In theory, I could. I'd have to get the bus to Maishofen then train back to St Johann, but not impossible

The DJ Ötzi Session is great. Have done it twice at the Goaßtahl. Just pack a few hip flasks and Bob's yer uncle. Enough time to hit the Schwarzacher after it too

I Will be arriving on 17th of january, it seems like its mostly blue runs open and ”only” 140 km of 270 km slopes open. I see that the temperatures is falling so i guess the snowcannons are blasting? What are the chances of the whole or most of the area is open in two weeks?
This will be my first visit to Saalbach and i want to experience the most of it

@Kimpadoo, ask @tatmanstours, for his guide, there is more than blues open and by the 17th if the long range forecast is true there will be lots of snow.

@Kimpadoo, we were there over Christmas with pretty much the same number of runs open - had tons of ground to cover. Many of the blues are steeper than those in France and the reds are really fun and less busy. I expect Mid-January will be equally uncrowned.
I did do a trip report if you fancy a read of it for a first-timer’s POV

Hi - first time poster so apologies if this is the wrong sub (please point me in the right direction if its the wrong one)
So...I'm going to be staying in Saalbach, i'll be having lessons in Hinterglemm so I'm guessing i'll be getting the B1 12er KOGEL and B2 12er KOGEL lifts up to the top the Zwölferkogel peak. From there it looks like I can get to the bottom of the 31a blue run. Is there a way I can get to the Blue number 7 run?
As i'm staying in Saalbach, I do not want to get the lift back down to Hinterglemm, take the bus to Saalbach and back to my hotel i'd much prefer to snowboard down from Zwölferkogel to Schattberg Ost
Thanks!

Ski down Blue 30/38, then take lift A3/A4. You are then at the top of Blue 7.

@Snowboarder_123, Kris Dragoshinov of Penhab Ski and Snowboarding School is your man for boarding lessons - and, if he happens to be your instructor, he will, I assume, meet you in Saalbach (although Penhab are based in Hinterglemm).

Looks like Bergfex is reporting better snow depths since yesterday. Was there a decent dump overnight?
Mountain (Piste) 80 cm
Valley (Piste) 60 cm
Snow depth Location 20 cm (Where is this?)

@TopGooner, it’s the depth of the snow on the runs, with the lower temperatures more snow making. There’s snow forecast from tomorrow for a few days.
This is from this morning, the time stamp is local time

How much snow do we need for 168 and equally importantly 86 to open?

My thoughts too, not to mention fervent hopes, re piste 168.
Not bothered about 86 personally - leads to the middle of nowhere, unless staying in Eibing area.

What are the thoughts of possible opening of 168? someone said that it has not been open the last 2 seasons, are we looking at a similar season snow-vise for this year?

@TopGooner, 86 is quite important to me! It has no snow making on it so needs a significant dump it’s unlikely that the snow in the coming days will be enough.
@Keke81, Highly unlikely, it might actually be more than two seasons since it was open. However I’m always hopeful that it will open

We can but hope. The forecast keeps being revised, but my iPhone weather app currently predicts over a third of a meter of snow for Saalbach over the next few days.
I’m daring to be optimistic. Piste 168 is by far my favourite run, and the Hecherhütte is just superb. I drove up to it a few days before Christmas (the road up to it was entirely clear), and satisfied myself that the gulasch soup and jagatee were still up to scratch.

101 of 154 runs open today. That's quite a lot of closed runs. This down to the recent snow?

@Boofont, 101 is quite a lot of open runs - what other resorts have that number of open runs even when they are fully open? The runs that are closed are either small secondary tracks or places where there are 3 or 4 parallel runs and one run has not been pisted. You can see them all on the live piste map - https://www.saalbach.com/de/live-info/lifte-und-pisten
It has snowed in Saalbach for most of the day today, with more snow forecast over the weekend, so there is a good chance that the remaining runs will also open soon.

@Boofont, there's double what we had at crimbo, and there was still a. lot to go at then.
Looking at the map in the link @quinton posted, there are a only few which are closed that I'd be miffed not to be able to ski;
123a - we did the red 123 and it was huge fun but not one for tired legs, which is probably where the blue excels (it avoids the need to downlift in the gondola)
53/54 - these reds looked like they had a really nice gradient, looked fast
51 - same as above, steeper blue and fast way down the hill
16 - because it's a black and there aren't many of them
But there's an absolute ton of runs now open that open up so much more of the mountain. That red/black combo below Schattberg Express would be a run I would have loved to have done if the snow had been good.
You'll have a ball

@Specialman, good point, you didn't miss anything with 123a a lot off it is a mountain road, 124 has a long flat bit, we always take the gondola .

Being a masochist, I generally do 124, because I like the narrow, tricky bit, before you get onto the long, flat bit.

Hello all,
I was almost set to book a weeks skiing with some friends the realised it will be the busiest of school holidays weeks in France so looking at none French alternatives! I've skied a fair few Austrian resorts St Anton, Obergurgl, Sölden, Söll, Kitzbühel, to name a few but never Saalbach which I think will suit our group well of early intermediates to myself once reasonably advanced ski anywhere on or off piste before taking an almost 8 year break due to kids and rugby injury. I'll be happy just staying with the group on piste and possibly getting a guide one day if the conditions warrant it.
Anyhow our brief was a <2 hour transfer, convenience to lifts and a resort with plenty of variety on piste. We normally DIY and have used Sun Web the last couple of trips as their ski pass included is pretty attractive but they don't have many options.
We're late 30's early 40's ski all day every day a couple of post skiing beers and a good feed is about as much night life as we're looking for. Any suggestions on accommodation? HB probably preferred and any other advice welcome. Cheers.

What grade of accommodation are you looking for and location.

Similar age group and we’re staying at Hotel Kendler 2nd year next week (via Sunweb). Perfect location, but to be honest you can’t really go wrong in centre of Saalbach. Very nice hotel, superb food. Touching distance of various apres bars. Hotel has an amazing pool (indoor and outdoor) plus a hot tub on the roof.
Also stayed at Hotel Jufa (bottom of town) and I liked that too, not quite a plush as Kendler, but still good. I think it was cheaper to book direct with them than use Sunweb.
Been going to Saalbach now for 15 years, prior to that was France. I can’t imagine going anywhere else now. It’s served us well, from a lads ski holiday, to a couples holiday, and now family holiday with kids.
