Freezing levels are jumping higher Sunday/Monday and then again the 16th-17th in Bernese Oberland leading to rain lower down. How much room for improvement is there on these dates? I’m still not sure how to check the other models besides GFS (by looking at Snowforecast.com), so I know I’m not getting the full picture here.

Loving the snow that is about to hit, but selfishly, would love some blue sky days - In La Rosiere for reference. |
AI forecast for La Thuile...

Thanks for this. If that comes to pass, I'll take it!

I am far from an expert - but it looks like there is some room for improvement. All of the models show warming next week but to various degrees. IFRSHRES for example shows the warming in Switzerland concentrated in the valleys but the mountains staying well below zero. That would be a good result, IMO.

Now that the snow has arrived - does anyone have a good way to check actual snowfall across multiple resorts, say over the past 24-72 hours? I know that one can do this on say, snow-forecast.com, but I am not sure about the quality of the snowfall data. Is it real or estimated?

Find a webcam that has a clear flat surface visible that has no snow on it prior to the start of the snow. Check back during and after the snow event and approximate how much snow is there. The Vallee Blanche lift arrival station on the webcam is my go to today for Les Deux Alpes.

For Swiss resorts, this is very handy map of all measurements, but I don't know of an equivalent in the rest of the Alps

The one in Tignes Le Lac has a handy "Tignes" sign that sits on a plinth. You shouldn't see the plinth in winter but you can see how far up the lettering it gets during a storm.

Believe it or not but Snapchat is a good way to check the weather in almost real time. There's a map feature so you just scroll around the alps an click on the heatmaps. A significant amount of snow has definitely fallen from my reports

I reckon 20cms at “village” level this morning. Lots of big bangs going off.
More snow forecast.

I was in Val D'Isere many years ago. We had somewhere north of 150cm in less than 24 hours. They literally used a JCB to dig out a nursery drag on the Front de Niege. Plus about the same width again to ski back to the bottom of lift. So literally a trench. On the basis of that they said no refunds. The Tourist Office got bombarded with complaints and they eventually said you could apply for a refund for 2 days. Very little was open for 3 days+

Huge snow in Chamonix across the last three days. Not 150cm, but a serious amount of snow at all levels including the town and especially up towards the GM side.
Loads of lifts out of action, and plenty of pistes closed. Some of the piste markers only have about a foot and a half visible.
Les Houches was lovely yesterday, but the buses all absolutely packed as people chased open slopes as other areas closed one by one.
BUT, those pistes that are open are awesome. The powder this morning up on Brevent was unreal!!!
The wind is whipping across the top at altitude though. Nasty for kids. Hopefully the weather calms down a touch over the next day or so. If it does it will be absolutely epic.

Around 10-100cm fresh in the Pyrenees and Andorra, down to 500m.
All roads into Andorra, from France, were closed today.

Can any of the forecasting experts comment on the rise in temperatures that seem to be predicted for the next couple of weeks? Obviously precipitation/snow is hard to predict further than a few days out but is it the case that temperatures are easier to forecast and that a milder couple of weeks is pretty much nailed on?

Forecast for the next week looks good. Some warming Tuesday-Wed….hard to tell exactly but I think freezing level should stay below 1000-1500 so most of the new snow should stay good. Then mild cooling later in the week and more precipitation arriving Friday. Should be snow in most resorts but the models appear to be favouring the south side of the alps.

Because my small uneducated brain still does not know how to properly interpret pressure charts or where to even find the right ones, I am relegated to checking snowforecast.com to get an idea of upcoming weather. Based on what it shows, it seems the NW Alps are going to be warm with rain at lower levels right up to my trip out on the 24th.
Is anyone with a more sophisticated understanding able to provide me with some colder and snowier predictions based on other models please?

@cb97 there is a lot of consistency in the models over the next week. Generally warm-ish but not really warm (it is January, after all). I have difficulty working out exactly how high the FL will get - maybe over 2000 in some places during the day - but could be 1500m in others - dropping down below valley floors at night. The only major change in the forecast seems to be a low setting-up in the south towards the end of the week and sending precipitation northward. But no real change in temperature. So warm-ish and wet. I am not experienced enough to forecast when that breaks down. It appears to be very stable. Some long-range forecasts have it in place all the following week.

I’m also a bit of a lurker on this thread. Off to Samoens on the 25th January but staying at Samoens 1600. I can see the trend is towards a slightly milder period for this week but would be interested to hear any of the experts views on the slightly longer term outlook - I do also realise that any forecast beyond three days is a bit like sticking your finger in the air !

@cb97, if the depression sets up in the south you may find the the NW Alps ( haven’t said where you are going) may be in a foehn hole with no precipitation and warmish winds , too far out however

Equally if one is definitely going to a set resort - and is not flexible with dates or locations - looking a charts and forecasts will only either depress or excite you. But won’t change what you actually find when you get there! Especially two weeks out

Don’t worry about forecast apps beyond the approaching Sunday.
From around Thursday/Friday this week we will have a better understand of what that weeks skiing will look like.
Out through the rest of this week for the NW it’s looking like mild-ish temps but the snow should remain good to excellent.
If that continues through the week 17-24 then you may want to try and sty a little higher.
Then it’s all up for grabs 24-31st.

Thanks, makes sense. Part of the issue for me is living in the U.S. so I have to book pretty far in advance and just pick a week and hope for the best. While I have the historical snow depth data to look at and get excited about, it seems the NW Alps is on a bit of a streak right now of subpar snow years (at least since we’ve been coming).
