We went down Cascades yesterday, I recommend not doing this in unless you want a free base grind or you're on rental skis. There are LOTS of rocks and bare patches. However it's never been open when we've been before so got to ski something new at least!

@jirac18, we skied until well after 2 yesterday in Carroz, Morillon and Samoens and neither of us like skiing slush. Although the bottom of a few runs were really soft and nasty (Marmottes in Carroz being the worst), it is relatively easy to avoid those and stay with slopes that are facing the right way and more lightly used. We skied down both Zorta and the top of Cupoire after lunch and both were still on the very firm side. It really is worth some time with the piste map working out which slopes face which way, and also choosing places where there is a lift before you drop too low - Gron is the best example for us. You can't do that in Samoens, but Morillon also offers choices about how far to drop before coming back up. Hope you find it better today in Flaine!

@belette, in our experience it's rarely a pleasure to ski the last bit......although such beautiful views higher up that on rentals it might be worth it!

Today was interesting….some spot on lovely piste conditions from the top of Flaine but soft spring conditions into Forum. Coming back over Grand Vans to Samoens it starting snowing and sky was very dark. Corbalanche lift wasn’t working so down Portet it was which in places was carnage. Off the Têtes des Saix into Samoens was like night skiing so dark and the rain came. Pretty wet by the time we just got to the gondola. Vey slushy moguls and lots of folks struggling to cope. Like I said it was interesting.

@jirac18, Haven't been to the GM this season but last season they only opened Corbalanche at certain times of day which made Portet busy. A pity!

@snowymum, in three days I’ve not yet seen it open which is a real pain having to all the way down portet which towards end of day is carved up and rather busy. I hope the mid level rain has spot or conditions will really deteriorate. We are back down in town and it’s just a bit drizzly but looks like it may still be raining from 1100m up

@jirac18, Corbalanche is open from 14.45 each day, which is supposed to stop the later rush down Portet. I could understand if it didn't open until, say, 13.00 but 14.45 feels too late.
On the upside, Diamant Noir in Flaine is now open all day - last season it was mornings only.

It wasn’t today we came past there at 1500 and it was still closed. We used Diamant Noir today but oddly there were notices on some boards saying it was closed but it definitely was up and running.
There was a really heavy downpour this evening in the valley just after my post above for about an hour or so. It’s just so warm here currently I hope the weather turns and a cold spell can return for those coming out for the rest of the season. I can’t see us skiing much more than couple hours tomorrow based on today and the week so far.

Yesterday morning was lovely here. The pisteurs had done an amazing job overnight. As with all week it got very soft after lunch but pistes were super quiet and we went pretty hard at it all day. Getting back down to Samoens 1600 wasn’t too bad at all.
Today we had great half day but called it quits around 1400 as legs were gone a bit. There was a really nice fresh snowfall overnight and we headed to Flaine above the cloud line. Pistes were largely all like skiing off piste in fresh powder as snow clearly arrived after the bashers had been out. A hell of a lot of moguls everywhere but as it was powder not slush it was great.
Still plenty of snow for anyone heading out next week with more forecast locally on Friday and Saturday.

Hi All
Apologies if this is the incorrect thread to post this question but here goes. For the last couple of seasons I have stayed at Club Med Grand Massif at Samoens 1600 in mid January. We have lucked out both times and had good snow. I am considering a trip next year but in mid March - are the resorts on the Samoens side of the Grand Massif still likely to have coverage down to the their base lifts ie Les Carroz and Morrillion?
Many thanks

 You know it makes sense.

@Griggs, if your question was 'will Les Carroz and Morillon still be skiable' then the answer is yes. Exactly which runs will be open is harder to predict. As I type, it's chucking down with snow and the runs down to Morillon 1100 and Carroz are all open and have been all the time this year. In other years, some of the lower runs have been closed in mid March - Marvel in Morillon, Combe Bas/Timalets in Les Carroz as examples. Flaine will certainly still have plenty of snow mid-March and is easily reached from Samoens 1600 (up Chariande Express, down Silice, Malice, Dolomie, up Vernant then down Tourmaline into Flaine).
As a bit of an update for anyone on their way out over the next few days, it has now been snowing for about 18 hours with around 6" of snow settled in Les Carroz village - assume there is more up the mountain but visibility isn't great, so having a down day. I'm not the only one, as I can see Timalets out of my window and there isn't a soul on it. Should be a great skiing day tomorrow!

This is very useful - thank you. In terms of timing we are thinking of the 14th March 2027 but could do the week before which I think is the first week after the French holidays end. Is this week quiet or does everyone who wants to ski outside the main French holidays pile in this week leaving the 14th March as the better option?

It's usually fine once the French holidays end, we generally turn up on the Saturday that they all go home. It's probably a bit quieter the week after, but there really hasn't been a busy week since holidays finished. Lots of people think the place to be is Flaine and there is a mad commute over in the mornings, but when the snow is as good as it has been this year we tend to avoid Flaine and regularly have whole pistes to ourselves in the rest of the domaine. Obviously, the later you come, the more likely it is to be soft in the afternoon, but it depends on the actual weather that year.

Thank you for the insight - sounds as though the week immediately after the French holidays end could be an option as well.

Yesterday was indeed knee deep on piste - when you could see. Visibility was zero above 1800m. Gron bowl over at LC was the sweet spot. Trees for visibility, and not so low that the snow was heavy.
Today was the day though.... Doesn't get much better. Bluebird, no lift queues, fill ya boots all morning with fresh tracks.
Commiserations for all those still trying to get here but stuck at Eurotunnel, but it will be worth it when you finally make it.

@Snowysarah, one thing is for certain, there'll be no shortage of snow! There was another 15cm or so yesterday and conditions today were amazing - blue skies, sunshine, cold. No bumped up slush anywhere, even late in the day. Runs that are usually closed by this time of year, such as Bergin and Marvel in Morillon, were beautiful today. We haven't even bothered to go to Flaine, which we usually do at this time of year, as there is plenty to ski elsewhere, with the bonus of deserted pistes. Sounds like you'll be arriving as we leave, and we are only going as we have unavoidable commitments next week.

If anyone is interested in buying a 26/27 season pass, there is a flash sale next Wednesday (8 April) selling the annual passes at 25/26 prices (check out the GM website). The annual pass is particularly good for anyone under 25 as they do a ‘young person’ rate that is not available for day/week passes. It breaks even at around 6 days, which I think is great value.

We went to Flaine yesterday - it was the last day but apart from ski clubs (the reason we were there) there was no party?! Totally empty pistes, mushy as April can be, but so much snow left...
What an odd season weatherwise.
