Do you need a Crit air though? if its just Autoroutes and ski resorts I cannot see evidence they are required.
|
In most cases yes, but if the atmospheric condidtions dictate then they can be applied to motorways. Over the Christmas period they were over a large part of France including the motorway from Rheims to Calais.
I think I'll go for the fulli telepage tag at what appears €15 (ie 1.86 euro per getting out of the car) versus the €27 of the emovis tag plus the cost of sending it back). Have I missed something?

How long to the batteries in the doofers last and how does one know if they are running flat? We've had ours for about 8 years and driven to france about 4 times per year

@Ozboy, If it's an Emovis (formerly Sanef Toll) tag, you can log into your account to check it. Doesn't give you a battery %. Simply says "expired" if it's past it's sell by date.

Yours won’t have long left. Mine has never lasted that long. First warning sign is they stop bleeping when you go through the toll. Second warning is that the gates no longer go up and you have to pay (and do the reverse of shame if you’re in an unmanned lane).

When I log into my online account, it shows me the battery status (not a %, just a green/amber/red designation) of each. That’s with Emovis. They send out an email a couple of times a year telling people to check ahead of the winter and summer holidays. It doesn’t cost anything to swap: I just send in the old one and order a new one at the same time and get a credit when the former arrives that balances-out the charge for the new one.
Re the Crit’Air certificate, this also covers you for the greater Geneva Stick’Air zone as well, which is somewhere you might be driving through en route to some of the French and Swiss resorts.

@Ozboy, this reminded me to check the battery status on my doofer, as we are going out in a couple of weeks time.
logged in to my emovis account, and the battery level is green, so all good for the moment!!

My doofer is supplied by Fulli and they don’t seem to have a battery status on their site. They so offer replacements for broken doofers and I might just request an exchange. Thanks all

EES at rotterdam getting off the hull ferry was simple and quick yesterday. From the moment we left the car deck and having showed passport getting out of the car to enter the fingerprint and photo booth attatched to the passport check took only a couple of minutes longer, and with 4 lanes open instead of the usual just one or two we where on our way quicker than has oft been the case before in less than 10 minutes ship to road .

I'm having problems getting a Fulli badge. I go all way to the pay to the paying section, enter my bank details, CA normandie, then get a big "something has gone wrong" message and this either crashes me out of their site or takes me back to the beginning. The same happens if I offer to pay by debit card or using the site in French or English. Any suggestions how I can get around this?

Back from La Tzoumaz yesterday.
Drove down from Paris on the A6 to Dijon then wiggled over the Jura (lovely road and some great views...plateau reminded me of the Great Escape scenery!) before passing into Switzerland at Vallorbe. Standard stop by Swiss who are curious about a UK car with French plates. Onto Lausanne then Martigny then La Tzoumaz. A little slow in Paris due to a crash but plain sailing after that and took about 8 hours overall including a couple of stops to stretch legs.
Returned yesterday via Ponterlier, Besancon and Dijon before picking up the A6 back to Paris. Doddle of a drive and took 7 hours door to door. Magic.

@johnE, IME if something like this doesn't work, its down to the browser blocking pop ups, an ad blocker or some issue with cookies. Alternatively the sites connection to the merchant may be down.

@Ozboy, CA Normandie is a French bank.
I don't get the option to even choose a debit card when I attempt to open a new account though, only IBAN or AMEX

I missed the bank in johnE's message. They direct debit my account but my account is a legacy account which they took over from AREA,

@Yoda, very pleased with ours, may not be the cheapest offer, but always easy to deal with when I query toll-class or need to replace tags

I've had to go with the Emovis offer after a long debate with myself whether saving getting out of the car and walking to the machine 8 times was really worth all that money.

I've had a tag from ATMB for the last four or so years. They used to have an app that would indicate the life of the tag based on a traffic light system. App seems to have gone so I guessed that after four years of use with two return trips to the Alps a year it was probably time to change it. I just sent it back to ATMB and they sent me a new one out - took about a week or so. Very easy. We find the drive down so much easier with the tag - ours beeps in the car and reduces the music sound - we have never quite worked out how it does it as the tag is just stuck to the top of the windscreen next to the rear view mirror on the passenger side. Magic we call it !

I'm intrigued by the fact that someone with a French bank account is only using a tag 8 times a year - but then I've often wondered why so many French drivers don't seem to have them

@Yoda, AIUI it’s quite a lot to do with a protest about the autoroutes being put into private hands. Why they would rather queue is beyond me.

I only needed it for a single drive down on my own. The rest of the time we have someone in the passenger seat. To get from Calais to Les Arcs there are 4 sections of Peage, 4 collects and 4 pays.

@johnE, Are you going to stay in Les Arcs forever?
Travelling on my own, I don't need to get out of the car, just undo the seatbelt and kneel on the passenger seat. French bank card works with the contactless sensor on the peage machine.

When I've travelled on my own I have not struggled greatly with getting out and walking round with a credit card! Sometimes to save waking my OH in the passenger seat. I had a tag when I did a lot of autoroute driving

I’ve always had a passenger, while tag isn’t a massive time saver, it’s less hassle. Granted 4 lots of tolls (5 if you count the one on A432) isn’t a lot of hassle, just a personal preference.

Don't forget that a tag also means automatic payment on the peage flux libre autoroutes, which hopefully means we won't get caught out for non-payment

Sometimes when I've been driving on my own in the dark, and perhaps rain, I've found a few second out in the open air can feel quite refreshing! I tend to wave an apology to the car behind.

@blahblahblah, I was just about to type that! Also Chambery 10 cents cheaper than Bourg (and 15 cents cheaper than Aime).
Interestingly, The Fulli sites on the autoroute are charging only a few cents more than supermarket sites. Meanwhile some of the others are still committing highway robbery.
