Is the straw serving a purpose? I guess there is snow at the next corner and above, and it's just that patch that is bare?

@kitenski, not sure as haven’t been down there since Saturday when it was skiable (just) - it was brown round the next corner as well - pretty much to where it flattens out into a road.

Back in February 1999, there was no snow anywhere, so they covered the blue run on Nyon with hay and did beginners lessons on it. I think it's just a way of covering any stones and by adding water and freezing it you can ski over it.

It's Granges, right? Last weekend the pisteurs told me they would close it, maybe they decided otherwise (and added the straw). We skied on straw in Avoriaz before - but it was December, not February!

Wasn’t that the month of the endless blizzards and La Tour avalanche following 7’ of fresh snow?

We come out to les gets on 16th and were worried last year when out at same time but the skiing was really good. Looks a lot worse this year but hopefully it holds up enough and there is some sort of top up

Yes, Granges. It was closed on Monday (last time I was there) - but my mate said it was open yesterday (and showing as open on the app today).

@mikeelsa, it’s grim low down but higher up (esp Avoriaz and PlJ) it’s absolutely fine. My next trip’s 15/3 and it looks like at least a reasonable top up early next week then the fingers need to be crossed for some lower temps (and maybe another 50cm of snow, if that’s not too much to ask).

Certainly some snow falling - at village level here (1300m) it's not really sticking, temps currently just above zero, but looking up the mountain I'm pretty sure it will be true to forecast higher up.
Talking of forecasts, I seem to have lost access to the 9-day forecasts I used to get - anyone got anything beyond the 6 days I can see? Got a mate coming out Friday next week, hoping for enough snow to try my new fat skis (Atomic Bent Chetler 120) that arrived this morning

@Chaletbeauroc, this is the maligned Wepowder 14 day forecast for Champery. Obviously the stuff at the end of next week is pie in the sky, but as I’m next out on 15/3 I’m having it as gospel! Meteoski also goes a bit further out than a week I think.

@andy from embsay, Thanks. Can't actually read the numbers from that screenshot - how much are they forecasting for Sunday 3rd?

@Chaletbeauroc, 31cm at 1500m at Champoussin, 38cm at Pointe de l’Au.

Ta. I realise now that I can actually see that on their site, just not the next week ( but that gives me the scale, so the next blip a week later must be around 20cm?)
Sounds optimistic, recent falls have been much more in line with snow-forecast.com predictions, which is showing 7cm for Sunday, another ten or so on Tuesday, but I live in hope.

Weds 13th they have 11cm up top - the 38cm on 3/3 is the total for the day.
Keeping everything crossed but I’m sure you’re right about the optimism!

@Snow&skifan, so “BikePark” is the top of Zore and the runs back to Super Morzine from there will be pretty/very ropey at the bottom - but it certainly looks like quite a few folks are off down to Proclou. And “Ravarettes” is in the Nyon area which, if it’s anything like last weekend, will be fairly quiet early on as the Granges run (pic above), which is the main way to get there from Pleney, is snowless. Plus Nyon area is never that busy anyway.

Arrived in resort this morning, went up Nyon to access the skiing. Blue link down to the Troncs/Charniaz lift area was pretty horrible by lunchtime, but most of the rest of the skiing was ok, where it was open and there was actually snow.
However, getting back to Nyon from Pleney via Granges at the end of the day is not something I want to repeat. Yes it's open, but there's a sign at the top warning you that there's a 200m section where you have to take your skis off and walk down hay that's been put on the side of the piste to stop the mud being too slippy. I've never had to bash hay off my ski boot soles before putting them I the bindings before!

Anyone know if there are rentable ski lockers in Morzine at the base of the TC Super Morzine lift?
|

It's actually amazing how much is available considering the lack of new snow. People only need the lower part at end of day anyway.
I wish the actual state of the piste was added to the online apps - with the amount of forced walk. I don't mind a bit of walking (typically for the last downhill of the season for a given resort), but if you have this midday on your way to lunch it's not fun. Even for Myrtilles yesterday (closed but we could assess things from the lift) we didn't need to remove skis.

@Ray Zorro, not publicly available ones unless you are renting from Hubert Sports or Intersport. Hubert may rent you one if they’re quiet but I wouldn’t bank on it. Intersport just have racks, not lockers, which can mean people take the wrong clobber (my mate rented skis and left his own boots there, which had a nice day out with someone else).

@patrick!, I seem to recall they kept Tetras closed til about 1500 last year and just opened it up as a way back to the gondola.

@patrick!, That’s if you rent from them (and they’re not lockers, they’re just unlocked racks - I wouldn’t put my own stuff in there - as i say my mate’s boots went walkabout about a month ago). Hubert have nice lockable lockers but they don’t normally offer a rental service if you’re not renting from them - they let me rent one a few years ago but said no every time since.

Eeek - I hope he complained. If these shops deliver a paid service they should be up to the task.

I think I said it before - wake up early, stay high and enjoy. Maybe more snow coming, maybe not, I'm not denying the incoming doom weatherwise, but if we keep on seeing bad things we won't make the best of what's left.

What is unusual about the snow, is that where there is snow it is pretty decent, and then suddenly there just isn't any at all, rather than lots of runs that are soft/muddy/stony/generally not worth it. The only horrible bit we found today was the bottom of the run back down to Prodains at the end of the day.

Forgot to add - we watched a heli landing on the path not far from the Wedze. We were playing under Ranfoilly when it happened, I have to say it was quite impressive. I believe there was a big crash on the piste (Tulipe).

Yeah, a lot of snow falling today, as per forecast. Perhaps 10cm so far in the village here (Morgins, 1300m)

Not weather related!
Going to Club Med, Samoens next week and in view of 2 completely stuffed knees, unlikely to do much skiing!
Does anyone have info on bike hire operating this time of year?
Found Les Carroz outfit, but cant see that being viable.
Thanks
