Nudged my seasons best up to 144 today…
Frustratingly I’m getting well into the 150s turning left… but not so high turning right!

@willh, Is that because of an imbalance in your skiing or is their a camber on the slope?
MadMiloSkis was having the same issue due to a camber in the slope, which meant edge angle and g force were much higher when turning into the camber and therefore SkiIQ was consistently higher turning in that direction.

Bit of both I suspect. I’m right handed/footed and so slightly stronger when outside ski is the right foot… but thinking about it, the camber of the piste we were on probably wasn’t helping.

Really struggling this year to match last year’s SkiIQ.
Best segment last year was 151, and with the new algorithm that went down to 146. But another segment that last year was scored at 146 went up to 151 - happy days!
But skied a week or so this year and only up to 134! Snow conditions haven’t been fantastic, but I’m suprised how much I’ve lost over the summer!

@Gaz_H, Ah well, I took mine on the hill for the first time today and couldn't get them to connect but it seems I needed to 'wake' them by plugging into a power source.
That did the trick, along with a firmware update so see what tomorrow brings..... A suggestion to take up Golf is my bet at the moment !

@AndAnotherThing.., yes if you deep sleep them at the end of a season the only way to wake them up if to plug into a power source.

First skiing of the season and first day ever with Carv, high of the day 125, let’s see if that changes over the next few days when we’re pottering about and then next week when we have a lesson every day. I was interested to see initial scores, first run of the season started with 90s then increased and levelled out after a few runs.
Will have a look at the coaching tomorrow.

@richb67, remember it’s just a score to see your improvement. Don’t let our friendly competition put your skiing down.

But it is a mystery to me how it identifies short turns! |
Carv can tell the difference between a skidded turn and a carved turn, ergo if you're doing short radius skidded turns, they're classed as short turns, as opposed to short radius carved turns.........

Although how it distinguishes between parallel and short turns is my own mystery!
The other day I was skiing a radius of 4.0m and it came out as parallel, seems fairly short to me, maybe it's tempo that defines it?

according to copilot…..
Carv uses the IMU sensors in the inserts to measure:
• Turn duration (short turns are typically <1 second per turn)
• Edge angle changes per second
• Rotational acceleration
• Pressure timing on the outside ski
If your turns are:
• Fast
• Tight
• Rhythmic
• With strong outside‑ski dominance
Carv classifies them as short turns and applies the relevant scoring model.

Ive seen somewhere either in the app or the blog where they define what makes a short turn, rotation rate, corridor and turn tempo is key vs parallel.
Of course I now can’t find it!!

My carving skills are 11-29, shorts 12-21, moguls 13-19, parallel all 30

First day in Avoriaz, lots of new snow, most runs are very uneven but some great mogul runs by the end of the day, I'm happy with a 146 for moguls at 60 yrs old, will still aim for better

Ironically, when I did the swiss wall this morning, there weren't any moguls, just barely tracked powder! Carv gave me 132 for powder on the swiss wall

I'm on Day 3 with the system. The first couple of days were on touring kit and I think the top was about 139. Today I swapped for piste kit and that improved to 140 (shorts) although I don't think that's a reflection of the kit, rather changing to skiing to suit the algorithm.
The algorithm is curios, but perhaps not that much different to the instructor exams I've done where the hard part is understanding exactly what style and blend the examiner want's today

Those of you improving your scores… do you think you’re getting better at skiing, or better at getting good Carv scores? (As I have seen the video of MadMilo getting his 171 clearly it recognises how good the skier is. But this is a slightly different question!)

@James the Last, 100 improves skiing. The odd point maybe not, but overall the score reflects better skiing. Well that’s what I’ve found anyway.

To a point I’m gaming the scores but it seems that better scores come from steeper terrain, higher speed and still be able to maintain speed and line. Obs you need to be able to handle that environment to get the scores. At my age there’s a (lower) limit to what I’m happy with on a public piste. Now, where is the stad…..

Last year I definitely gamed the system, especially with the 8 turns.
I’ve only spent a couple of hours on them this year, but my higher scores came from just trying to ski better, concentrating on trying to be more dynamic and increase the edge angle.
Skiing with MadMiloSkis over Xmas, he definitely spent time adjusting (not necessarily improving) his skiing to increase his score. Lots of trial and error, changing the scores of different metrics, trying to find what mix worked for best SkiIQ. He seemed to have it fairly worked out for Carving, just needed better conditions to score higher, but didn’t work out how to score well on short turns at all. We expected his short turns to be better than his Carving, so are surprised by the results.

I had my highest of 127 carving the other day but have been stuck at 126 since then, must have hit that 10 times. I’ve started having a dabble with the coaching and am a bit underwhelmed but let’s see how it goes over the next few days. I wonder if it’s more suited to higher ability skiers.
I’ve also found the iOS app a bit buggy, annoying rather than painful but little stupid stuff. Anyone else having issues? (Can’t choose or change skis, toggle audio on and off and it doesn’t come back on, tells me randomly that I have today’s highest score when I haven’t)
On a positive note the battery seems to last for several days and I like that it differentiates different turn types on the same run so I sometimes you get scores for carving and short turns from the same run.
I’m having lessons this week so obviously more focused on what my instructor is asking me to do. However I noticed that my ‘starting turns with grip’ increased by 5 points 2 days after my lesson so maybe the other factors will follow and I’ll manage to put it all together. It would be nice to hit a 130, it feels so close yet so far away!

I did query the ski\boot selection with them and apparently it's due on a forthcoming release.
On the scores, if you click 'community' under the world map it gives your global ranking out of about 36k users. Out of interest where does your score put you ?

113 for me on my first active coaching day - not sure how well I enjoyed using it. Some busy pistes in La Plagne - I’m using the blues to do the active coaching but when you reach a busy section and need to take evasive action, I end up losing whatever streak I’ve been building. Which is frustrating to say the least!

@thehighlandcowboy, aye I know what you're saying. When it gets busy, you'd have to be Ski Jesus to score well.
Put it in 'learn' mode or 'track' when it's too busy to 'train'.
It's best when it's quiet and corduroy slope.

Has anyone done any tests to see how much, or if at all, the sensors mess with finding a beacon? I asked carv and they have not done any tests. They just assume it's all good.
I wanted to take them into the powder during this last snowfall, but it was too much of an added risk for me.
