OK, so I'm off for visit number 2 to St Anton in just over a week, hoping to pick up where I left off last year and explore more of the frankly mind-boggling amount of terrain on offer.
A major shock for me last time was the lunch prices (I'd foolishly swallowed the 'Austria is cheaper than France' line). My tightwad teenage son was so disturbed by the cost of lunch that he started stealing meat and bread from the breakfast buffet for us to eat on the lifts!
Whilst that is an option, I'm hoping that some of the Arlberg devotees on here can name a few places where I can get a reasonably priced lunch. And if they happen to do a good Kaiserschmarrn then so much the better!

@greengriff, what sort of food are you after? If a sit down lunch in Lech or Zürs then a second mortgage is probably a requirement. The self service spots in St Anton are generally reasonable though the food quality is pretty variable.

@greengriff, Austria is cheaper than France, with the notable exception of.....St Anton! There used to be a cracking little Burger Hut near Das Basecamp where we would feed three hungry teenagers. No idea if it is still there.

@munich_irish, Well I'd love to find somewhere that served amazing Groestl or Spatzle, but honestly, anything filling, not complete junk, and reasonably-priced would more than do me! Ironically I found a hotel for the week in Lech that was half board at the same rate as the one I was going to book in St Anton. By the time I'd buggered about trying to decide, it had gone. Probably for the best if having to buy lunch there would bankrupt me!

@greengriff, Both of the self service spots at Galzig and Gampen are OK and not overly expensive. I think Gampen is marginally better but not much to choose. Fine if you want pasta / schnitzel or sausage and chips / gröstl etc plus Kaiserschmarn, reasonable salad bar too. Small spot at the top of Kapall. St Christoph has a reputation for being expensive as do the various apres spots. The place next to the lift up from Stuben might be the best of the self service spots, not been in to the one at Rendl so cant comment on that one. Seem to remember the Bifang Alm (hut near the bottom of the Rendl home run) does a decent Gröstl.

I've been in the one at Rendl, though it was a little while ago. They made me a fresh stir-fry, which was a welcome break from Tirolean stodge Don't think it was too expensive. The standard huts on the mountain which are not self-service are fine too (Ulmerhütte?). Pretty basic menus though usually.

@greengriff, If you are looking for Kaiserschmarrn, you need to find someone who is cooking it fresh to order, which is unlikely to be the case in any of the self-service huts (they normally have a big vat of it, but it's not the same as a fresh one). If they bring it out in the pan and cut it up in front of you, you know it's good. Unfortunately, I don't know who does this in the Arlberg, but it will either be somewhere fancy or somewhere very traditional.

I recommend one of the soups, strudels and especially the Germknodel at the Albonagratstube restaurant near the top of Albonagratbahn. It isn’t on the piste map (maybe it’s independent?) but is an easy traverse from the top of the lift and back. Has a terrace if the sun is out. Very traditional. Not sure the forays into pasta are as good.
Actually checking my photos, my son seems to be enjoying a sausage in one so can probably recommend that too.

@greengriff, No idea what the piste "numbers" are but the red run down from Rendl, there is only one. The Kaiserschmarrn in the self service spots is indeed big vats of the stuff so I assume not the best (I generally avoid it), from my experience if you want it fresh it needs to be preordered as the batter needs to be left stand for a while before cooking (like Yorkshire pudding). You might find Bifang Alm does it well as it is an old fashioned sort of spot but you would need to be patient, cant think of anywhere that could be recommended in town though sure the high end traditional hotels like the Alte Post or Schwarzer Adler would serve it.

Sorry no. It was just a pop up shed with "Imbis" style offers. I do remember that the Stir-Frys up on the Rendl were good value, as mentioned by others.

Just had Kaiserschmarrn in the Kriegeralpe in Lech. A very traditional place. Have had it there previously and it is freshly cooked and only available after 3pm. Lech isn't cheap. But, by God their Kaiserschmarrn is the best I've ever had....

@greengriff, If you are over the Lech side then The Hotel Salome, which is just above Oberlech is reasonable, in my opinion. I had lunch there a couple of times having the "ski instructor special" and a beer for around 22-25 euro. Also lunch on the terrace at Hotel Enzian in Zurs was good and about the same price.

@Sfellows, @greengriff, real fresh Kaiserschmarrn is always expensive. Think the 20 minutes wait... And Kriegeralpe (part of Burg Hotel) is definitely expensive.
Best Kaiserschmarrn at the Arlberg is at Formarin (Oberlech, piste 210), at reasonable prices, and with an un-Lech-like normal authentic Austrian atmosphere. And a view to die for.
Also good and reasonable in Oberlech: Hotel-Restaurant Salome.

I think it was €23. But IMO that's for 2 people. I certainly couldn't eat one by myself....and it was a 20 min wait, so fresh and cooked to order. Glorious location, wonderful.

@greengriff, Surpisingly ... but it was probably 30 years ago, was a rack of ribs at the Mooserwirt. It was lunch time and a really good meal in the sunshine, so not the normal view of the Mooser.
A must do is the fantastic "Hospitz" in St Christoph.
I can't remember the food too much but its always an experience .... also probably 30 years ago.
I'm sure they must have the concrete slide down to the loos still, but when I was there they still had a tiny stable with a goat, lambs and I forget what else as you went down the slide.
I don't think it was off the scale expensive then, but the world has spun quite a lot since.

Over towards Warth the big self service place at the bottom of the Saloberjet is good value and decent food. But if you’re going that far from St Anton you’ll have worked up an appetite so a decent lunch stop at the Hotel Korbersee would be good. It’s an old fashioned place that feels a bit out of the way. Lovely peaceful spot compared to the madness of St Anton.

@greengriff, I'm sure that must be the place,
The staff all wore wooden bow ties back when I went.
Of course 30 years ago, it seemed quite reasonable.
If you want to eat for a reasonable amount, the answer is to go to a Metzgerei in St Anton.
They will make you a fantastic sandwich of your choice.
Take this with you and a tin of beer and you are sorted for the day.
You can still walk into The Hospitz and check out the loo.
Swagger in as though you own the place.

Thanks for the recommendation I shall deffo be checking the Germknodel out as have fond memories of ski camps in Zell am Zee 30+years ago , though suspect my metabolism wont be able to deal with it as efficiently as it once did

watch out as the one on rendl 1 is cash only
we were there for half term but due to the weather had limited restaurant exploring options but can conclude that none are cheap on the mountain ! you are best having a hearty soup rather than main meal to keep costs down.
we ate at the Gampen self service (st anton), Ulmer Hütte (st anton), Restaurant Seekopf (zurs), Trittalpe (zurs) and Trittkopf BBQ Station (zurs). You could share a pizza at Trittalpe as they are huge but depends on your sons appetite !
I would avoid Ulmer Hütte as seemed particularly poor value. Seekopf has great views on the terrace if the weather is good.

Seconded for Bifang Alm..it's a lovely spot.
And staying on Rendl, if you're on a budget just pop into the self service up at the Rifflbahn/Rifflshart and get a "Semi-Hendl" (half BBQ chicken) some salad and a few bread rolls & butter for a lovely filling lunch between 2/3.
I recommend it.
