Thanks for the replies to my post of 14th January about touring/interesting routes
Eventually made it over there today and well worth both the drive and uphill effort
Went up the Tete du Colonney and descended the north east face
Hero snow with fresh tracks still to be made over much of it
Worth continuing down below the approach traverse for more turns and skinning the 120 meter climb out

Just wondering if anyone here is in Flaine / GM this week and can post a quick update on weather and snow conditions? Am seeing snow forecast but also some rain lower down…Thanks.

@K8TE, I was there last week and it was in good shape down to resort level in Flaine and lower towards Les Carroz. I didn't go to Morillon or Samoens. The Flaine bowl should be fine for several weeks. Obviously it can rain lower down but I expect there to be plenty of decent skiing for a while yet.

A workmate just messaged me from Samoens - resort closed due to avalanche risk, dumping down.... "Biblical" levels of snow he said. Word on the street is that lifts tomorrow will be open but that's anyone's guess.

Had a pretty dull day without any decent skiing being available
Will partial refunds still be available when they’ve kept open the basics like magic carpets? I took the 3.70 euro an day insurance which reads like it covers it but GM customer service don’t think so!
Hopefully everything back to normal tomorrow.

This is the first year in 25 years other than Covid year not to ski in the alps and they get the best snow in possibly all that time. Usually ski either last week in February or first week in March. Going to Colorado this year last week in February only 2nd time to ski in USA. Last time just 1 day in Heavenly Lake Tahoe. And Murphy’s law as we say in Ireland Colorado has had the worst snowfall in years. You couldn’t write it.

It was absolutely brilliant, loads of fresh snow and perfect conditions!
I have to say as a first time visitor I really, really liked Flaine and the Rockypop we stayed at was excellent. If anyone else is considering booking use the code 'thanks' for 15% off.

@damanpunk, I've been to Flaine many times, including last week, and I do think it's underrated. It only has the single link into the rest of the GM and if you're an off-piste powder junkie it's not for you. It'll never be the 3V or Vdi/Tignes or Paradiski but, especially if you drive, it's quicker to get to or is a short transfer from GVA. Shortish drive from the A40 too. I can't compare it to the adjacent PdS as I haven't been there.

@damanpunk, yes I am here now and agree snow was just fab today. I hear lots of snow and white out conditions on the way though and there has been a fresh covering of snow this evening in resort.

Links closed all day today. Zero lifts currently open but I suspect Pisteurs are battling to get some open for ski schools. So much snow!

We knew today would likely be closed due to high winds so did first lift up to 4.30pm yesterday to make the most of the powder. Muscles are grateful for a rest day today even though it’s so early in the week! Movie marathon day for us!

Bucketing down this morning across from the Grand Massif in the Aravis massif. About 15 cm it looks like at 1300 meters...if the temperatures stay low half term should be cracking across the Haute-Savoie.

This is so incredibly sad.
Last week when we skied in Flaine it was evident just how hard the local teams worked to check the pistes, make controlled explosions and evaluate the security situation to open up as much of the resort as possible while ensuring safety. It can’t be an easy job to make those decisions, especially during a busy half term after record snowfall.
People like Pierre and his team are the (often unseen and unsung) heroes that do vital work round the clock for skiers.
What an awful shock for those that worked with and knew him in Flaine. A dreadful loss for the team and the local community.

I’m out to GM next weekend based in Samoens, how are the slopes looking with current conditions, pretty good I’d guess?

@alti - dude, thanks for letting us know. I've been to Flaine many times when he would have been working there keeping us safe, including three weeks ago. He may even have been involved when my son was rescued by helicopter in 2002 (he's fine). What a tragedy, a truly awful event.

Hi I'm looking for a bit of advice from those that know the Grand Massif. I'm staying in Taninges about 10 minutes drive from Morillon. I'm only in the area for two days and have never skied the GM before. I would really like to ski Flaine one of the days. I have a car but I wondered would you recommend skiing from Morillon or driving direct. For context I'm a fairly strong skier. Thanks so much for the advice.

@Fin1983, definitely faster to ski than drive!
Up from the valley in the Morillon Telecabine (opens at 08.50)
Then up Sairon chairlift
Ski down Les Chars
Up Coulouvrier (longest chairlift in Europe, apparently, but fast) to the Tete de Saix.
From there you ski down Malice, Silice, Dolomie (it's signed for Flaine and is a bit like one continuous piste)
Up Vernant chairlift
Ski down Tourmaline and you will arrive in Flaine Foret
All those runs are blue, but both Les Chars and Tourmaline can be a challenge for newbies in the wrong conditions, if you have anyone tagging along with you.

Is it possible to ski from the bottom of the Paccoty chairlift if coming down from Samoens onto the bottom section of Chars and across through the trees to the bottom of Sairon lift or do you have to go up Coulouvrier and come back across to Morillon.

@jirac18, I don't have the piste map in front of me but from memory you have to take Coulouvrier to get back to Morillon - there is no route between Samoens and Morillon at low level.

Hi all in GM, what’s the temperature like from 1600 to Flaine at the moment?
I see Cascade and Marvel is open but clothing wise ?? Is it really warm or windy.
I’ve been in GM six times but always January and heading out 14th March
Thank you

I was intrigued, since I used to be a Flaine regular but didn't recognise several of those names. I guess a lot of new stuff has happened since I was last there, probably 20 years ago now.
Anyway, I often get sucked into a rabbit hole when I'm trying to avoid doing any work, and this was no exception, and my curiosity was piqued.
I first went via the French IGN map, and although they're not up-to-date enough to show the new lifts they did seem to show a big valley between the area I imagined coming down the black from Chars and the area I do know on the main runs down under Sairon to Morillon.
Then I went to google maps to see exactly where the Coulouvrier lift starts.
Hmmm. combining the two sources, It seems that there is a actually a road/track that runs mostly downhill from that lift at 1182m, climbing just a tiny bit then dropping down to 1151m, 1144m at les Rasses, 1129m at la Plaigne, 1086 just above Montebard and thence les Esserts/Morillon lifts.
Now I'm not suggesting it would be skiable, but if I were there and had some time on my hands I might just check it out. It's about 2km and google shows a steady, albeit very slight, downhill. Probably not enough gradient to ski, so would be more of a walk-out, but I'd certainly do it on a bike https://maps.app.goo.gl/7eETQCLEY3jHNLfo9

@jirac18, I love maps. Do let us know what you find, although it also occurs to me that by this time of the year it's unlikely that there would be enough snow left at that altitude to ski out anyway, especially given the warm weather of the last couple of weeks.

In Samoëns at the moment, it’s warm very warm, everything that we wanted to ski is open, we were lucky to do Les cascades but think it closes today. Noticed a couple of black runs closed. Skiing has been brilliant just softer as the day go on!
