cold air to arrive tonight and the temperature to be down to -12c at the summit with a strong breeze and possibly light flurries of snow as the Nordstau tries to creep over the Alpine ridge. The Dolomites are sheltered by the Austrian alps so it probably won’t amount to much. The colder air should enable more effective snow making on the lower slopes.
Anyone out there for opening day?

I've a flight to Innsbruck on the 14th of December. Primary option for me is always Val Gardena, though Austria is looking excellent at the moment. I am now in the deeply manic twice daily checking of forecasts and webcams.
Looks like a decent start but could certainly do with some of that massive Stau dump that's forecast. Seems like 10cm or so forecast for Thursday, hopefully appears as something more beefy.
I don't ask for much, only that there is a large amount of snow arrive before I do and then 9 days of blue skies, -4° to 0° and quite piste.

It’s the first day of the new season
Kronplatz is reporting 50 kms of slopes and 18 lifts open which is about a third of their area. Last year they opened with 23kms of runs, so this year there is twice as much skiing available. Also 14 of the lifts today are gondolas which will probably be welcome in the 20mph winds at minus 12c !
Obereggen has 12 lifts and 21 kms of runs open today.
https://www.dolomitisuperski.com/en/Open-lifts
The Dolomite ski areas have been able to make snow on their upper slopes and were sheltered from the rain in the west so their skiing surfaces should be dry and in good condition.
there looks to be plenty of people out skiing.
https://www.bergfex.com/kronplatz/webcams/c14486/
The next milestone is the 5th December with the opening of the Sella Ronda and the remaining Superski areas. The Sella Ronda circuit is entirely above 1500m and already looks to have skiable snowcover. Further snow making over the next 10 days should hopefully enable it to open on time, wind permitting.
Temperatures look to be staying mostly cool into December with even the possibility of some more ‘cosmetic’ snowfall!

Looks like the Northern Alps are getting plastered this weekend, with just a dusting for the South, but there is a hint of something more substantial on Thursday in the WePowder forecast.

Can you wait until Thursday firms up before pulling the trigger?

It does all depend on the track of the low, but it looks like it's picking up something from the Gulf of Genoa to throw at the Dolomites, 30+cm down to valley level would be very welcome!!

The forecast is still looking good for 30cm or so of snow coming towards the end of the week but there seems to be a bit of a question mark over how much of it will be rain at resort level. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays cold!

You know it makes sense.

Corvara is now reporting a piste depth of 84cm at 2,200m and 44cms at 1500m.
https://snowreport.skicarosello.it/skicarosello/?lang=en
Thats potentially very good news for anyone going out this year because it means that the upper slopes are at or very close to the target depth above which the base will last the whole season.
I think the target depth for the lower slopes is around 60cms ?
Good news by the end of November

Looking at the forecast, much of the precipitation is due in the last quarter of the day so hopefully it falls as snow.

December's coming in with a bang!
The numbers seem to be dialling up...64cm currently predicted for Fri-Sat at altitude for Val Gardena 2518m...and deep cold on Sunday as the flow swings northerly...
https://www.bergfex.com/groeden-wolkenstein/wetter/berg/
Rain-snow limits are a bit of a concern for resort level, but with the usual precipitation cooling, snow can fall even when air temps are slightly above 0C, I'm sure we will see a lot of whiteness on the cams come Sunday morning...

Definitely raining in the villages today. On the lower (& possibly mid) levels too.
But don’t worry about it. There was plenty of snow in place, and more to come.
We are in Selva from 18/12, and I am confident that the skiing will be good.

They were probably due some bad luck having avoided all the poor weather last year and the rain in November.
Still, the Sella Ronda is due to open on Tuesday. I’m sure it will

I appreciate that the lifts involved have yet to open for the season but... is there any update/news/local gossip on last seasons Saslong -> Ciampinoi diversion debacle?

I'll be in Selva by Fri coming. I'll update if there's no news sooner. I'm curious as to what the 'heavies on the fence' situation looks like this year.

I don’t think the “fence” will be erected before or during the World Cup, surely is not a good look, after …. For what I read the guy will not be happy until he can build his mega hotel , so I bank on doing the extra run

Forecast looks good Mollerski.
Can I kindly request that you update us all on the piste conditions you encounter please? I'm looking to sneak out before Christmas.

Thanks Mollers, I hope you enjoy.
It is an extremely stressful time; the constant checking of forecasts and webcam, the fear that it will all melt just before arrival, the fear the viz will be shash......
I think I've done some of my best skiing in Val Gardena in December. Plenty snow, blue skies, empty piste.
