Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Its just not a trip without trees covered in snow. Makes all feel a bit meh & superficial. Knee deep snow in the resort centres are a bonus, but understand roads need to be kept open.

Well we are heading back home tomorrow after a week in Selva. Covered all of Val Gardena , much of Alta Badia, Sella Ronda (Orange) plus day trip to Hidden Valley and Cortina. Snow was excellent throughout - although not so good in Cortina given lower elevation and south facing slopes. The snowmaking in the area is first class and there is plenty of snow lying on north facing slopes for asthetic purposes (although agreed the brown South facing slopes aren’t pretty!). But the main takeaway was that it was mind numbingly cold - didn’t get above -6 anywhere for first six days and frequently minus 15 up top. Coldest ski trip I have had since Lake Louise 20 years ago. But if course this preserves the snow. Just hope the reservoirs hold out until the next big dump!

@richb67, @Kentishmole, thanks for the updates, sounds as if they are doing an amazing job with the little snow they have had. Rich67, truly jealous of your touring holiday , I would love to do the same, just need to reach my deserved retirement. I think latemar is a more challenging than other areas, hope you enjoy.

@Harrow lady, glad the info is of use. One of the reasons we left Latemar to last because it looks a bit more challenging, it’s also closest which will help on a Saturday. A day skiing there will mean that over the last few years we’ve skied a day in each of the 12 Dolomiti superski resorts, not in every area of each though, maybe that’s the next challenge Very Happy

Corvara reporting 90% slopes now open and snow making looks complete elsewhere. Even Kronplatz look to have finished Shocked
Piste depths are stable at 69cms on the upper slopes and 50cms on the lower slopes.
I suspect they have made enough now to last all season in most places.

@richb67, will be interested to hear what you think of Val di Fiemme / Obereggen (incl Latemar) as we're heading out in the week before the sHBB to stay in Pozza di Fassa with a car and plan to ski Latemar plus St Martino / Passo Rolle as you have just done. Plus in the week we'll do Passo San Pellegrino and Alpe Lusia as well as filling in other bits and bobs.

The result will be to have skied in pretty much all the listed areas, just never made it to Gitschberg / Jochtal at all - though it looks like one of the smaller areas.
Lucky you to have been to all 12!

Also heading home tomorrow, snow was excellent, only bit we found that had a few pebbles was the wind blasted slope at the top of Marmolada. Very impressed! A cosmetic dusting of 1cm today which melted on south facing slopes but hung around elsewhere.

Hey all, not been keeping up to date on snow conditions as much as normal - seen a few videos from friends in the french Alps showing lots of snow but looking at the last couple of pages it seems that the Dolomites isn't looking as rosy? Web cams look pretty good though.
We're not out till Feb half term so plenty of time for more top ups hopefully.

No bumps but it was hardpack snow, probably often like that due to wind scour. A few small pebbles mixed in. Nothing terrible but inferior snow to what we found elsewhere.

Had a great day in Latemar/Obbereggen area today, great snow conditions until mid afternoon when it was a bit scraped in places. Colder than yesterday. As expected it was busy and there were a few queues, the first of our trip.

@Harrow lady, we thought the the piste width meant that Latemar was easier skiing than San Martino which had a few narrow and twisty sections.

Re snowmaking, they even have this going on a piece of wasteland on the edge of Moena and are using tractors with trailers to distribute, we guess it’s for the cross country. It’s a very big pile of snow!

@SteveM, the Latemar/Obbereggen area was our favourite of the 4 we’ve skied this week. Lots of nice wide reds, we only skied one of the two open blacks and it felt like a black and was scraped around lunchtime but not yet icy.

Parking was interesting as the Olympic village has taken over a large amount of parking space. when we drove past yesterday (Friday) ca 10.30 ish there were quite a few places in the car park but today at 9:45 it was full and the attendants were parking people on the side of the road. There is an overflow car park signposted which says free bus but it didn’t seem to be in use yet. So when driving from Pozza ignore the first car park on your right and aim for the second one which is on your left immediately after the ski jumps. We’ve had a great few days in Val di Fassa and with today’s exception there has been plenty of parking right next to the main lifts so it’s been easy to get around places. Sam Martino di whatever was the only place where it wasn’t clearly signposted, basically set your sat nav to the Interski at the bottom of the Colbicron express. No charges at any of them either.

Excellent info, thanks very much! We shall probably visit Latemar/Obereggen during weekday to make best use of parking. Luckily the lift link from Predazzo does not close until the start of Feb for Olympics, so we can still get in that way for now.

This one I think is for Arabba - maybe some snow around the Sella Ronda next week, but we shall see. Trending a bit colder before we go out, but nothing too major by the looks of it.

@scotspikey, I'm off there too then, for the S22BB. We have to be careful what we wish for. We could have hard pack, and 4-8C sunny days all week (wind-less), or 30cm of snow every day and poor vis (with occasional blizzards). It's a gamble. Perfect weather & piste conditions is but one number on the roulette wheel.

The thing is though you have managed to get there and will now get good value from your 70euro a day lift ticket. There are 1,180 kms of runs open and all the lifts are likely to start and finish on time. The snow will be cooler than drier than most other parts of the Alps and you will be able to plan ahead for each day of your trip.
No good for off piste skiing though Laughing

Oh dear, doesn’t sound great! Where in the Dolomites are you? Just had a scout around the webcams and some areas look quite decent, while others look like we’re in April!

But the Dolomites still look lovely even when only half covered in snow, the actual skiing will be good, the food will still be great and beer/wine readily available if required. I’m sure you’ll come back thinking it was a good trip!
(Or am I just hoping that’s what I’ll think when I’m there in 2 weeks time?!)

It is true that there's a lot of visible grass on the lower south facing (non piste) slopes. It is also absolutely freezing, proper chilly baltic.

There's no new snow forecast and some high winds so things may become a little polished.

First day in Alta Badia today. Overall pretty good given the lack of natural snowfall. Most pistes were good until lunchtime, then the sunnier slopes suffered a little with some heavy lumps forming/scraped icy sections (saw about 8 people have a little tumble on red 22 from Boè). North facing slopes good until I called it a day about 1500. Coldish but only really felt it when on exposed lifts (Masarei!). Mostly sunny all day which was nice.

Bergfex forecast seemed to be the most accurate for today but still don't know what to trust. Others I look at (ilmeteo.it/dolomitimeteo.it/AccuWeather) all showing warmer days ahead than Bergfex (highs of 1C at village levels Vs 4-5C), hoping Bergfex is the most accurate again in that case. Should be more sun so the week is not looking as bad as first feared. Quite a bit of grass(/brown!) patches on south facing hills but plenty of snow around so still looks pretty nice most places. Good first day all in all.

I’m seeing no signs of coming precipitation for the Dolomites per ECMWF for the next 15 days. Wasn’t this usually the way, it’s an arid part of Europe in winter?

I would love it to snow, as we’ve 9 days in Colfosco from late this Friday. No worries though, it looks like it’ll be cold enough, with of course the world class snowmaking, scenery and just about everything else.
